Evms

That's a good question and something I'm trying to figure out. I just found out where I am on my school's waitlist and I'll probably be waiting until August(maybe even right until orientation) until I fully commit to going to EVMS... I think I'm just going to start turning in housing applications to Hague and Pembroke(?) just to secure a place. I think it might be hard to try to room with another masters student because like us, most are probably trying to get off waitlists. I think I'm just going to go for a single bedroom/studio, that way I won't be screwing people over if I end up not going to EVMS.

Jenna and platypus, you guys start looking for places? Find any good deals/places?

I'd rather be close to school so my choice is either Hague or Pembroke. But there is a waitlist for studios.

I would much rather room w/ a masters student just because it is so much cheaper. The difference between living by myself or living w/ a roomate(s) for a year is enough for me to get a car.

Roomates looks like a much cheaper option, but unfortunately I think I won't give up on my waitlists (or have those schools give up on me) soon enough to find one

I personally am not going to start finding an apartment until I get there in early August. Although I am sending in my application so I can get on waitlists for a few apartment complexes right now.

For current med masters students:

And for perhaps the most important question: are there Ikeas in Virginia????😀

I was thinking we could all rent a Chevy Silverado or something with a twin cab and make a run to Ikea.

I remember renting one of these in a special for only $20 a day.

I'm definitely a big fan of Trader Joes as well. It takes about 35 minutes from EVMS when there's no traffic to get up there.

There's a new Trader Joe's in Virginia Beach (about 7 miles closer). Drove by it last weekend!

The closest Target is on N. Military Hwy, but if you don't mind driving 3 miles more, there's another one in Greenbrier Pkwy in Chesapeake that is in a lot nicer area. There's also a Bed, Bath, Beyond, Best Buy, Farm Fresh, Barnes and Noble, other big mall stores on the same street.

Movie theaters: we have Naro (1/2 films) on Colley Avenue, and then there's a Century theaters in MacArthur Mall in downtown Norfolk. There's a Blockbuster too on 21st if you prefer renting.

NO IKEA?!?! Argghh. oh well, at least there's a trader joe's and a bed bath and beyond.. almost sounds just like home. Although I gotta know, I'm an avid gym rat and basketball player. Are there any courts or gym around for EVMS students?

EVMS students get a membership to the local YMCA gym (and no, its not what you typically think of when you think of YMCA - its actually a nice gym lol)

What type of equipment do they have at the YMCA gym? Does it have a punching bag by chance?

Just wondering if anyone has heard anything or seen any movement from the waitlist yet?

Starting to get nervous 😕

Don't get too nervous - I would expect the SMP waitlist to start moving until a few weeks after the 15th, once that whole process starts trickling down to people on the SMP waitlist.

That being said, this year seems to be the year of ridiculously slow waitlist movement for all med schools. Don't give up hope, but realize that it will be a slow process.

Also, just to mention it - today was our last test of the year - the physiology final. So this year's med masters are done!! :soexcited:

And now the waiting game starts for us as well. Since we are also on the waitlist, the school has to wait for waitlist spots to open up before officially giving us an acceptance, which means the wait will likely be longer for us as well. But I'm sure we'll all get in - its just a matter of time.

So far, there are 4 people that I know of who were accepted to other schools this year and will not be returning to EVMS. So that leaves 19 of us who will tentatively be coming back next year (there are some others who are still on waitlists for their state schools and may yet get in and not return next year).

I'll still be around all summer (and I believe Immuno will be as well), so if guys have any more questions, please ask.

thanks for the response and encouragement!

Best of luck for med! :luck:

Out of curiosity, how many of you guys are submitting AMCAS 2010 and if so do you know how many schools you will apply to?

I can't figure out the location of "the" YMCA that EVMS students go to. I'm looking at ymcashr.org and there are 16 locations. Is the membership to all 16? Which one is most convenient to school? Are there any that are bikeable/walkable vs. having to get in the car?

Looks like there's one on Bute St, less than a mile to the southeast, one on Brambleton very close to the one on Bute, one "downtown" on Willow Wood, and one on Princess Anne less than a mile to the north.

Its the one at 312 Bute St. Its right across the street from Hague Towers if you're planning on living there.

