Is it possible to designate LoR writers after submitting ERAS?

Once LoRs have been assigned to a program, can they be exchanged for other letters, ie can you re-assign a different set of LoRs.

There are several posts on this topic but no clear consensus. Anyone with experience in the process know how this actually functions?

Thanks

you've already submitted your application? i thought you couldnt do that until sept 1? when can you submit your application?

1. Yes. LOR's are part of "Documents" and not part of your "Application". You may create new LOR's, personal statements, transcripts, a photograph, etc any time during the application process, and you can individualize which of these attachments are sent to each program.

2. Yes, but this should be avoided. You can attach 4 LOR's to a program, then "de-assign" them, and then attach 4 more, and repeat as many times as you want. However, on my end what I see are four "active" letters with a green icon, and then any number of "inactive" letters with a red X icon. More letters does not make your application stronger. It shows only that either 1) you can't follow directions; 2) you're computer skillz are bad; or 3) you're deperate. Send me your best 4 letters. If you think you'll have a late letter coming in, send 3 letters and add the 4th later.

So how bad is it if I accidently deslected my LOR#2 and then later realized I did that so re-selected it, so it now has LOR2 "replaced by another document" and right below it it is LOR2 again? I thought it would give you a warning like it does if you try to deselect your personal statement, it doesn't it apparently. I won't do that again.

Is this still the current practice in 2012-13?

Would you recommend the following (I'm applying subspecialty surgery):

Aug 15 - Finalize 2 LORs - From SubI #1 Chair, From Research PI

Sept 1 - Start SubI #2

Sept 15 - Submit ERAS Applicatoin

Sept 30 - Register and finalize LOR #3 from person from SubI #2 (ie, allow enough time in the SubI to get the right letter from the right person)

or should I:

Aug 15 - Finalize 2 LORs - From SubI #1 Chair, From Research PI

Sept 1 - Start SubI #2

Sept 15 - Register and finalize LOR #3 from chair from SubI #2, Submit ERAS Application (setup ERAS for a generic LOR from the chair from SubI #2)

That is, would programs prefer (on Sept 15):

A) 2 LORs plus an unreceived LOR #3

B) 2 LORs, then attach another LOR in late September

No, the process has changed. This is a 2-3 year old thread, I wouldn't recommend bumping old threads for this reason.

That being said, for the purposes of your question, the changes this year don't matter since you're only submitting three letters.

I would follow option A. Submit now, add letter later.
