Hello,
I was wondering how difficult it is as a categorical medicine resident to apply to rads. I'm finishing up my third-year of med school and have been waffling between medicine and rads for a while. I was thinking of applying to medicine residency and then applying for rads if I didn't like it. Is getting into a rads program more competitive for a resident from another field vs an MSIV?

Thanks!

that's a pretty lousy idea. everyone knows rads is way better than IM. you might as well apply now and save yourself the trouble.

If you do that, you will significantly decrease your chances of getting into an already ultracompetitive field. Try to decide which one you like more before applying. I am a radiology resident, but whether radiology or IM is better depends on the preferences of each person. No field is better than any other in absolute terms.

It's harder to get into a radiology program from another field than it is as an MS-IV. You just don't have the time to make the contacts and there will be some doubts about your drive. If you really can't decide and are interested in both it would be an easier task to match radiology, do a prelimary medicine year and decide during that year whether you want to continue with medicine or go into radiology. That way you wouldn't have wasted anytime and it's a lot easier to get a PGY-2 Medicine slot than a PGY-2 (R1) Radiology slot.
