I’m a sophomore in college. I haven’t taken an English course yet and do not plan on taking one. I was wondering what medical schools would be thinking of this.

I have however taken a class that required a 20 page paper and it fulfills a writing requirement at my school. Also I fulfilled another writing requirement by getting over a 720 on the Writing part of the SAT.

Should I take a course just to be on the safe side? Or maybe do the CLEP Exam?

This is a question for your pre-med adviser, not random people who can't possibly know all the circumstances of your situation.

That said, I don't think you need english classes necessarily, but usually you need at least two (if it's a semester system) classes that fulfill the writing requirement. Maybe even three, but I'm not positive how it differs between semester/quarter systems, and med schools differ amongst themselves. I doubt your SAT score matters at all.

yes. some sort of expository writing class. i've filled out secondaries and have had multiple schools ask for 2 english/writing classes. since that one class fills a writing req., that's one, but you should get a 2nd. (and talk to an advisor like stated above)

BTW, i was a signature away from going to Brown and doing exactly what you did. In fact, my mother endorsed it cause she knew how much I hated english. Thank goodness I decided against that. It will hurt you more than help.

Ditto. Most schools I have encountered require 2 English/Writing/Literature classes. Even if you aren't required to take them at your school, those classes will only help you in the long run anyway.

I would also say to check with your premed advisor, but do some research on this question on your own. As it turns out, many of my academic advisors were wrong on the things they told me throughout school...

More than one of the schools I applied to in Texas require a year of English. I'm having to take English II this semester even though I took a Critical Thinking class that would normally satisfy it at my university.

Also, I was told that for most places CLEP does not count. I would ask about that, but I was told to take the class rather than CLEP.

For some schools the classes have to be ENGLISH. By that I mean having a major in some foreign language in which you had to write tons of critical essays in that language doesn't count. Being able to think and write critically in English is what counts.

man ive asked this three times already but no one answers. do you need to finish the whole year of english BEFORE you apply, or can you indicate on the app that you will take some of it senior year?

There is a place on AMCAS for future coursework, so yes, you can indicate your plan to take an English course during your senior year.

PRe-reqs must be finished when you matriculate, not when you apply. Taking the class senior year is fine.
