Endocrinology

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Endocrinology is not a residency. It's a fellowship available after yo uhave completed a residency in Internal Medicine (3 years) or a pediatric version which requires completing Pediatric residency (also 3 years). A good website for this kind of info (also, how many programs there are, their length, and where) is FREIDA http://www.ama-assn.org/vapp/freida/srch/
Of the ones I checked at random, the fellowship appears to be 2 years long.

So your first goal would be to match into one of those residencies. Charting outcomes in the match (http://www.aamc.org/programs/cim/chartingoutcomes.pdf) shows that average board score for IM was 222 in 2007 and was 217 for Pediatrics in that same year. You'll probably want a program that has placed residents in fellowships before and you'll want to score well on inservice exams and likely complete some manner of research.

When I (admittedly half-heartedly) looked into endocrinology 6 or so years ago, it was not considered one of the "competitive" IM subspecialties (such as cardiology and GI). Not to say it's easy to get into, but if you match to an academic IM program and do well, it should't be a problem getting a fellowship.
