Hey guys,

A family member of mine just matched into ENT. I'd like to get him something useful for his residency. My budget is around $100. Anyone have any advice? Something obviously that the program is not going to provide him with. Thanks!

Head Mirror, Pasha or KJ Lee, Subscription to an ENT journal, or get him/her something completely unrelated to residency--something that is a good way to take time away. If married, dinner gift card to a nice restaurant. If not married, free round of golf, or bowling, or sporting event, whatever.

I think I just listed the things I want (minus the bowling).

as a soon-to-be ent resident, i would very seriously prefer the cash. or maybe a flashlight. make a little smiley face on that $100 bill, just in case i'm the recipient =)

only reason I'd say headmirror is because many residencies require it to start--more and more don't, but a good headlight also often runs over $100. I agree with OtoHNS though and I use headlights now only.

My residency also provided us with mirrors.

The whole mirror thing is an area of continuing controversy in our speciality. There has been much angst among our staff because we use the headlights in the room for our exams. We are told we can't be true ENT residents if we can't struggle with the mirror and make it work. Must be a debate that goes on other places too because there was an article in one of the mailings recently about the continued utility of the head mirror in ENT training. The old guard think it has mystical properties that show them cancers the rest of us miss. Everyone else seems to realize they are painful to aim and provide no more useful information. Fun stuff 🙂 FWIW we were given a head mirror by the program.

Okay sounds like he has a chance of getting one for free... I had to shell out for mine.

I may be in the minority but I like using the headmirror.

We've got some Grams headlights available, which have great light and I use for office procedures, but messing around with the batteries is a pain and the headband is really uncomfortable.

Thanks for the advice guys. I might just get him a gift cert to a nice restaurant for him and his gf.
