Hello,

I've recently begun considering the field of epidemiology. I have a BS in Commerce and have been working for a bank the past 2 years doing modeling and analytics with SAS. I love the analytics, but am not sure the field and work environment are right for me.

Transitioning my current skill set to a field with opportunities to make a larger contribution to the community and do some field work/research is very appealing, hence my considering this field. I am making contact with some professionals over the next week or so to talk to them about the work.

My questions here are more pertaining to getting into a program. My background is light on the sciences, but I have taken some stats and a lot of calculus and have a proven SAS skill set. My gpa was like 3.6 or 3.7 from the University of Virginia. Is this an adequate background to get into a masters program, or would I need additional work/course experience? I would like to apply to a reputable program, like UNC, but am confused by the doctoral requirements. Also, online options would definitely be preferred so I can continue working. Thanks for any advice you can offer as to the entry barriers of this field.

Schools want people with analytic skills! Your GPA is fine.

Having some public health experience (volunteering, working, or research projects) is a plus, but not 100% required for a masters. Yet, you will have to somehow show the program that you do know what you are getting into!

At the top of this forum there's a sticky about online MPH options.

Good luck.
