Hi! Everyone,

I have doubt on these.

The EPT will show what condition on the followings:
"False positive" or "False negative"

1. Secondary dentin deposit
2. Moisture contamination
3. Immature tooth(open apex)
4. Patient who has taken analgesics
5. Improper application / weak batteries in EPT

If you know them, please tell me.

Thank you for your help.

Black Rose.

1. Secondary dentin deposit false (-)

2. Moisture contamination false(+)

3. Immature tooth(open apex) false(-)

4. Patient who has taken analgesics false (-)

5. Improper application / weak batteries in EPT false (-)

👍 Good Luck

Hi!PeterHayek,

Would you mind telling me why you choose "immature tooth (open apex)"--false negative?

I'm appreciated to know your explaination.

Warm wishes

Sure...It's mentionned in Pathway of the Pulp 9th ed and Dental Decks but they don't say why...i guess it's the same reason for the false response by the apex locator (incapability to insure an electrical conduction through the open apex)

Hi!PeterHayek,

Thank you for your message.
My answer to this "Immature tooth(open apex)" at EPT is False Positive.
I eager to know "why?"
If you know it, don't hesitate to tell me.
By the way, I will inform you, too.

Thank you.

Best regards

An endo colleague told me a story that happened to him in residency.
He went to tell the mother of a 17 year old patient that her daughter needed endo and in discussing his reasoning/diagnosis one of the first things he said was that "her ept was positive." Before the doctor could complete his sentence the mother started cursing because she thought the "ept" was like those over-the-counter "electronic pregnancy test" things! This didn't go over very well, especially because there was already an issue with asking questions on the medical history (one of which was "any chance you may be pregnant?").

Hi!Bifid Uvula,

It's interesting to know that pregnant women can have a "false positive" response to the EPT. And thank you for telling us the experience.
I also want to know this " false postive" often happens to the pregant women? Why this is "false positive" but not "false negative" ? What is the reason?

I am very appreciated to know your opinions.

Best regards.

Dear Bifid Uvula,

I have a suggestion.
I will post a new thread to the forum and ask the others for their experiences, too.
