A couple questions for any current students in this thread:

1) How much problem-based learning, if any, exists in the curriculum? What's your opinion of PBL at EVMS?

2) How much time do you typically spend in class each week? What does your average weekly schedule look like?

Hey, I'm an M1 right now. So to answer your questions. We don't really have any PBL, most are just straight lectures. In Neuro, we do have small group clinical cases where we diagnose the lesion. There's also one in biochem that's similar. These are both second semester classes. Thus, no real opinion on PBL here. I'm content without. It's fairly straight forward in lecture and if you don't want to go, you have the syllabus anyway to study from.

We spend usually 4-5 hours a day in class, which is spread out between 9 and 3/4ish. Everyday is different, some have almost no classes. These don't include anatomy labs, which are M W F first semester. Overall, it's not too overwhelming, just it sometimes seems that way.

Hey guys. Congrats on all your acceptances. Second look weekend right now is scheduled for the third weekend of april (18-19ish). It's in the planning stages, but the M1s are working hard to make sure it's a blast. I'll try to leak more rumors about it as it comes along. Just make sure to save the date!

I am actually the wife of an M2 at EVMS, but I am using his login to post this message. I am a member of EVMS Alliance, a chapter of a national organization for the spouses of medical students, residents and doctors. We are a fledgling group at EVMS, trying to become more involved and to provide incoming students with as much practical information as possible (like the best places to live, what to expect if your significant other wants to get a job down here, etc).
One of the ways we are going to disseminate information is through a group on Facebook, named EVMS Alliance. We have just started this group, but we are looking to compile useful information as well as serve as a social network for students and their families. If you would like to check us out, you can find us on Facebook. We don't have that much info up now, but we are working on it.

It's going to be a two day event. The schedule is being settled on still, but it's basically going to involve some "mock" questions, maybe some question-answer panels. And of course, some good stuff in the evenings. Like I said, it's all still being settled upon, but we'll keep you guys updated.

Agreed. Although, while last semester started out nice and slow-ish, it piled up quick and ended up feeling like a nightmare of a schedule by the end (at least for me!). Thank goodness for all of our LGM and ITP practice blocks this semester 😉 Everything seems much more doable. Only 2 more weeks until spring break!

Quick question for current students:

What types of laptops should I be looking into if I wanted to buy a new one for medical school? Does EVMS prefer pc's over laptops or does it matter? Also I hear that some schools require you to buy the laptop at the school instead of on your own, is that true for EVMS?

I would like to get a Macbook pro to replace my dinosaur-of-a powerbook =P Any thoughts or comments would be helpful to me. Thanks a bunch in advance.

Just for anyone on the waitlist, I'm 99% sure I'm going to withdraw from EVMS for either my state school or another one close by . . . I hope my spot goes to someone who really wants to go to EVMS!

There is no requirement for Laptops at EVMS, however most people have them here. There's no preference by the IT office, as long as it has virus software (Yes, even Macs). I have a Macbook, love it, and won't ever go back to PC land. They've updated all the wireless routers and now no one has any problems connecting on campus (the old one in the auditorium didn't work great with Macs). So, go for whichever one will work best for you!

Nope. No dice here. Your best bet for a discount would be to wait until Mac does their annual back to school discounts. EVMS does have a contract with gateway, which allows for you to get a discount for a gateway (not quite my cup of tea). I don't know the details on this, but it'd be something you can check out by contacting the IT dept.

In particular for macs these days some form of virus protection is needed. They have finally made it into the main stream, which means more attacks, but have started to show vulnerability to hackers. Recently, at a security convention a hacker took over (had complete control/access) a macbook air in 2 minutes using safari.

Not sure if they're done interviewing. I went to EVMS last week to take a look at apartments and they told me that they were still doing tours for students which I thought implied they were still interviewing. Anyways, that's all I know.

There wasn't a whole lot of important information, it was more of a lot of persuasion. Not to say that it wasn't informative, but I don't think there were details that you missed out on that are particularly important to know now. . . PM me if you have specific questions; hope this wasn't an extraordinarily disappointing response. It was a really fun weekend!

I've been accepted to both Gtown and EVMS. I like the environment at EVMS MUCH better than at gtown, but I just have a couple questions (mostly because my parents are bugging me about it). I might be interested in surgery, and I noticed that EVMS doesn't send as many people into that field. Is this just because there aren't as many people there interested in surgery? Also, does EVMS have formal relationships with any surgical residency programs? Are there opportunities to get directly involved with surgery/research during 3rd and 4th year?

