So as of yesterday I pretty much went into crisis mode. Here's the sitch (Kimpossible anyone?). I was on the final draft of my personal statement (and IMO it was pretty damn good) when the girl at the writing center at my university suggested some very major changes that I realized were good ideas. Now, I was originally supposed to submit on Tuesday, but that didn't happen because I needed more people to read my PS. But I HAVE to submit by sunday because come monday I'm going to Las Vegas until the 13th and I need need need to send in early because while my MCAT may be rockin, my GPA certainly isn't. So, I'm not looking to question the morality of Essay Edge, I'm just looking for some good editors people have used previously. While I'm not positive I'm going to use it still, for some it was the fastest way to get a good essay.

Also if anyone would like to read my PS, I PM'ed over half of that readers list and none of them replied, so I'm open.

Removing post because of the high volume of PMs requesting editor's name...it's been 6 years, I don't remember! 🙂

I also liked EssayEdge when I used it my previous cycle (didn't use it this time). I was happy with it too. PM for my editor, if you want it.

FWIW, the changes they make might not be what your advisor was going for, although you can suggest what you think needs to be improved upon. It'd obviously be best if you already attempt those major changes and then have EssayEdge work with that.

Just have the PS readers here look at it. It won't crush you (or hurt you at all, for that matter) to submit a week or even 2 weeks later.

Thanks for the help guys, I was actually warned by my pre-med dean against waiting too long both because the verification process takes longer and because med schools won't select me once they get the better applicants (which they undoubtedly will). I figure the earlier i get it in the better things will be. and I guess the PS readers here don't like me because they don't respond 🙁

I used Essay Edge. I thought it worked out well. I liked it because it was a set of eyes that has no idea where I'm coming from and can read it completely objectively. They changed a few things, but nothing drastic. I was actually surprised by how much they didn't change. My editor just reorganized a few sentences and made the paper flow better.

Essay Edge works well if you're like me and are in a gap yearish time and live very far away from your home university.

wt about the entire application?? i know there are services out there that review your entire amcas, but im just not sure if its worth the price before throwing $ into it...any thoughts?

I can't vouch for EssayEdge, but I used a service called Ivy Eyes Editing and they improved my PS significantly. Their service was pretty reasonably priced (compared to the others), and I got plenty of follow-up (which is good because I'm a slight control freak!!!) My editor was very perceptive, detail-oriented and on point.

I used essayrx which was a whole lot cheaper than essay edge. The guy cleaned up a few things (mostly word choice), but didn't really do much as he wanted to "preserve my tone and writing style." I thought it was a good essay already, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to send it in. I'd say it wasn't worth the money I paid, but it did help me sleep at night knowing that someone had proofed my essay.

Do you guys send in your secondaries to be proof-read as well?

I don't want to bring up an old thread. But I am. Why? I'm a bit a flustered at myself. I used essay edge for my personal statement this application cycle. I'm pretty confident in my writing, but I heard some good things about this service. So I caved and sent essay edge my PS. The editor changed everything. Initially, I thought the changes were constructive, so I submitted the essay.

Now, a month later, I log into my essay edge account out of boredom. And I compare the two essays, before editing and after editing. That's when I realized this. They changed my voice, my intentions, those qualities that make me a unique applicant. I don't want to blame essay edge too much for my own decision.

But I do want to say: Think twice before getting an editor who devotes 30 minutes to your essay, something infinitely important to you but simply a task for him. Consider, instead, asking friends or family who have writing experience, or--for that matter--anyone who has good taste and is devoted to your success. That's what I did for my secondaries. And they read much more natural.
