EVMS Class of 2012!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
E-mail accounts were, at least last year, given out on the 2nd day of orientation. That said, I believe they were set up beforehand, but they told us what the pre-set password was on that day.

Your e-mail address will be the first six letters of your last name followed by your first and then middle initials @ evms.edu. Unfortunately, I don't remember what the default password is (nor would I share it online if I knew) nor do I know at what point in the summer the IT Department activates those accounts.

would anyone know whether mp3's of all the lectures will be provided? or should i prepare a recorder before august.

This past year, they were recorded by student volunteers. I'm pretty sure there will be something in place for your class.

If anyone is searching for an M1 roommate, we have set up a system to help you find each other, unfortunatly the information packets don't seem to be getting sent out, so I am trying to get the word out to those who havnt gotten them.
If you want to find a classmate to room with you, please pm me with a description of yourself and what you are looking for in a roommate.

(edited to take out email address)

I'm not sure which info package you're referring to. Your best bet would be to call the admissions office. If it's a financial aid package, don't hold your breathe...

Please do not put individuals emails on the web.... I'd advise not putting your own up, but especially do not put anyone else's up. There really isn't any way to control who sees it.

Thank you.

any guys looking for a roommate? im preferably looking for room in an apartment or condo near campus with another m1. please pm!

Did people receive information on student health insurance and orientation ??

I haven't received any additional info - it would be nice.

As far as information goes:

- financial aid has always been slow, so unless they've really revamped the system, I wouldn't be worried until mid-August (as seemingly odd and backwards as that is)

- information on things like student health insurance, parking, etc is generally given to you during your orientation week and that is plenty of time to act on said information

- housing isn't handled by the school in an official manner, but if you visit/post on the synapse site, the facebook group, the norfolk craigslist page (I'd focus mainly on Ghent), and here, you'll likely find a place and/or a roommate fairly easily even if you start that process now

Best of luck to anyone on the waitlist, and I look forward to meeting all of you next month!

Last year, the orientation schedule was e-mailed out around this point. There's really nothing to it other than showing up and registering (i.e., checking in) on Monday, so don't worry if it's delayed this year.

Financial aid is slower than molasses in Antarctica. Last year, several people did not get their award letter until after the start of classes. Thankfully, the billing department realizes how slow financial aid is and waives any late fees that are a result of delayed loans.

We've got a 4 bedroom townhouse at 804 manteo st that at the moment has two extra b-rooms. It's just me and another first year at the moment.

Hey. I don't know if people already know this or not but there is a facebook page for our class "Eastern Virginia Medical School Class of 2012" that has about half the class.

Just an FYI from an upperclassman,

The M2's are starting to get their financial aid awards, so hopefully the entering class will get them soon too.

Does anyone have any idea what our class size is this year?

Are any M1 guys still looking for roommates?

Thought y'all might be interested in reading this about the status of EVMS as a public/private institution. Currently, the school is trying to decide whether they want to become a full state school (currently it's part private and part public).

Not being a full public school means that EVMS does not have to hold to many of the requirements that the state imposes on UVA and VCU, however that also means that EVMS does not get nearly as much money as the other two state schools.

Of course, I'm not an expert on all this info and just noting what I read online. Here's an article that might be interesting to read about money flowing in soon for a new building:

Hi y'all,

Congratulations on your acceptances.
I was accepted too, but for financial reasons, I have deferred my admission to next year.
I have a hold on an apartment. 2-bedroom that is directly across the street from the EVMS campus.
Rent is $444 per month. I need someone (female) to take over my place ASAP. I already talked to the other girl who will be living in the apartment. She is M2 and seems very sweet.
Call 651-366-0236 or 651-696-7054 if you are interested.
So sad 🙁

That's awesome tobemd!😀

Congrats to everyone off the waitlist!
Is there any need for a microscope?

No - the school provides them for histology.

They are, however, shared with the M2s. If you have mine and break it, I will be very upset! :scared:

Is any of histo computer based? I had to do the whole "color what you see" thing in college it was maybe the worst time of my life.

You will find that histo at EVMS is very, very analog. Just wait until Dr. Scoville's first large-group lab review session.

What type of laptop would you guys recommend I get? Right now I'm between a MacBook and an IBM Thinkpad Tablet. I want the Mac for its durability and reliability, but I want the Thinkpad for the tablet so that I could take notes directly onto powerpoint slides. Any recommendations? Does the school IT department support Macs? Also, if I got the Mac I would have that bootcamp software so that I could also have Windows XP (not Vista because its horrible). Thanks for any advice.

That sucks.. I guess I'll have to repeat college and just google image every structure....

