ERAS and Applying

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm going to send mine in shortly after Septemer 1st. I don't see why it would be a big problem to wait until October though.

I'm bit confused, hope someone more experienced can help. Is it better to send out CAF/transcript/usmle/1 or 2 LOR first (on sept 1) and then add LORs and Personal statement at later date. Or is it better to delay it a couple weeks and send them all together?

Thanks for your input.

I think you need your personal statement in as soon as you're finished. Once that is in, I'd just start releasing your information even if all your LOR are not in. I was getting interviews before my file was complete.

Turn in your materials as soon as you can. No need to wait until your letters are all uploaded. Many programs wait until the dean's letter before issuing interview invites, but some programs issue interview invites on just the initial CAF/PS.

You must be using the "sga430" method to getting into a psych residency.

BTW, anyone know why sga get banned?

When did that happen? Holy crap.

He seems like a pretty decent guy.

When is "too late" to put in your app? I am still weeks away from officially applying. Will it hurt me (and how will it hurt me) if it's Oct before I apply??

I'm apply sometime next week. The PS is holding me up. Not sure how to write it or what it should say. I feel like I'm too old to slobber anymore. So . . .this is my big hang-up at this point.

You don't need to submit everything at once. Upload your materials as they are complete. Start with the CAF. It's easy to fill out and you should put that in as soon as possible.

How long before they download your CAF and other documents before they start issuing interviews? This is so exciting! Lovin' it.

sorry to hear that you didnt match. how many programs did you apply to?

bye the way, $2890.00 was the cost...
I figure its the best investment as far as returns...

I have not been through the fun, yet. I am a resident in the UK, just working on my boards now. Friends of mine (a couple) who applied last year did not have much luck, though. Admittedly, they were both FMGs applying as a couple; both needed a visa and their scores were just about average. They applied to 15 programs for financial reasons.

sigh...I'll write yours if you write mine:idea:
Of course, if you are applying to NE programs, I will have to sabotage your statement, naturally. maybe a manic genre??

Good luck--this is all that's holding me up also:luck:

Gonna butt in---pardonez moi----write those PS! 🙂 You'll fel much better therafter...the catharsis is a-maaaaaazing! Hahaha.... Good luck.

Wow 132...wish I had that kind of money...you do know we still have to pay for air fare and hotels, right? kidding, good for you. Personally, if eras was free, i would have applied to 100++ too... However, given the err restrictions, i have to settle for 25/25...nooney nooney noo...

Good luck to us!

Hi--All of my letter writers except one have churned out the LoR's already. How late is too late for this one guy? He said he'd have it done in early august, i emailed him and gently asked about it this month and he said it'd be done "soon", but i haven't heard from him since. I don't want to keep prodding him and being a nuisance, but I want to know when I absolutely need to have him get it in, so it's not too late. About two thirds of the programs I applied to have already downloaded the rest of my letters, so I'd like that part of it to be complete, ya know?

I got tired of running after one LOR writer so I asked another...I have still to hear from the orig LOR writer. Get a fallback if u can

What if I've already assigned this LoR writer to my application? Won't programs see that I've "de-assigned" him from them?

I didn't realize we had THAT many psych residencies. Mad props to you though. 👍

As long as the LOR has not been written, it has not been uploaded and thus cannot have been downloaded by the program. Basically, you can change the LOR designation as long as it has not been downloaded by the program. U can see it in ADTS.

Is anybody else getting EXHAUSTED from poring over cryptic psych department websites trying to determine the precise number of LORs each program wants... I mean, is this the first weed out task? I think I stand a better chance with Dwight from The Office...🙄

Im not applying to psych (a sister field though) and I'm not saying this with any basis whatsoever... I just gave 4 LORs for ALL programs I applied too. I don't think (and this is just my personal opinion) a PD will take it against you if you have too many LORs...He can just choose to read one or nothing at all. I guess it will matter if you have one truly excellent LOR that might get drowned out by mediocre ones

u can only have a max of 4 lor's per proram

yeah, that's why i gave 4 for all--make sure im fulfilling anyone with a requirement of 4 letters...

I've talked with two pds at two programs most of us would consider top 15ish, and each of them specifically was slightly annoyed when people didn't follow their specific directions. Of course, some programs don't even list their preferences on the site, so in general, it probably doesn't matter. But I'd hate to not get an interview somewhere because I happened to hit an arbitrary pet peeve of a PD.

Just got my first interview, btw. I about crapped myself in fear.😱

Hey man,

Congrats on the interview! Can I ask where at? Has your med school transcript been uploaded? Nice job!

Also, when a place says they want "at least three" LORs, is it good to submit just three or is it better to do four? At least two places I can think of say "at least three."

Some programs indicate 4 letters on Eras but 3 letters on their website. Anyone know which is more accurate?

In case anyone else was wondering...

Why is a file listed as being sent more than once to a program when I only sent it once?

It is normal for a document to be sent to a program more than once. ERAS reports all the details of your application transmissions. Therefore, if we transmitted a document multiple times to a program, we want you to know the full details. Some of the reasons are:

A Profile will be resent to applied to programs anytime you update any field in the Profile.

LoRs will be resent if your designated dean's office scanned in a second version, re-scanned it to make the document crisper or uploaded a second copy.

The ERAS PostOffice will resend a document if there were problems with the first transmission.

Sometimes, if there was a problem with the download of one or more of your files, we will requeue all your files for download.

Sometimes a program will request to have files resent due to local computer problems they may have experienced.

When documents are resent, they replace any files that are currently there, programs will not have to search through two-three copies of your personal statement or LoRs. They will only see one, the one that you requested to be transmitted.

CAFs can be re-sent because there may have been problems with the transmission.

Also, when a place says they want "at least three" LORs, is it good to submit just three or is it better to do four? At least two places I can think of say "at least three."

You want to show your strongest attributes. If you have 4 strong letters, then send them all. If you only have 3 and one so-so letter, then just send your best 3.

DON'T WAIT to submit your stuff. it doesn't need to be complete. do not wait to finish your personal statement or your LORs. as others have said, finish the CAF and submit, and the upload and submit the other parts as you finish. unfortunately you have little control over when your LORs etc get sent in. waiting is a huge mistake. if you wait, there is a chance that their interview spots will get filled. not only did i recieve interviews, i actually WENT on interviews without some of my LORs being in. get on the programs list, get on their schedule, get the process going. waiting would be a serious mistake. having a completed application done early isnt as important as just having some stuff in and having your name being circulated around at the programs you are interested in. get the personal statement and LORs later, those are less important.

As a marginal candidate, I can vouch for this. I put in my application 3 days ago and already have had 5 interview offers. I have no LORs and haven't released my Step II scores yet (haven't taken it yet).
