do we need to complete the entire year req. of english before applying?

...or can we just have one semester done and then indicate that another semester is planned.
but is this a disadvantage at all?

The English requirement for med school is pretty basic. How have you gotten this far without taking it?

as long as you complete all your requirements before starting school there it doesn't matter when you complete it.

This. For the vast majority of schools, you just need to complete prereqs before matriculation. However, I have heard of a school or two that wants prereqs to be done before applying (maybe Penn State? please correct me if I'm wrong). You may want to double-check with schools (especially top choices).

But don't worry. I think it is extremely rare to be required to complete prereqs before applying.

so it is NOT a disadvantage for me to not have completed two semesters of english? i will have done only 1.

They're not going to care if you still have a lingering english class to take, especially if you have another year of undergrad left. At least one school I know requires you to have your prereqs done by June of your matriculation year (i.e. you can't take them the summer before you start med school), so take some caution.

thank you all for responding

so i take it that its not a disadvantage to have only 1 semester done of english before applying.

now, i am wondering what types of courses fulfill the requirement. i have done some considerable searching on the forum and there seems to be a confusion....
does the course have to be in the english department or can it be in lets say Polish? or Scandinavian?

If you're asking if you can take a foreign language to replace an english requirement, then no. English courses are composition and literature, like creative writing or modern fiction.

Um... the English requirement generally has to be done in English.

hahah...i think i didnt state that clearly enough

i meant that my school offers "Reading and Composition" classes in a variety of departments including English, German, Scandinavian, etc....
will these courses count towards the english requirement?

You might be able to do it in Spanish for a few schools, but the English requirements are there because high level reading and writing proficiency in English is extremely important for a doctor. It'll help you on your MCAT, too.

This isn't a requirement that I would try to skirt.

But what if there is a Scandinavian-heavy passage on the MCAT?

I LOL'd.

If a class is in English, focuses on literature/writing in English, then it would probably be OK. For example, this fall I'm taking a class on the Icelandic Sagas that's basically an English lit class (we're reading them in translation, obviously) but it is technically offered by the Foreign Languages dep't.

Do make sure to distinguish between English vs. "writing intensive" courses.

so writing intensive courses dont count toward the requirement?

Some medschools want English (literature/reading intensive), others want writing intensive courses, and still others may consider it all equivalent. YMMV. Check with your desired schools.

would a class in "Intro to Public Speaking" in the English Writing department count as the english req?

what about "World Lit" or "Cultures in American Lit" or "Science Fiction"

thanks

would any course in the dept. of ENGLISH count towards the med school req?
i.e. the class i'm thinking of taking is in the ENG dept, but the title is like "environmental science"

ENG most likely means ENGineering. Stick with ENGLISH.

okay, what about dept. of "College Writing Program" or "Comparative Lit." ?

*Bump* because I am in a similar situation. I can't believe I have gotten this far without realizing I have only taken one legitimate English course in college. I have a lot of writing-intensive courses (Senior Thesis, Philosophy, Art History, Education, etc) but each school has different criteria it seems. If I have only taken 1 English course as an undergraduate and have not indicated I am enrolled in an English course, will medical schools screen me out? I am definitely willing to take an English course at Community College this upcoming Fall if need be but I have already graduated and am applying this cycle. So my question: can I sign up for the class now and indicate this on my primary application so I don't get screened out, wait for the schools to tell me if I need to take another english course, or what?

i'm not an expert on your situation but different schools have different requirements. a quick google search brought me this: http://web.jhu.edu/bin/s/g/english_requirements.pdf

that's from 2008 though so you should check on msar or the school's website. i just checked columbia and they require a year of english.

Thank you, this is very helpful.
Assuming the worst that a school may not count any of my non-English courses as sufficient to meet this requirement, can I still take an English class in the next year to fulfill requirements or will they not consider me since I have not already taken the class and have not indicated I am signed up for another English course?

Tried to add a course but the 2011-2012 academic year is not available to select your future courses. This makes me think even if people have not taken all the prerequisites before applying, they can still take them in the application year
