Hold your horses there buddy. The GPA doesn't calculate until you submit to AMCAS and all your grades are verified.

hmm, i entered A- on my coursework section, so i think that's ok. i think they calculate GPA once they receive your official transcripts and verify the coursework.

Make sure you properly designate your science classes as science.

I designated a number of classes as health and they weren't included in science.

I tried to appeal to have them changed and they just egnored me.

If they don't make the corrections there is almost no way to change the designations....they totally lie about being able to appeal them. Also, this could cause a HUGE delay in your AMCAS going out.

Be warned.

How do you know which classes to designate as science...like are any psychology classes considered science classes?

There are two GPAs BCPM and AO. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Math. Psychology will fall under AO. This will be verified after you send in your transcripts.

I heard we are supposed to enter our grades numerically. For instance, for an A we would type in "4.0"
For an A-, we'd type in "3.7"
Am I totally wrong here?

I was under the impression that certain psychology and health classes are considered biology....like in my school functional neuroanatomy has a designator PSY588, however I was told to count it as an anatomy class which falls under biology. The same thing goes for my pathopysiology class....it is HSC411, my advisor told me it can be counted as biology.

Is this correct???

Really? I've been using letters...

You're supposed to use letters (A, A-, ...), AMCAS will calculate the numerical weight.

Mirror your transcript. That is what what your application is going to be compared to.

Here's another Q about grades. My undergrad uses credits for our system, where most classes are 1 credit (equal to 4 credit hours). In the AMCAS, do I put 1 credit or 4 credits in the box? I'm using the 1.0 from the transcript right now, but I'm wondering if that'll throw anything off.

Always put exactly what shows up on your transcript- so put 1 credit. My school does it that way to.

I also took some classes in high school for college credit. They were worth 3 credits each over there. I transferred them over to the college I currently attend where they show up on the transcript as .75 credits. I'm assuming I enter those as 3 credits since i'll be requesting a transcript from that school, but i'm just checking to make sure.

Right. For this part of the AMCAS process, just be a secretary. Don't think - type! You need to enter your transcript exactly as it is written, including letter grades, and use the instructions carefully to classify each course. Basically, you're just saving them a ton of data-entry work - but they'll check everything you put in and calculate your GPA. Be careful to follow the instructions so that you don't have a million corrections on your app - which won't torpedo your application, but it will look to your schools like you don't follow instructions well! :meanie:

Very interesting, but I would use your college transcript (0.75) since they already did the conversion for you. You have to submit everything that shows up on your college transcript anyways. It might be confusing to AMCAS/AACOMAS if you submitted two transcripts with the same information but in different formats. Just a thought...

I have a similar situation, I asked AMCAS and they said they really don't care if I list the transfer class for both schools. They said it is fine if you just include the transfer class under the original college and not even include it in your list of classes for your current college.

this may be a silly question but
engineering classes are counted towards the BCMP GPA right!?

similar Q relating to filling out AMCAS. For "course name" should we write in exactly what it says on our transcript even though that name might not initially indicate it's the right class? Example, for my organic chem. class, on my transcript it says, "CHEM STRUCT REACTIVITY" (I know, it's lame) so should I enter that exactly or put something more recognizable, like "Organic Chemisty?" Will AMCAS throw a **** fit or is this ok? 😱 Thanks guys!

Exactly the same. Otherwise, they'll have a harder time verifying you grades and courses as compared to your transcript.

Thanks 🙂 I'm just confused about this b/c one of my friends had some of his anthro classes count in BCPM, so I wondered (hoped) it may be the same for some science related psych classes...

I took a course called "physics of the human body"

-- that would be AO, right?

This is not true - I e-mailed them and asked if it mattered if you wrote "Gen Chem I" exactly as it appears on your transcript or "General Chemistry I". I was told that it does not matter, it's however you want the medical schools to read it.

I just put a comment on your mdapp. 🙂 Anyway, I did this too, and you want to enter the classes under the university you originally took them at, NOT how they transferred to your new school. For example, I took my jr & sr year in HS at SMSU (then it was SSU) in MN, then I came to UC Davis. I entered all the classes taken at SSU under that school with their credits and semester system seperately from my UCD classes that were on the quarter system so different unit-wise. Unless you for some reason do not have to submit a transcript (foreign school, etc) you should enter the classes as they appear on the transcript from where you originally took them.

I wouldn't completely change the title, but you could add "organic" after it so med schools know that it was ochem (or even just o-chem in parentheses.) As long as they can tell what it is, your fine, and you want med schools to know you've taken ochem since it's a pre-req. I didn't do this for my biochem class when i applied (it is called "Structure and Function of Biomolecules") and 2 schools questioned whether or not i had completed their biochem requirement. Thankfully they asked me, but maybe not all schools would.

In short, no. There is a seperate category for "engineering" and it goes into your AO, not your BCPM. If the class is over 50% biology, chemistry, physics, or math, you can choose to put it in those respective categories, even if you took it from the engineering department. However, if you classify it as engineering, it will not be part of your bcpm gpa.

Yes, if the class is over 50% biology, even if it is in the psych department, you can count it as biology. I put my neuroanatomy course in bio, as well as psychophysio, since they were primarily biology courses. Be consistent though, don't do it for one class and not for another similar one, etc. And be ready to justify what you put!

My advisor warned us they were really anal last year and all the engineering students' applications got delayed while amcas opened an investigation and took their engineering classes out of bcpm categories. Apparently how strict they decide to be varies year to year.

So what about human anatomy if it is listed under Human physiology at my school. Is this a BCPM course or a health course?

Also, am I supposed to list myself as a frosh/soph/junior/senior according to credits or year in college?

wow that would suck, they hadn't changed it till now? were those classes pre-req's?

If you haven't taken a pre-req, but plan to ( I have to take the biochem lab for UF) can I just put that as a class I will take in the future.

yea, but check the box "current/future"
