Hi all, I'm currently a 3rd year student about to start scheduling for 4th year and have some questions I'm hoping to get advice on. I'm applying to ENT.

  1. Do people generally schedule away rotations back to back?
  2. What is the ideal time to do away rotations? I currently have mine planned for June-July. I've read that most people do them July-Sept?
  3. How many away programs should I apply to if I want to do 2?
  4. What other medical school electives do you recommend for ENT (maybe anaesthesia?)? I'm currently looking to do outpatient surgery and SICU.
  5. How long should I take to study for Step 2CK? I currently have 2 weeks blocked off but not sure it that's enough. It'll be after my family med rotation which is known to be lighter than other rotations.
Thank you in advance!!

1. Yes
2. If you have a home program do that first then do the away rotations. June to July is actually quite good cause you'll have time to get letters from your away rotations
3. This depends on the program, competitive programs you may have to apply to several. Less competitive programs maybe only one. The summer is usually a common time for aways.
4. Radiation Oncology, Neuroradiology (or whoever does H&N at your institution), Allergy, SICU is good to
5. I took 3 days going through First Aid and passed with flying colors. Just make sure you go through all the cases, practice the note format, and read the example notes that NBME has and watch their videos.
