What schools offer endodontic externships, especially in the southeast? Also, how much do these really help in getting in, assuming you are a likable person and make a pretty good first impression?

I did one at San Antonio Texas. This seems to be a popular one. Really worth it! Definitely a plus when applying to grad school.

If you do one, do it at a great school...don't necessarily look at location. There is no guarantee that you will get in to that particular school just because you did an externship there...the entire interview process is merciless!

Do externships at the schools you want to go to. If your personable and academically competitive it pretty much gets you an interview. Def. not a waste of time!

I did one at the university of Iowa this summer for 2 weeks. It was a wonderful experience. It was well worth the time and money to go there. These experiences probably won't get you in, but they might get you an interview at least. Iowa and UT San Antonio are the only ones that I know of. There may be one in the state of Penn as well, but I am not sure.

thanks for the reply.
What did you get to do on the externships? was a just watch thing, or did you get to do a little bit of patient care?

Unfortunately you are not allowed to perform direct patient care. My school would even cover the liability insurance, however it was more of a U of I policy. I have heard that UT San Ant. is the same way.

to endogirl and canaldaddy--

How long were your externships at UTHSCSA and UI? 1-2 weeks? Also, is it very competitive to get one of these externships or is it more of an informal thing?

Thanks

I was at UTHSCSA for one week (Spring Break) and it seemed like a pretty informal process. I sent an email to the program director stating that I was interested in doing an externship (included my CV as well) and he pretty much told me we could do it on the spot. It really was a great experience to see what it will be like to be a resident.

Good luck.

Iowa is 2 weeks. I found the application online through google. It is on their website somewhere under endo. It only asked for basic information. You did have to send them 2 letters of rec however, which shouldn't be a problem since I am sure you will need those anyway. The process seemed pretty informal.

Same here...I downloaded a short form from the UTHSCSA website, no letters required. It was a one week externship, but I'm sure you could stay for 2 weeks. No pt care, but excellent exposure to what an Endo residency is like: pt care delivered by residents, case review session, lit review, preparation for board cert. exam, etc.

Good luck!

I am not the OP, but thanks for all the responses, that is very useful information.

Sorry to hijack the thread...but I have another question. I am interested in possibly pursuing endo down the road after having had a few years experience as a GP. I am also interested in doing a GPR. Are there any GPR's you could think of that have a reputation for giving the residents a lot of endo experience?

Thanks again.🙂
