I was wondering if there were any current Ohio State University veterinary students out there who were out of staters and were able to reclassify as in staters. I have been looking at the procedure and was just looking to see if there was someone who had already done it who could answer some of my questions. Thanks.

Hey, I'm a current out-of-state OSU CVM first-year in the process of becoming an Ohio resident. I obviously don't know if i'll be successful or not (here's hoping) but if you have any questions I might be able to help.

Hey Andrew,
I was just wondering how it is out there in Ohio? I was accepted last year but decided to go to Penn since it was closer to home. I was just wondering how you like it? I do not know if you remember me or not, I talked to you a few times on SDN throughout the interview process.

Hey Carolyn, how's life at Penn? Geeze it's been a while since I'vee been on SDN, which I suppose is an indicator as to how busy I've been this quarter. I really love Ohio State though, great people and school, though the weather could be better sometimes! Are you enjoying Penn? Well, back to studying, hopefully I'll get to be on SDN more in the future!

I have one quick question, what is the in state and out of state tuition numbers for Ohio. I saw on the website that it says 44000 for out of state but the aavmc site doesn't show anywhere being that high. I know they have the quarter system, so I didn't know if that is why it is more. So basically if you could just let me know how much you are paying for tuition this year and what you expect it to go down to. Thanks.

Hey Jen, I believe the current out-of-state tuition is around $48,000 per year (yikes!)- however, out-of-staters also get a $10,000 scholarship to help defray the cost of that first year. I'm not sure what the in-state tuition will be next year, but I think it will be $18.000- so you'll save about $20,000 per year as a resident- not counting the couple thousand in-staters usually get from ohio state in scholarships. I hope this info is right, I'll have to check later this week. Hope I've been of some help!

A 10,000 scholarship, I hadn't heard about that and can't find any information about it on the website. Is that a scholarship you have to apply for, or does it just show up on your award letter? Any info on that would be GREATLY appriciated. Thanks

Yeah, i hadn't heard about it prior to getting in either, but it's real. You don't have to apply for it, and i haven't met an out-of-stater here who hasn't gotten it. I think it's one of those things they have to approve of doing every year, so i would give the vet school's financial aid person a call to make sure about it. I'm not sure why they don't advertise it during the application process, i think it would be a pretty sweet selling point.

Hello,
I am an out of stater and was accepted to Ohio State the day I interviewed and the admissions person told me that I would receive $10,000 my first year. So, yes it is true!

Yeah, I actually called today and was told it is just something they do, I did have a question for Andrew though about whether or not this can be considered "income" while trying to establish Ohio residency. On the sample form it says that you can only use scholarships that do not require you to be a resident of another state...and technically out-of-staters only get this 10,000 because they are residents of another state. Either way I will take 10,000, but just wanted to see how it fit in with the regulations for establishing residency. Thanks.

Hey Jen, don't worry about the scholarship conflicting with your residency status. Although it is based upon you coming from another state, it's not a scholarship that is related to you maintaining your residency elsewhere. But wouldn't it suck if they were like 'oh, you took that money we gave you...bad idea!' That's the stuff of anxiety attacks.

I just had a quick question about what are "good areas" to live in in the columbus area. I have always been in small towns and so I am a little bit concerned with safety since I will be living by myself at OSU. I also want to keep my costs down, but right now safety is more important than rent, so any info on good or bad areas would be great. Thanks.
