Basically, last Monday I stopped going to my MW German 1 class because my teacher is such a complete idiot that I figure I can use those 4 hours per week instead of wasting them on pointless lecture. Anyone else ever have a class so atrocious that they finally said "Ok, screw it, I can't stand this **** anymore" and stopped going?

And before anyone jumps down my neck about risking a bad grade, I've gotten something like a 99, 98, 95, 99 on the last 4 of 5 midterms and a 96 on the midterm project (not bragging, just explaining, if you guys took these tests you'd prolly get comparable scores because they're a joke), so even if I completely bombed the midterm due to not absorbing all of the material in the current chapter (which I wasn't anymore from lecture because she can't explain the dative case for German if her life depended on it) then I'm still gonna get an A so I'd rather do calculus homework.

But yeah, I'm just wondering if anyone knows how teachers that horrible ever get jobs in the first place? Every college I know of does teacher evals after they hire one and I just can't imagine how anyone would say anything positive about her...seems like crappy teachers must be really good actors.

There have been several that I've absolutely hated to the point of not being able to stomach going, but I always did go.

Sometimes you have to suffer through some BS.

I agree with this. I remember a class in animal behavior, a biology course. Lecture was a weekly turbo session (one 2 and 2/2 hr per week), where the prof simply read from the slides. I could have easily done that by staying in my room and reading it off my laptop screen. Yet, I share armybound's sentiment because if I didn't go, I felt that I would be missing some info and at times, she may take attendance and count that toward our final grade. Moreover, she may give hints on how and what to focus on for her exams. Yes, it may be a chore to go through an uninteresting lecture, but if it is helpful in boosting the grade, well it just might be worth it. Besides, you get an easy sleep lol.

Haha. I had an African American Studies Class. Went to about 3 Lectures the whole quarter. She new me by first name basis. Never took an exam on time, and turned in papers late (Got extensions on all of them because i was too busy being swamped with my science courses that quarter....every class seemed to have exams on the same day or week).....still pulled off an A. and got a letter of rec. she even let me read it ahead of time to approve or make a few suggestions. Great Great Lady, but I just couldnt stand being in lecture.

Well, I agree with going to poor lectures if you think that you will be able to find out what's going to be on the exam, learn some extra tidbits or otherwise get something out of the lecture. I go to my economics lecture for that reason...the teacher basically reads off the power point slides, however, when midterms are coming up he does give us a list of the type of questions that'll be on the test which is great and he does make the material interesting so I go anyway.

My German teacher? Uh, no, she just babbles endlessly about crap that doesn't even relate to the lecture and then is constantly confused why we're behind on the schedule for the class. Hence why I stopped going. Seriously, if you guys saw the midterms (for some weird reason she doesn't let us keep the midterms once they're graded, we're allowed to look over them then we have to give them back so I can't scan one for an example) you would probably laugh.

And yes, I doubt I will skip lecture if it's in a big lecture hall because yeah if nothing else I can get online and surf the internet or I can catch up on sleep.

I had a professor for 3 classes who never did anything other than tell personal stories about how awesome he is, then gave us lectures on actual material he was supposed to teach.

That's just school.

I'm feeling that right now.

Biochem is a major pain in the *** when most of the material (slides, reading) is online and the class is at 3pm. I still have to wake up and be here at 8am because I can't get parking otherwise... only missed 1 lecture so far...

Only 2 more weeks left... that's what I keep telling myself. :meanie:

haha, i know how that feels. i would just be burned out by the time 2pm rolled around.

My stats course is SOOOO freaking easy that I can't stand sitting in lecture.

The lecture is 75m long twice a week and the Austrian professor just puts the textbook onto powerpoint slides and directly reads from the book. I can do this in my own time in about an hour every 2 weeks.

Ironically, even though it is the EASIEST material I've taken... it'll be my first A-.

I skip a lot of classes because I prefer to read the book instead of going to classes, learning on my own time works better for me.

if you don't stand to gain anything by going to the lectures and attendance isn't mandatory, i don't see any reason to go. this isn't the moral or ethical dilemma that some nerds make it out to be.

The only lecture I want to go to is the one I don't have anymore. 🙁

I agree. Even if attendance is graded, its usually only 5-10%, and when you have a very high A in the class and you've been to lecture for most of the semester, it's an inconsequential effect on your grade.

I have skipped numerous histology lectures- I LOVE the material but the professor is very disorganized and his lectures confuse me more than just reading the book (which is a med school text)... so I study on my own and he asked me why I miss class and I replied with just lots on my plate...ended up making a 100 on my last test and haven't made under a 95 on any test.

guess you won't be asking that guy for a LOR.

Actually he has said he would write me a solid letter because I have one of the highest scores in his class but I have other people I have already ask so unless someone falls through then I am not going to bother him.

yea you shouldn't accept that offer. if a teacher has something negative on you, it's best to avoid that.

New professors are the worst. We have a new biomedical signal processing professor this semester and uh.... he can't teach or speak english. He is the nicest guy in the world but I don't understand him at all. 🙁

Whats worse is that his powerpoints, lectures, notes, homeworks, review packets, are all taken directly from the book so there is no educational reason to go to class either. I'm only enduring it because I almost feel bad for him because everybody else is skipping.

yeah... all of them. oh and theres a support group for people like us. its called "everyone" and we meet every night at the bar

I cant stand going to any classes because I always make 100s on my tests anyways.

Lectures usually guide people on what to study for when they are on their own. Unless the professor gives out page numbers or all of their notes, you'll either end up studying too little or too much. And remember, the goal was to save time, not waste it.

After a while, I stopped going to Chem 2. I only showed up for the quizzes. I felt bad for skipping at first so I went back to class one day. Turns out that I actually couldn't bear to be in the class. I just kept up by learning through the book. It was easier for me to study on my own by doing the online homework assignments. By doing the homework, it prepared me really well for the test because I was actively learning. I felt that I didn't absorb the material as well in lecture. It turned out to be a good idea because I do better on the tests.