The one on Brambleton is just office space. I have yet to find the Princess Anne one.. The one on Bute is the one people go to - Blocker Norfolk YMCA. The school is trying to negotiate the parking fee into the price, but if it doesn't work out, it'll be about $10 a month. I usually drive there, but from school I would say it's like a 10 minute run.

But Hague Towers has it's own gym I believe... you can waive YMCA membership if you wish in the beginning of the year.

That YMCA looks good - worth the money, for me.

I'm getting my ducks in a row for a housing-hunting trip in mid-June. I owe you two a beer...

ok, so it didn't take as long as some of us were expecting - the first batch of med masters acceptances went out today 👍 😀 - congratulations to my fellow med masters who were accepted!

Are you saying you're in? Awesome! Big fat huge congrats!👍👍

How about Immunorocks?

Have you guys filled out fafsa? Do we even need to fill out fafsa? How does financial aid work with smps usually? I checked their website which said that the final deadline was April 1st but I'm not sure if that applies to medical master students. I think that deadline is for regular medical students in their program.

haha yep 😎 and thank you! Its been a stressful year, but obviously very worth it. There were quite a few acceptances handed out today, which is awesome!

You should definitely fill out FAFSA ASAP (even if you're on the waiting list for the program). I'm pretty sure the April 1st date is for all students entering in Fall 09. So if you haven't already, get it in as soon as you can. Financial aid tends to be a little slow, so the sooner the better.

Financial aid for the SMP works exactly the same as the any grad program, in that you are automatically considered independant, you get the same loans as other grad programs, etc.

How many of this year's graduating class received admission to EVMS ?

Not sure yet - because EVMS doesn't admit all the med masters at once, we won't know the final number for a little while. Today was just the first wave of med masters acceptances. (and I don't know the total number today either)

But we had a good class this year - I'm sure all 19 of us will eventually get in and be returning next year.

If the deadline is April 1st, wouldn't I already be too late? It's already the end of May. I just filled it out today and would probably take about a week for it to be processed.

No, I'm sure you'll be fine - might not be a bad idea to call the financial aid office to ask, but I'm guessing the only consequence would be that you won't be eligible for the "special" aid like institutional loans/grants - or maybe not even that, to be honest.

Are you sure about this? Even though they require you to submit your parents' tax and financial information?

PS Congrats to all of you! I hope our class can keep up the good trend 🙂

Yeah, I'm sure. As soon as you enroll in a graduate program, the federal government considers you independant for financial aid purposes, regardless of age.

And you're not actually required to submit your parents info. You only need to include it if you want EVMS to consider you for EVMS-based institutional funds. It still has no bearing on your federal financial aid.

I can vouch for all of the above as well. I'm over 40. My only surviving parent is over 70. I submitted family finance info with my FAFSA, and sent my mom's teensy little tax return to the EVMS finaid office. It looks to me like her info impacted the "expected contribution" number, which wouldn't have an effect on loans, just on grants/scholarships. And I don't expect to get any of those anyway.

Point being, all this submission of parental info doesn't have anything to do with independence. The thought of asking my mom to support me financially makes me snort my coffee out my nose.

I'm new to this forum, but i applied to EVMS medmasters and was put on the waitlist (top third). are these offers to the waitlist people or just the people that got in off the bat? if so, can we expect movement on the waitlist if the people offered yesterday turn it down?

Ah - sorry dcfireman, I'm not talking about acceptances to the med masters program. Those acceptances and waitlist positions have been active for a while now. I was referring to the acceptances to the MD program for the Med Masters students that just finished this year. Sorry for the confusion.

Hey guys, i'm on the waitlist, top third. Does anyone know anything about movement on the waitlist? I talked to Leah, I couldn't get a more detailed account of where i'm on the waitlist. How is it broken down in each third? I applied very late, so i suspect i'm probably not at the top of the top third. Also, if I made the waitlist this year, if i don't get off of it, and apply right away next year as soon as the application opens, what are my chances?

I'm not sure because they don't determine waitlist necessarily by when you apply. I applied early and was still waitlisted. What kind of stats do you have? that would be a bigger predictor. What will you do if you don't get in an SMP this year? another 1 year MS?

