Can anyone give me any information about C-Cell carcinoma in a horse? I have searched and searched and can't find anything about it. I have a 20 year old Arab gelding whose biopsy of a lump on his neck near his throatlatch just came back showing C-cell carcinoma. Any information would be greatly appreciated. You can email me at [email protected] or PM me. Thanks!

A c-cell carcinoma is cancer of the c-cells that are in the thyroid gland. The c-cells of the thyroid gland produce the hormone calcitonin which takes calcium from the blood and puts it back into bones. It is the opposite of parathyroid hormone which takes calcium from the bones and puts it into the blood. I found the definition for it on a human genetics website so I hope this helps a little bit.

You can also look it up under the name Medullary thyroid carcinoma but again most of the results will be human examples.🙂

I checked VIN and there isn't really much there, some conference proceedings and some journal abstracts and a few threads with minor references. You might want to ask your DVM to check VIN-if he isn't a member he should be able to get a free trial period or you could have a vet student you know look for you (VIN is free for students)
