Hey,

I am graduating in April 2010 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I have taken Biology I with a lab, Physics I and II with labs, General Chemistry I with NO lab, and two writing/english courses. I have two electives that I can choose for the Spring 2010 semester, so I'm positive that I can take Organic Chemistry. Any suggestions for the other course?

Current GPA is a 3.5. I know that I will graduate with a 3.5 at minimum.

I am positive that medical school is where I want to be. I have no clinical experience, just experience working as an engineer. How much will this hurt me?

I am going to take an MCAT prep course.

I would like any advice, especially from those who have gone through this non-traditional process. Thank you.

Hey,

I was an electrical engineering major that transitioned into medicine as well.

I would just focus on just finishing the pre-reqs first before taking any electives. You mentioned that you did not take any labs yet for Gen Chem, so I would get those courses out of the way if you can. Clinical experience is a must. It will be difficult to display your interest in medicine without it. Volunteer in a hospital/hospice/nursing home, shadow a doctor, and/or do some research. Your GPA seems to be on track. Just get your clinical experience and do well on the MCAT.

Feel free to PM me if you need anything else.

I have gone throught the whole non-trad process and I come from a similar background. The key is to take your time and get it right....make sure you get A's on the rest of your coursework and prepare well for the MCAT. Throughout your MCAT prep be sure to take practice tests so that you can ensure that you are preparing correctly. I did not take a course, (I am not trying to talk you out of it, my work schedule did not allow for it) I used the ExamKrackers series exclusively. I stuck to a pretty strict schedule and took practice tests throughout the whole process and I was able to break 30.

I would try to knock out the second half of Bio and/or Gen. Chem. Also, you will definitely need some sort of clinical exposure and some volunteering. There are plenty of threads on these forums about both of these subjects.

If you have any specific questions PM me.
