The prompt for RVU asks me to discuss unique characteristics, skills or abilities I possess that I will bring to their school and the osteopathic profession. I struggled with this for a while because all the stuff I could think of was really generic like I work hard, I'm compassionate, I'm commit to thing etc...

I finally found a personal characteristic of mine that I'm actually very proud of and that I think not many people possess. I plan to make the essay only about this one trait and discuss how having this trait has benefited me in the past, why i feel the trait is important, why it will be useful to have someone like me at RVU and as an osteopath in general.

The essay has no max length which is great because i have a lot of substance to discuss regarding my topic.

My concern here though is whether or not focusing only one thing is bad for me? I'm only discussing one personal characteristic and not a skill or ability. To be fair, I will give a lot of detail about it, which is better than saying a bunch of different traits and skills but only shallowly elaborating on them.

Is it bad to only discuss one thing?

As far as actual skills or abilities, i really don't think I have any that are so standout that I should discuss them in a med school essay. I feel like everything I have is pretty generic as far as other med school applicants go. I have a great capacity to memorize things, I can type fast, I'm a strong swimmer, I exercise regularly, I know how to have fun when i'm not working hard. These are all things I figure literally 90% of us could probably do and to be honest, I don't think they have any relevance to applying to medical school

TLDR: Is it bad to focus my entire essay on only one unique characteristic instead of a number of traits and abilities?

I find it hard to believe your essay won't be repetitive since you'll only be discussing one trait. I suggest trying to brainstorm one or two more but if you truly can't get three strong ones, I guess one strong could be better than three mediocre ones.

In my opinion when writing about yourself you should never focus on just one thing. You're essentially a salesman, sell yourself to the ADCOMS in the most truthful and descriptive way possible.

I think 3 is a solid number because it makes it really easy to format your essay:

Intro
Trait 1
Trait 2
Trait 3
Conclusion

That being said, there's no wrong way to write it though... If you use just the one, you could do paragraphs about maybe how you developed the trait, how it will help in med school, how it will help as as an osteopathic physician, etc.

No.
