I have already submitted my AMCAS, and I understand that the pre-med prereqs needs 1 year of chem. I realized that I only classified one semester of class as chemistry (besides orgo1, orgo2, and orgo lab). I'm an engineer – I have a lot of upper level engineering classes (that I would say is 50% engineering, 50% chem), but I forgot to classify them as CHEM, and instead I classified all of them as ENGR.

My AMCAS has not been verified yet – what should I do? Is it possible for me to call them with a correction? Can I withdraw the application, and make the correction?

Would it significantly affect my ability to get into medical school because I forgot to classify one of my ULE's as a chemistry class? Would it be okay if I mentioned it on the secondaries that one of my classes can also be classified as chemistry in order to fulfill the pre-reqs?

what schools did you apply to? i imagine this is a pretty unique situation so why not call the schools' admissions offices and AMCAS and find out directly from them? anything any students post will (most likely) be speculation anyway

I didn't apply to any schools as of yet... well one. But .. I'm waiting on my MCAT scores before I submit my final list of schools.

Because I'm impatient, and I feel like my world is going to end, and I didn't want to wait until tomorrow. Obviously, I'll talk to my school's pre-med advisory people and call AMCAS but yeah.

just withdraw and fix it. if ur not verified yet, by withdrawing and resubmitting right away, ur only falling behind like 2 weeks. completing ur application mid july compared to like early august really makes no difference.

^the above is terrible advice. just ignore it. i'd delete it, but oh well.

this is a little different but last year, I sent my amcas with the same year for all my summer activities which took place in different states and were all full time. After 2 days of panic and over-reacting, I made a list of all the email addresses for the schools that I applied to and sent a short bcc'd letter apologizing and clarifying. almost everywhere was very receptive and added the letter to my file--the other places wanted me to wait until I interviewed to send a letter.

Your mistake is a little bit different, but I'm sure it will be something you can work with and correct.

Don't they not let you apply for the 2010 cycle if you withdraw?

Why not just wait until it is verified and then fill out the form to correct it? Mine was just verified and it said if there are any errors, there's a form you can fill out to have them re-verify those courses. I wouldn't consider it a big deal. 😉 (They might also correct it for you during verification!)

Now for my general AMCAS gripe. I'm an engineer too and I was furious that they wouldn't count "Thermodynamics" as chemistry or "Statics" or "Mechanics" as Physics. As a result, I have a lower BCPM GPA since I got some B's in Freshman level courses. Also -- I have a math minor and my grad-level math courses that I have B's in count into that BCPM GPA. Had I just taken College Algebra and gotten an A, it would "look" better.

😉
Oh well.

If you withdraw, you can't reapply until next year.

I am confused: have you taken all the pre reqs or not? Did you take 2 semesters (or one full year) of intro Gen Chem, with labs? It sounds like you only took one semester. Higher level Chems and Engineering classes do not relieve you of the mandatory pre reqs; some med schools may give you a pass on this, but I seriously doubt it.

If you are a rising senior, you can of course fix this by taking the second semester of Gen Chem, plus lab, in the coming year. You do NOT have to complete all pre reqs prior to applying, but must complete them prior to matriculation. Even if you are a graduating senior, you can simply take Gen Chem 2 at a college as a post bacc student.

was your 1 semester chem course a 'condensed' course that covered 2 semesters worth of material? likewise, with the lab class?

i did this, and it was accepted.

I don't know if this is true for chem, but is wrong for bio at all of schools I applied to last year. You just needed 2 semesters of any biology course plus lab. I only took 1 semester of general bio, then micro and 2 semesters of anatomy.

Engineer2MD is correct. After verifying, AMCAS sends you a message asking you to review over your entire application to check if there are any errors in your information that need to be fixed. If you send in the corrections within the alotted time (I think it's 7-10 days after they verify it), then they will make the changes and then re-review your application.

I'm pretty sure the AMCAS classification is not the important issue here. You have to contact the schools and see if they will accept those courses for the prereqs.

Don't withdraw. If necessary, send in a correction which lists the missing prereqs as future courses and take them this year. It sounds like you're only missing one prereq course. Schools will likely require you to take it before matriculating, but I doubt it will negatively affect your application.

The best thing to do is wait till you are verified and then submit for changes. This will only take 3-5 days versus getting put in the back of the line. You submit a request to change the classification to whatever BCMP you want and need to put the description of the class from your school bulletin with it. Make sure you use the official description, copy and paste. I did this for a few classes that I wanted changed. remember to be very aggressive with you classification of classes. I got a whole lot of psych and logic classes to count towards my science gpa.
