Hello SDN! I have been hearing and reading about the insanely competitive ENT application cycle that just passed and am looking for advice on my overall competitiveness. I believe my research is particularly lacking but my scores/grades are strong.

264 Step 1, all honors, hopefully AOA, taking Step 2 in September 2019.

Have 2 non-first author pubs and 3 abstracts/posters in urology (was interested in uro until late 2018) as well as a 5th author pub in ENT (my PI did me a solid and let me edit a previously rejected paper). Currently have an ENT project underway that I would be first author on but really don't know if its feasible to finish by ERAS submission.

How much does my lack of research hurt my application? For reference, I go to a school with a relatively strong ENT program (top 40) and would be absolutely honored to match to my home program.

Thank you so much in advance!

You are golden, ponyboy. I would reach out to the ENT residents to see if they have any interesting cases you can write up. All you need is a 1st author ENT case report or 2, and you will be set I think.

I would say kill your Sub-Is and be a likeable, non-cocky person, you should do well. Most of the people I know who didn't match this year with upper echelon stats like yours had subtle underlying personality issues.

You still have a fair amount of time before September 15th to get research projects submitted, so try to pick up a few more projects if you can. The projection is that this year will be either as bad or worse as the 2019 match due to people reapplying from this cycle, so get the best application you can possibly have going in.

I'm going to say you're lack of research will hurt. You have to take into account that s1 is going to be pass fail, negating your score. Do well on CK

No. Even if it goes P/F, it won’t erase scores. We have our transcripts from Step 1 with a score on it.

Get to know your home department, get good letters, do well on subIs, you'll be fine. If you can get more papers great.

You completely got this! Normally not having much research in your field of interest would be a strong mark against you, but I feel like PDs in surgery are more understanding and appreciate research in other SURGICAL fields as well. People switch between surgical sub-specialties in medical school all the time. Personally I think your Uro research will be fine for ENT and your new publications in ENT show that you can turn that uro research productivity into ENT productivity. I think you will be alright!
