BRS Path p.243 states that H. Pylori-associated gastritis often has increased gastric acid secretion.

BRS Phys p. 234 states that H+ secretion is decreased, not increased (as might be assumed).

Robbins p. 792 states-"Individuals with advanced gastritis from H. pylori or other environmental causes are often hypochlorhydric, owing to parietal cell damage and atrophy of body-fundic mucosa."

So, H+ secretion is decreased in H. pylori chronic gastritis. 😕

So, H+ secretion is decreased in H. pylori chronic gastritis. 😕

It depends. H. pylori causes antral and pangastritis. With antral gastritis, there is an associated increase in acid production-->increase in duodenal ulcers. With pangastritis-->multifocal atrophy, there is minimal acid production and an increase in adenocarcinoma. The different types of gastritis (chronic) caused by H. pylori seems to be determined by IL-1B. (more info than needed)

Also, just FYI, chronic atrophic gastritis (H. pylori pangastritis and Autoimmune) can result in carcinoids due to ECL-cell hyperplasia from gastrinemia.

FYI-BRS is overall very good, however, it is fraught with misinfo.

Case in point: PAN is associated only with HepBsAg NOT p-ANCA. (BRS says otherwise) also, diverticulosis is associated with BRIGHT RED BLEEDING not diverticuliits. (there are many others...too much to write down here.)

It's frustrating at times... 🙂