The M2 class is actually about 20-25% Mac users <shudder>; hopefully one of them can enlighten you as to dealing with IT with a Mac. (From what I understand, the school requires Macs to have AV to get on wireless, but they won't provide it free. Also, I think some of the recommended first-year programs don't work on Mac.)

As for taking notes right on your computer, I think it's a bit overrated. At schools I've attended, people start out doing it at the beginning of the year, but it trails off as time goes by.

Like DickyV said, there are a decent number of mac users in the M2 class. The anti-virus thing is the only problem, but I'm not sure what the deal with that is going to be since they changed how we access the wireless over the summer. Before you just had to download a free trial to prove you had something when they went to put the wireless codes on your computer, I'm not sure if that will still work now.

Overall I'd say get what you think you'd use more. I think I've seen a person or 2 using a tablet, but generally don't know that it helps that much. Most classes have the powerpoint printed out and given to you before class, so its just as easy to write on the paper versions.

But in terms of histo, you don't have to draw what you see, you just have to recognize it again later. Dr. Scoville is awesome and knows her stuff really well. If you stay late during Histo lab (or show up towards the end once most people have left) its pretty easy to get her to point out for you exactly what you need to see. Also the former Med Masters have "Scope sessions" before tests that are invaluable in learning the stuff, def. sign up for one when the test is coming up!

Hey I have a couple questions for current students. First, what should I wear to the first day of orientation? I'd like to wear jeans and a polo, but I have a feeling it'll be more formal than that. Do I have to wear a shirt and tie?

Second, where's the best place to buy scrubs? Online? Thanks.

I called the office and they said that we can be casual the first day (but nothing you wouldn't want to have permanently on your ID card). As for the other days, I'm not sure.

Does it say somewhere in our information that we need to have scrubs bought by the first day, or is this all going to be highlighted for us during the orientation?

Also, I'm going to be an MD/MPH student... anyone else doing the same thing? I'm finding out quickly that the MD and MPH programs don't seem to communicate well with each other and I'd like to get a group of us together (if there is a group of us) to get this straightened out. For example... classes to take and such. I realized today after finally receiving the recommended MD/MPH curriculum that I don't need to take MPH 609 Ethics in Public Health since it'll be covered in the MD curriculum... however, I signed up for it (not knowing previously) when they sent me that MPH packet.

Sorry... getting a bit frustrated and school hasn't even started yet. If you're also an MD/MPH student current or past and can help me out with this, I'd be so grateful.

Thanks for the computer help, I ended up buying a Mac today. It was expensive, but I did get a free Ipod Touch and printer..

....Second, where's the best place to buy scrubs? Online? Thanks.

To add to this question, I more so want to know how many pairs of scrubs are adequate? Right now I only have one nice pair from my internship and one dirty, dirty pair with stains.

People get scrubs from various places, so I don't know if there is one best place. They do sell them in the campus bookstore if you need them, and for scrubs the prices arn't horrible, but arn't the best either (some of the books can be significantly overpriced though).

I would think a couple of sets would do you. Just depends on how often you want to wash them (I knew someone who never did, but mine got kinda pretty goopy at times). I think I had 3 sets. You will have gross lab 3 days a week, sometimes 2. Plus, you may go up on your own and study whenever.

I had 2 pairs and while it worked, they got smellllllllllyyyyyy and gross. Just remember that these scrubs you will never wear again (unless you come to Honduras, we wear scrubs on brigades, and even then i don't know how much i'd want to save the anatomy scrubs for that) and when you need surgical scrubs, the hospital has them. I'd probably say you'll get scrubs cheapest online. You need to be prepared to be in anatomy lab on Wed Aug 20th, so that means you need to have at least 1 pair by then. You'll also need some gloves for lab. If you don't have them the first day, they generally have some, but they won't last long so you'll need your own eventually.

First day is casual. DON'T wear a suit! But menelaus is right, whatever you wear will be on your ID badge forEVER. So make sure its something you want to look at a lot. But really jeans and a polo is PERFECT!

I am not MPH and know nothing about it, so sorry I can't help with that.

My brother recommended this site to get medical stuff: www.allheart.org
I haven't purchased anything from there personally, but from what I've seen, there are affordable scrubs amongst other things.

Also, in the welcome packet that came with the acceptance letter (under the "advice from current students" section), someone suggested this place for scrubs: Gallo on 5900 E. Virginia Beach Blvd.

Seems like most questions have been answered, but I thought I'd throw my two cents in as well. When it comes to scrubs, I would probably say online is the best if you think to order in advance but the bookstore isn't too bad if you're in a pinch. One warning about buying online, though, is that scrubs from different companies may not fit the same and you might get stuck with something you aren't completely comfortable in.

