I asked this in the Allopathic sub forum too but I figured to ask here as well since I'm applying to both.

I have everything needed to start applying and I just recently graduated from my undergrad. However I made the huge mistake of not fulfilling the 6 credit English requirement many medical schools want. I don't know why I didn't know about this, my adviser never told me about this and now I'm stuck in a huge dilemma. I didn't take one class from my English department as I was under the impression my bio lab writing intensive courses would have fulfilled them and I was so oblivious to it. I am so devastated and lost at this point I don't know what to do. Does a upper or bio lower bio writing intensive course count as credit? This has got to be the dumbest mistake I've ever done, my anxiety and panic is at a all time high. Whoever has input on what my options are please help me out. Thank you 🙁

My only thinking would be to somehow take summer classes whether it be at my undergraduate college or a community college. However this concerns be as I wanted to apply early so I was wondering if anyone knew if I could still send in my transcripts to AACOMAS and complete it while maybe under the English requirements just write that its in progress.

What were the course titles for your writing intensive courses?

Were you in any Humanities or Honors classes that were also writing intensive?

How is it possible to graduate with a BS/BA without taking ENG101 and 102?

Regardless, you should still apply and simply take ENG101 and ENG102 over the summer.

ACT/SAT scores can get a person out of certain English requirements. AP Language and Literature can also allow students to bypass lower level composition and communication courses. Other schools have Honors programs that cover the content of ENG 101/102/201/201 in different ways, but are not official "English" courses.

This is how I got a BS and a BA (in Humanities) without having a single "English class."

(I did, however, label my experience in Honors programs and other Literature classes as "English," since they fulfilled the same requirements.)

I really don't know how this happened but my degree requirements did not have a seperate English class I needed to take only a "writing intensive" which was filled by science labs which were science intensive. Such a dumb mistake as I had many semesters taking random pointless electives. I never had to take a writing intensive in any other subject. I talked to Aacomas and she basically said to submitt everything while filling in the classes that I will take to complete the English requirement during the summer. She warned me now that I have to tell every school I apply for that I would still be in the process of completing the classes. This is such a huge disappointment and my thinking is that this plan would fix the situation. Anyone else have input? Also with regards to taking English classes I've read that taking classes at a community college is good and bad. I would think that taking English would not be a big deal when compared to maybe a science prerequisite.

Edit: I don't even have ap/honors English credit. I literally fell for a trap and should have known better.

This is not really that big of a deal....When you apply, put that you plan to take an English class in the future, before you matriculate.

If you are that close to fulfilling pre-reqs, schools dont care as long as you get it done before you matriculate. You can get interviewed and even accepted without that class, though you will need to complete it before you matriculate.

So, apply, plan to take the class if you have to (like at a local community college...save money), and when you get interview invites, just check with the schools to see if your bio writing courses will fulfill their requirements. You might get lucky and not have to take one, but at the very worst, youll just have an english class to blow through (even online!) the summer before school starts. No biggie

It is very possible. I was in Honors English and it was only a semester. I had a similar situation because I thought my honors English counted for two semesters but I ended up having to take another course. I chose Bob Dylan (Yes, it's an actual college course. NOt only that but you can actually get a Ph.D in Dylanology. You seriously can't make this crap up).

I would take summer class. You could still apply this term. Just indicate on your app that you are fulfilling the credit at the present time. You doh't have to have all your credits yet to send in your app.

Just to clarify, two AP enlish classes that count for 3 credits of English each fulfill the requirements just as well, right? For the OP, I would just take them at your leisure over the next year, as long as you finish before next fall you're good to go.

I would check with each school. Some schools don't take AP credits that don't have upper tier classes associated with them. (The example of why many schools take AP Bio and Chem, but but not AP Physics.)

Go ahead and apply. Contact the schools you apply to, and be sure to mention to them that you will be covering the ENG requiremetn during summer.

This. 👍

Wait, I have taken 2 writing intensive classes (1 of which had the word writing in it) and as far as I am aware, writing intensive classes do count towards the english requirement?!?

As far as I am aware if they are writing intensive courses in subjects such as humanities or philosophy you should be fine, my problem was that it was only for biology for me.

Calm down. If this gets you anxiety and all crazy, maybe medicine is not for you. Not many, if any, medical schools will flip out over English classes. As long as you take them before matriculation, you'll be fine.

I am in the exact same boat as you except I was unaware of this english requirement until I just saw my final application that have been sent out to schools already. I have only 4 credits for english and it states "Deficit hours: 2.00".

What can I even do now considering that I did not list on my application that I was planning on taking any courses?

P.S For my major, we had an additional writing course requirement that was fulfilled by one of the classes I took for my major but it does not have 'writing' in its name.

Medical schools realize that you still have 2 semesters (and a summer) to finish any missing requirements. I still have a "biochemistry deficit" until my final transcript is processed, and I was interviewed and accepted before its completion.

So it won't affect whether they decide to extend an interview invite to me or not? I did not list that I was planning on taking any future courses in the next year. Also, do you know the process of using other classes that would qualify as a writing course but is not under the english department?

Thanks!

I took my University's Honors sequence, with a course title of HON. I just categorized them under English rather than "other non-science" since they fulfilled my English/writing requirement. What courses did you take that fulfilled your writing requirement? Label them as such.

Again, if you are not satisfied with an answer here, call AACOMAS.

If I had to take just 2 classes does anyone think it would be looked down upon if they were taken in different academic terms?

Hello everyone,
I took a semester and a quarter of English! i was wondering if med school will be strict about English requirement! will it be fulfilling a year of English?
I am so stressed out about this thank you for any help !!

I contacted COMP a year ago to ask if they'd accept my 300 level writing research papers course in place of one term of English and they said no. However, they did accept a communications class I took.

I have a similar issue that I have just become aware of through the AACOMAS. I only have 4 credits that count as English, and I'm deficient by 2. I graduated as a psychology major after taking a lot of writing intensive philosophy, sociology, anthropology etc. I hope this doesn't end up screwing me over.
