I was told that submitting your application early is a good thing to do, so I wanted to submit mine in the first week of June. Well I had a doctor who had agreed to let me shadow him after Father's Day, but I didn't want to wait that long to submit it. So, I just estimated the number of hours I would shadow him and added it to my application, then submitted it. Well, now the doctor has gone radio silent and I can't get a hold of him.

What should I do? Should I just ignore it and hope the schools I apply to don't contact him? Should I contact the schools I'm applying to and let them know? And, do schools ever try to catch you in a lie during interview - They contact the doctor and he tells them the shadowing didn't happen and then ask me how the shadowing went in my interview.

Thanks.

If you made it crystal clear that the shadowing was a future event, then you need to 1) find shadowing elsewhere ASAP and 2) inform schools of the change.

Now if you used past tense when describing the activity, I can’t help you. And chances are you might not be able to help yourself either. If the shadowing doesn’t happen and even one school finds out that you fibbed, that information will travel to AMCAS quicker than Kim Kardashian’s second marriage ended.

Its been 2 days since Father's day. It is quite possible he is on vacation or this is his weekend, or something, and when he said after Father's day he could have been implying like a week or so after. That said, it won't hurt if you find another shadowing opportunity in the meantime.

Can you contact a colleague of his - receptionist, nurse, PA, fellow physician, anyone who works with him?

Also, don't ever ever ever lie in an interview. Worse comes to worst, they ask you about shadowing in the interview. Mention that you weren't able to fulfill the future shadowing with the said doctor but you were able to shadow x, y, and z specialty instead.

My application is still "Ready for Review." So if I withdraw it now then none of the schools will see it, right? I'd have to wait another year, but it's better than being blacklisted for lying.

Update the Admissions deans.

If your application hasn't even been verified yet, the Deans don't even have it. Take SadAsian's advice and try to reach someone else in his office. Perhaps he's had a family emergency and is unexpectedly out of town. He may have expected to be available after June 17th but whatever was making it impossible before that date isn't resolved yet. Give him 10 days to respond then double down. Things will work out. Be patient.