Numbers wise, I think two would be more than enough. I had two reserved for anatomy lab, but I really only used one. Yes, they'll be ready for the trash by the end of it all but getting dirty means you're actually learning and not just standing back watching other people learn. To the person who said they had a bad pair already, be very careful if you choose to wear those. While you're not expected to be in the best scrubs in the world, anything that is too bad is seen as disrespectful to the cadavers and you won't be allowed in the lab. Exercise some common sense and you'll be fine. I would also suggest having a pair of scrubs for any hospital time (ER, etc) you choose to do because your anatomy scrubs (even if washed) will likely be too dirty/smelly to wear on the wards. As mentioned, if you're doing anything with surgery they will provide you with greens.

For gloves, there are lots of places to get them (online, Walmart, most drug stores etc) but that first day the anatomy lab should have them available for you so no need to be too concerned.

When it comes to first day attire, I agree with what others have said excluding the "forever" part. You can definitely switch up your picture down the road if you really hate it by paying a $10 fee and getting a new ID made. It's a bit of a hassle, but it's better than hating your ID photo for 4 years!

I'm sure you're all nervous, but you'll see very quickly that there really isn't any reason to be and everything will run smoothly.

...oh, and allheart is a great site for medical gear. They're fast with delivery and normally pretty good with prices.

Ok, as one of the few second years to roam the thread and be a Mac user, figured I'd throw my two cents into the fray. I love my Mac, wouldn't send it back for the world. Yes, there are frustrations in having to actually buy the anti-virus instead of getting a free version. A few of us get a license together (3 per I think), so it makes it significantly cheaper. If you can get bootcamp, then it'll give you the chance to run the dos only programs that can sometimes help studying. I got by alright without that, occasionally using the hubby's PC for stuff.

I can also comment on MD/MPH. I did my MPH separately, prior to entering as an M1, but not much is different. The two programs do not talk. My concentration was epi, I will still be taking the stats/epi course for M2s in the fall. Joy. It's the way it goes. If you can get the two administrations to talk and work something out, congrats, but they are each very protective of their curriculum.

Hi Everyone,

I'm the VP for AMSA (American Medical Student Association) and we will be having a book sale during the first week of classes. Previous students donate their books and we sell them at MUCH cheaper prices. So don't get too excited about getting books before classes start. Also, copies of all textbooks are on reserve in the library and can be used to supplement until you obtain all of your texts (and figure out which ones you actually need to learn the material).

See you during orientation,
Jessica

Hey class of 2012 and helpers of said class. I too am in this class. I have a house. I need someone to live in that house. That person could be you. You need to have money and you need to be cool. Not too cool, cause I'm not, but cool enough. And now for the specifics.
Rent: $400 + electric(50-60)
Location: Stockley gardens. One block from school.
Roommates: Me and two other guys.(I am also a guy)
You: I don't care if you're female, but you should know you'll be sharing a bathroom with a dude.
Contact: [email protected]

Hey, thanks for the mac info! This is my first mac and I have to say I'm enjoying it. Do you know the exact name of the anti-virus software we have to buy? And we just have to prove to IT that we have it on our computer?

I use Norton. It's simple enough and haven't had any problems. You take the computer into IT and they hook it up with the wireless network once they see the AV on the computer.

So does anybody know if there is student parking, or if we need to buy a pass for the parking garage?

Students have free access to the parking garage/faculty parking lot (depending on time of day). You should be getting the parking transponder during orientation. (Unfortunately, that means you need to either find street parking or pay the garage fee for the first day.)

I believe you can get a voucher for parking the first day or so. Just be sure to ask if you need one.

Congrats again everyone on making it here. Enjoy your first week! 🙂

Last year they validated parking tickets for the first day or two so we didn't have to pay for parking. They also issued the transponders within the first two days.

FYI for the garage: they prefer students to park on level 3 or above. But no one will be able to tell you are a student until you get your decal for the rear window.

Hello, I’m looking for a professional, responsible, considerate, laid back, and clean roommate to share a three bedroom, two and a half bath house in Ghent. Located in a nice neighborhood within one mile of EVMS, Norfolk General Hospital, and ODU. Common rooms are fully furnished and the kitchen is stocked with pots, pans, small appliances, dishes, etc. Room for rent includes basic cable hook up, wireless internet, private bath, washer & dryer, small garage for storage, dishwasher, first floor patio, furnished guest room, and parking. The rent is $600 a month and half the utilities.

I prefer a female roommate because they tend to be clean and easier to live with. Please contact me if interested [email protected]
I can send pictures of the place if you would like to see them too.
