Do ER residents ever work 80 or more hours a week?

It's a violation.

In the ED -- never.

On off-service rotations, it's possible, but again, it's against regulations. Remember, it's 80 hours averaged over 4 weeks, not 80 hours per week. You could work 100 one week and 60 the next and you're still good to go.
 
SouthernDoc is right on. In the ED we are limited to 60 hrs per week (averaged over 4 weeks) and are required to have one 24 hour period off per week and not more than 6 shifts in a row. We might occasionally break the small rules, but most places do not come close to going over the 60 hours. In our SICU rotation we push the 80 hour limit, but they work hard to keep it close.