Well, i'm an engineering major from GW. 2.8 gpa (yea i know its low, but strong upwards trend, 3.4 over the last two years). MCAT 32S(10,12,10) and 3+years of fire/EMS experience. Also, my sister is an evms alum(MD). I think the reason i got waitlisted was because my application completed pretty late, a professor took FOREVER to submit his recommendation.

If I don't get in, I may go abroad... I'm applying to amcas this june to a few low teir schools just to try my luck. But this program is my best shot.

Anyone know the percentage of accepted MSP student versus waitlist ??

So, does everyone who is accepted to the Med Masters Program apply to EVMS (the med school) that same year in order to avoid a gap year? Does anyone know if the same references can be used? I am assuming that when EVMS receives apps from the med masters students, they put them on hold until they receive the first semester grades....is this correct? Wouldn't it also be unreasonable to try and obtain references from EVMS professors since they don't really know any of the med applicants, yet?

Yep - everyone applies to at least EVMS and usually a few of their state schools. Some people applied to DO schools as well. Getting into EVMS isn't the only way to avoid a gap year - several people got into other schools this year, and some of them will be going there instead of EVMS next year (usually due to getting in-state tuition or being closer to family).

As for our applications to EVMS itself - for all intents and purposes, EVMS considers the med masters a separate applicant pool. All med masters will receive a secondary, and will then be put on hold until March, when everyone will receive an interview at the end of interview season. Everyone gets put on the waitlist until after classes are over. We are then pulled off the waitlist at the discretion of the executive committee generally based on performance in the program.

For EVMS's purposes, you don't have to get references from the EVMS professors. And for other schools that you are applying to, Dr. Meyer will send update letters with your grades in classes and whatnot.

I'm getting ready for an apartment hunting trip to Norfolk, and from looking (obsessively, for months) at craigslist, it looks like a big price divider is whether a place has A/C or not.

So what are the prospects for survival without A/C? I'm coming from the west coast, where there are maybe 3 days a year that are uncomfortably hot, and humidity is a non-issue. I don't mind heat, but I don't know how I'll do w/humidity. So, I wouldn't try to live without A/C in Florida. Is VA far enough north that A/C is optional?

Definitely get a place with A/C for the spring/summer/fall months and a heater for the winter. I guess if you don't, plan on spending that time in the library or some other place that has A/C instead. Humidity is definitely an issue (haha for me at least). In California, we can just pop the window open and let the breeze go thru. NOT the same on the east coast. When you come visit, you can experience it yourself! I suppose you could also get one of those portable A/C units to put in your window, but the price to run the A/C isn't bad. For example, we spent about $70/month on gas and electricity these last two warm months (though this is in a 2 bdrm condo).

👍

Sorry I've been MIA these last couple of days - I've just been enjoying my time back in California! 😀 I haven't had my double double yet...though Daedalus you might get to it before I do! 😉 Congrats to you by the way!

yum... get those animal style fries too!

How difficult is it to secure a studio at Hague or Pembroke Towers? I know there are some available starting mid June but I don't plan on moving there until August and don't want to pay for June/July while I'm not even there. You guys think it's a pretty safe bet to wait and try to get a studio that opens up sometime in mid/late July? Or should I just secure a place now and pay the extra rent while I'm not living there? thanks

😱 how could not not? I'm planning on living on In-N-Out during the week or two I'm back home 😀

And I wholeheartedly agree with Immuno about the AC issue. Maybe I'm just a wimpy southern Californian, but I couldn't imagine living here without AC. The humidity is pretty bad at times, and its been well into the 80s/90s these past few weeks.

Sorry, can't help you with this one. Does the renters office in those buildings not know if they'll have any August 1st openings yet?

I have a question in regards to A/C as well...what are the chances of surviving with WINDOW A/C's, as oppose to central heat and air? I'm used to Sacramento summers (high 90s-100s), but I dont think I would want to amplify that with humidity. I have also been looking for a place obsessively, and I wont be able to make it out to norfolk before school starts...talk about stress... :scared:

Hey as long as you have some form of AC, I think you would be fine 👍

Hello guys,
Anyone from cali that would like to meet up and be class buddies?

I just got accepted into the program! 🙂 Advices?

Congrats HomeMD! Read through the last few pages of this thread and you'll find some good info - if you have any specific questions, post them. Immuno and I are happy to answer questions. Get on the housing search now.

Where are you from in CA?
