Okay so publications on ERAS appear to be in alphabetical order of the first letter of the last name of the first author. Not necessarily by date. I have a large amount of publications (30+), with about 60% being in the field I am applying to.

My question is: Would it be shady to add a number before the first author so that my publications are in the order I want?

ie would show up as:

1. pub

2. pub

3. pub

etc

Some publications which are less specific to the field I am applying to, which were published a while ago, are showing up earlier than my recent work that is more applicable to the field.

Would anybody noticed if I did this and changed the order to most recent by date/relevance to the field I am applying? It comes out clean, and almost looks like ERAS numbered them so it doesn't screw with the formatting.

Does anybody have any advice for this?

I know this is first world problems but research is a big part of my app and I want to put my best foot forward.

Idk. But my grandma once bought a picture frame and your profile pic was the stock photo it came with. She liked it so much she kept it and to this day that Jesus surgery is still displayed in her living room alongside the grandkids

I think that's fine. Programs will not notice at all I bet

Not to de-rail but to OP - I have a similar situation. I was thinking of doing this is well so I'm glad that you asked. How "far back" did you go with your pubs? Between pubs/posters/talks I also have kind of an excessive count and I'm wondering if it's unreasonable for me to be including things from undergrad. (I'm a non-trad with undergrad/grad/postdoc stuff on my CV).
 
I had no idea that people had the dilemma of having too many publications... meanwhile I’m here proud to include a poster I did during undergrad
 
I think it's a double-edged sword. I'm assuming if you have this ancient stuff on there and you stumble in your ability to describe it appropriately in an interview you are done-zo.
 
Are you all writing about each and every pub under your “experiences” section?

I’ve got plenty of volunteering and quite a few pubs, Not trying to pad my app with the same research projects in two places.

In my experiences section I listed the specific fellowship or position or what not, during which the pubs were written, but I didn't list an experience for each pub. I feel like that would be double-dipping.

Any publication (papers, not in the broad sense ERAS uses) should be included regardless of when it was published.

As for posters/abstracts:
- anything graduate level and beyond definitely include
- anything undergraduate level is reasonable but use your best judgement (so if you have 30 posters and your undergrad stuff is unrelated or not strong likely don’t include)
- no high school posters/etc. unless extraordinary
- no fluff (ex: your ppt presentation on a lap chol case at the end of m3 surg clerkship is not an oral)

So if you have fewer posters, or if the work is relevant to your current interests, include undergrad stuff. Feel free to omit, but don’t feel like you have to either

Honestly, I really don't think anyone is going to actually look at every single citation. If I were looking at your app, I would say "oh, neat," very briefly skim the titles to see if there was anything interesting, give you maximum points for "research" on our rubric, and move on. I highly doubt anyone is going to sit down and actually read all of your citations - maybe your interviewers, but not those reviewing your app.