Sorry to drastically change the tone of this thread, but any help that anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated! EVMS is awesome and I really hope to see everyone in August!

If your ultimate goal is surgery, Georgetown is a better choice. EVMS' main focus is on community health and primary care to serve the residents of Hampton Roads.

Base your choice on other factors - cost, location, curriculum, etc - but not on inaccurate and specious claims like this.

Lol at this. All I intended to say was that Georgetown has a higher placement in surgical residencies. EVMS is known for its commitment to Primary Care. It is advertised very well by the school. Many factors go into choosing a med school, but the question was directly asked about surgery.

Have you bothered to look at the EVMS match list? And compared it to the GT match list? I am not recommending evaluating any medical school based on its match list, but what you have written here about GT being the better school for an applicant possibly interested in surgery is simply unfounded.

Look at the AAMC's MSAR and NRMP, it will give you all the info you need to know about med schools and residency placement

Thumbing through my copy of last year's MSAR, looking at the general surgery placement percentage rate, I see the following:

Stanford 4%
Mayo 4%
UCSF 5%
UCLA 5%
EVMS 5%
Columbia (College of Physicians and SURGEONS) 6%
Georgetown 9%
Howard 10%
Louisville 10%

Since your metric tells us "all we need to know," please "interpret" this data for a med school applicant who is possibly interested in a surgery residency.

Are you suggesting that it is a slam dunk that such an applicant would be advised to attend Howard or Louisville (Georgetown isn't even the top percentage producer of surgical residents in DC by your metric - better rethink your advice for DC med schools here) over the more lowly Stanford, Columbia, etc? Or even that EVMS beats Stanford and Mayo?

Useless data for deciding where to attend medical school for an applicant with an interest in surgery. Placing a high weight value on residency match lists when choosing a med school is fool's gold.

Before someone accuses me of knocking any of the med schools in the above list, I am not. All I am trying to point out is that residency match lists are not a useful indicator of anything related to picking a med school to apply to or to attend.

if you are not a virginia resident, i would say go to georgetown. i need some waitlist movement asap at evms.

As an EVMS student interested in surgery I can tell you right now that we have a GREAT surgery program and one of the best surgery residencies in the country. We have a well known head of surgery, Dr. L.D. Britt. And there are a ton of opportunities to get involved before your third year rotations. But I can tell you right now where ever you go you need to get to know the head of surgery because they all talk to each other, so no matter what program you want to get into the head of surgery at your school will play a big role in whether or not you get in.

This year alone we had 21 students match into surgery at programs such as George Washington, Boston University, Pittsburgh, Navy, Univ. of Illinois at Chicago, EVMS, UVA, etc. (http://www.evms.edu/students/docs/2008-match.pdf) There is NO REASON to suggest that you have any advantage over EVMS students in surgery by going to Georgetown.

There are lots of opprotunities to get involved in surgery very early too (and I'm talking 1st and 2nd year!! Don't wait until 3rd and 4th year to do it.) Many of our clinical mentors are surgeons and will allow you to come shadow the trauma team at Sentara whenever you like. In fact I'm doing a program this summer where I get paid to scrub in and watch vascular surgery procedures while doing research on it.

EVMS is a community medical school but that does NOT mean that we all want to be family practice doctors. Hope this helps.

Excepting the situation where you are applying to a very specific few surgical residency programs who do tend to filter based on your MD school (Harvard, for example, is known to prefer students from Harvard/Hopkins/Duke etc), most programs will be more interested in your personal accomplishments (step I's, clerkship grades, AOA etc) over which school you come from. Having said that, good letters of reference are also very important and Dr. Britt is literally known by everyone in the surgical world. A letter (or phone call) from him will go very far in helping you get into any program you want.

My advice would be to go to the school that you feel you will be able to do the best at, be that due to the curriculum, student body, location, or any other such factor. Don't get hung up on percentages from a website or postings on a message board (my post included). Best of luck, whatever you end up deciding.

On the EVMS waitlist thread, one person posted that they got a phone call on 5/15. So, not very much.

It's also graduation time for them, and I know the admin has been pretty busy with that too...give it some time...it'll happen.😀

Question for any current students... Orientation is August 18th, and I was hoping to fly out to my alma mater's first football game on August 29th (Friday) and fly back on Sunday. Would planning a trip like this be manageable? Or are the first couple weeks a real struggle to get set up and organized? Would missing classes on Friday be a big deal? Thanks in advance.
