honestly, i can't afford to pay for any more help (i've dropped all $2000 of my graduation money on paying for kaplan courses, OAT destroyer books, and fees). let alone, i still have to pay a processing fee for the 12 schools i'm applying to.....

i've been through a lot and would like to put it all in my essay. however, i'm not sure how personal this essay should be nor do i know what parts i should be emphasizing. i know this has to relate to optometry as a profession, but will they sneer at me if i haven't wanted to be an optometrist my whole life? also, as a scope into my life and allowing the reader to envision me as a person, what's the most effective way of getting my point across? what worked for you (stylistically)? are the classes worth me going out and selling plasma to pay for the extra help? any suggestions would be helpful. thank you all for your time!

12 schools? 😱 You dropped alot of money imo, and I don't think you should pay thousands of dollars just to get ready for an exam. You could have easily spent a fraction of the cost and be solid for the exam.

As for the essays, it really depends on what you want to write about. That's the great thing about the essays, they can be so open ended. I wrote my essays from a first point perspective. Like you, I wasn't interested in optometry until recently. Just as an example, I mentioned my journey in what I originally wanted to become, how I changed and then explained what inspired me to become an optometrist. There's no right or wrong way of doing it, but it should be on topic, concise and attention grabbing. Obviously pay attention to spelling and grammatical errors.

You should not sell your plasma to write an essay. If you don't know how to write an essay by this point, then how did you get this far?

Take your time and don't rush the essays. I spent over two weeks writing my essays for 4 schools. I reread them dozens of times, had other people revise them while giving me tips & advice along the way. Just put some effort into it and you'll be fine.

I think an essay should give a good idea about what kind of person you are, and why you'd be a good doctor. Imagine the admission commitee reading hundreds of essays - make yours personal, tell your story, put some emotions into it. It will stand out and get you noticed. I wrote my essay after listening to the audio "don't let anything steal your dream", and I was so inspired and pumped, I moved myself writing it 🙄. And without taking the OAT test or submitting my electronic application, I got an interview invitation from the only school I applied to - it must be the essay 😀...
Just tell you story.
