Hi,
Does anyone understand the difference between "bulk phase endocytosis" & "pinocytosis"? Is it just that pinocytosis is a form of Bulk Phase Endocytosis? Is phagocytosis a form of BP Endo. ?

pinocytosis is the intake by the cell of liquids

DrYo12 Thanks for your input; But if anyone actually understands the relationships between these terms please share.

THIS ISN'T HOMEWORK HOTLINE GODDAMNIT!! PROVE YOU'RE GOING TO BE A COMPETANT DOCTOR AND DO YOUR OWN DAMN WORK!!!

Actually, I have checked several scourses & could not resolve the differences. I thought it was reasonable to see if anyone wanted to engage in a scienitific discussion.
But nice avatar.

thanks. i was joking though. good luck...

They're the same thing. Actually, I had never heard of BP endocytosis until now, but doing some research, I'm convinced they're the same. DrYo is right. Both involve nonspecific uptake of liquids without the formation of a clathrin coated vesicle.

Nocamura & DrYo thanks for your input. Yea, I pretty much had reached the same conclusion. I still hope to find a definative statement, and will post if it seems useful.
Thanks

Hmmm... Im off on an interview right now so I cant double check my coursenotes but I seem to vaguely recall that pinocytosis is a subset of bulk phase. Cant recall exactly though (... size, mechanism ??? I just dont remember offhand). I can check when I get back to michigan on friday if that would help.

If I remeber correctly,

Endocytosis is just the cell engulfing matetrials and there are two subsets of it pinocytosis for small materials and phagocytosis for larger materials, say a bacterial cell.

Hope that helps

Bulk phase endocytosis is uptake of extracellular materials via invagination of the cell membrane and endocytosis of a vacuole. I believe that it can include receptor-mediated endocytosis, but the term "bulk phase" means that a variety of materials are taken into the cell with the vacuole. Pinocytosis is termed "cell drinking" meaning an uptake of fluids. I have never learned the mechanism, although I imagine that it involves fluid endocytosis using vacuoles. Good luck on your work.

Isn't pinocytosis when the membrane folds inwards (which is easy to do if all the cell is trying to get is liquid), and phagocytosis is when it in essance reaches out and wraps around a particle?

Phagocytosis is the process of endocytosing and digesting macromolecules and large particles (eg foreign bacteria, or other nutrients). It does involve folding of the membrane (endocytosis) as does pinocytosis. I beleive phagocytosis is more of an active process (like you said the membrane envelops the other particle) whereas pinocytosis is more nonspecific. Both are forms of endocytosis.
