Toni Dorn contacted me today and told me that she expects some movement in the waitlist here shortly.

i wonder what that means. she told me i'm in the "lower 3rd" but that i have 20 people ahead of me on the wait list? can anyone explain that? how long is the waitlist? i thought it would have a lot more people.

I don't know how big the class is going to be this year, but this past year, it was 19, so don't expect a huge long waitlist.

On the other hand, if you misread the title of this thread, this is the SMP acceptance thread, not the MD acceptance thread. There's a much longer waitlist for the MD class since it's going to be 140 (so goes the rumor).

The waitlist was originally a bit longer than 20..... I think around 35-40. I was #13. I'd imagine the waitlist will continue to move as people are accepted to medical school. Last year 40 acceptances were offered before the class was filled. If the acceptances were given blindly to whomever was next in line on the waitlist, then this is bad news for you. However, what really happens is Toni calls the next person in line and inquires if they are still interested. Thus, the waitlist moves without EVMS having to give an acceptance offer (I'm assuming that the calls she makes are not considered acceptance offers or are at least not recorded as such). Furthermore, some people have the courtesy to call and withdraw their application while they are still on the SMP waitlist (usually because they got in into med school).
So I believe you still have a chance. In any case, I advise that you continue to show interest (send an email to Dr. Meyer). Good luck. :luck:

Hey All!!

Just got a call from Toni Dorn and she told me im in!!! Im in biotches!! Now, i am a little torn cause I did get into Georgetown, but man...I just don't think you can get into a better program than EVMS. 90% of their students get into medical school without a lag year. Georgetown does have the prestige but EVMS has as close to a guarantee as you will get in this SMP business. It's $10k cheaper too. But D.C. i hear is pretty phat. The smart money is on EVMS, and Georgetown, with it's flaws, does sound like a sexier place to go to medical school. I am a little torn.

EVMS, from what I can tell, is a great program, but acceptance rate into the MD program isn't quite so high. In the past, it has been high because there were less students in the program, and less people actually completed the program, earning their masters. The high percentage rate is referring to the number students who completed the program and got in relative to the number of students who completed. In other words, drop-outs are excluded. As time passes, the program earns a better rep, more students apply, competition to get in is higher, and the calibur of students accepted is higher, not to mention class size has inflated a bit This year, for the first time, all the students in the program (19) completed it, but only about 75% are getting in. Those last few who won't get in this summer can reapply and have a good chance of getting in for MD c/o 2010 (so goes the rumormill). So message: While EVMS SMP c/o 2006 isn't a sure thing for getting into MD c/o 2010, it still leaves you with as close as you can get to a guarantee of an MD eventually. Regardless of all that jazz, you should come to EVMS anyway. Your deciding factor? We're more fun! 😀

Good luck!

see you guys Monday 😀
