evaluating your resident/preceptor

so at the end of rotations students are required to evaluate the residents/attending they work with and to make it effective, they are said to be anonymous and are submitted online. my question is if one were to leave extremely negative, disparaging comments about someone, does that mean one doesn't have to worry about any possible retribution? I mean given how they are submitted online with a login, it's technically possible for someone to, if the searched hard enough, find out who wrote that about them
 
Keep it professional. Even without searching your user ID, it's probably not hard to guess you who you are out of the handful of med students on the rotation.

If your criticism is well thought out and accurate, and the resident was truly deficient in some regards (leadership, education, interpersonal relationships) then the administration ought to know about it.

It should not, however, serve as a ranting session to make you feel better, nor should it be some retribution from your end. No one will take a rant seriously, seeing it as a subjective sissy=pants who couldn't handle surgery.

On the other hand, most administrators actually care about the physicians they are producing and take legitimate criticism quite seriously. Especially if this develops a pattern of poor responses. Keeping it professional is keeping it real.

At my school, we submitted evaluations at the end of our rotations. The PD got them that day. The residents didn't get them for 3 months, and got them all at one time, so it would be VERY hard for that one resident to figure out who it was talking trash. I'd check with your administration.
 
just keep it professional and vague (you may run into these docs in the future and you don't want them knowing who wrote the neg comments). But do be honest on an eval because it'll help the admins know if students should be on certain rotations or work with certain docs.
 
Everytime I read anonymous evals, I know who wrote them. Our program batches evals, so you get 5 at a time (and they hold them until you have 5) to make it harder to figure out. Its still easy.

That being said, they can be helpful and I've only retaliated a couple of times.:meanie:

Do you ever actually take what is said into account? I have definitely worked with malignant residents and attendings before; the way you make it sound is as if you just brush it off as the b****ing of some student, when often the complaints are very much legit.
