Like Andre Ponce said, there are lots of places around the school in Ghent. Lots of students live in Hague Towers and Pembroke Towers, but most live in other places around the area. I would say almost everyone lives within a mile or two of school, although a few commute from Hampton or VA Beach (usually those living with family)

If you can't make it to the area, check out craigslist or sinapse (https://sinapse.evms.edu)

Thanks guys for all your answers! I know I've been asking a lot of questions....but I do have one (or two...or three) more:

What is a typical day like for a med master? What's the schedule like and is it tough to take and study for all those classes at once? Do the professors coordinate exam days or will we often get unlucky and have multiple exams one after another?

Thanks a lot again! And that's the last of my questions I promise!

Typical day varies a lot. First semester, you'll generally have class from 9-noon (either all lecture, or 1 lecture and 2 hours of histo lab depending on the day), and then a few days a week you'll have afternoon classes from 1-2 or 1-3. Other days you'll have all afternoon free because the med students have anatomy lab and the clinical classes in the afternoons.

Second semester is a little different, but not much - you'll have neuroscience labs in the afternoons about once a week, but still won't have the afternoon clinical and development courses, so most afternoons will still be free. On the other hand, your thesis work will start to ramp up in second semester, so it would be good to use some of that time to work on your thesis.

As for how tough it is - yes its tough because you're taking med school courses and are being graded against the med students and are expected to do well because you're trying to prove your worthiness to get into med school. But think about it this way - the med students are taking at least 1-2 difficult classes more than you are and those classes take up a significant amount of time (anatomy lab is 3 hours a day 3 days a week, in addition to 1-2 hours of anatomy lecture on those days - and on the days they don't have anatomy, their afternoons are usually entirely taken up by the clinical skills class). Thats an extra 4-5 hours of class every day that you don't have to take as a med master, as well as a lot of extra tests that you don't have to study for. There's absolutely no reason for you to not be scoring at least at the M1 average (if not constantly beating it) if you put in the time. Use your time wisely (those free afternoons that the M1s are in class are prime study time) and you should do fine.

The exams are all planned out well in advance when they make the master schedule for the semester (which is actually already done for the most part), so they are spaced out as much as possible. Usually you'll have one test a week starting about 3 weeks into the semester, and every 4-5 weeks you'll have an off week while the M1s have an anatomy test or whatever.

Hopefully this answered your questions - if not, or if you have any more, please ask!

When does EVMS send out orientation and other school info to those accepted to the Masters program? So far I've only received medical and financial aid forms but am wondering what the orientation schedule will be like, how we need to be prepared for the first day, etc etc. Does anyone have this info?

Anyone on the waiting list know their position on it yet? I have tried calling several times since I received notification that I was on the waiting list and no one ever answers! I have written an e-mail asking as well, and received no response! 🙁

I'm not sure, but it will probably be a little closer to orientation - I'm one of the students helping to plan parts of orientation for you guys and at least the stuff we're handling isn't done yet (but might not be in any schedule the school sends to you).

However, I can give you a quick rundown of orientation. Med masters go through the same orientation week stuff as the M1s except the WCC. It starts on August 16th bright and early (8am IIRC) - Monday and Tuesday are basically sitting through a lot of info sessions. They'll cover things like health insurance, library policies, how the construction will be progressing throughout the year, honor code, e-mail and computer accounts, class schedules, parking, ID pictures; you'll fill out and sign a bunch of forms, etc. etc. There's absolutely no preparation needed - they even give you free breakfast and lunch. Then there will be social events every night to help you get to know your classmates. We try to keep you busy.

Then classes start on Wednesday. However, it's mostly Anatomy, so med master classes really start on Thursday. Again, no need to prepare, but be ready to start right into the material. You'll pick up the syllabi during the first few days.

Who are you calling? You should be trying to contact Leah Solomon, not Dr. Meyer or Rose.

Thanks Daedalus! What do WCC and IIRC stand for? LOL sorry just curious. And thanks for organizing our orientation, very much appreciated!

Sorry, WCC is "White Coat Ceremony", and IIRC is "If I Recall Correctly"

Hey there, you need to catch her bright and early. I am on the West Coast so by the time it's 8 am here, it's 11 am in VA. I caught her once when I called at 7:30 am, which was 10:30 am EST.

Quick question. I will be missing the first Friday of class because I need to fly home for an event Thursday night. Is it bad to miss one of the first days of class? Will I be missing a lot? If so could it be remedied by sending someone in with a tape recorder?

Missing a lecture or two is survivable, but missing a histo lab is bad. Last year, the first histo lab was on Thursday afternoon, and on Friday there were a couple hours of lecture. Can't really predict if it'll be the same this year.

You'll probably be fine, just be proactive and polite. This is *not* a good first impression to make on the faculty, so I'd keep it quiet unless you have to miss a lab, and then you'll want to make arrangements with the professor.

Where do students usually live? Should I be looking for places right now or will there still be availability when I start looking at the beginning of July?

Almost everyone lives within a mile of school in the Ghent area, but there are a few who commute in from VA Beach or Hampton or Portsmouth. As with most things, the earlier you start looking, the better, but there will definitely be plenty of places available throughout July.

Hi everyone. I'm sorry if this was covered but 33 pages was a lot to scroll through 😉 and I am seriously considering EVMS.
For those in the SMP, does EVMS offer officially stated special consideration for their med school?
Any stats on how much it helps (official or not), what you have to achieve while in SMP to get into school, does EVMS SMP help with other med schools at all or just mainly EVMS as other schools don't use it very much, etc?
Sorry for the ramble. Thanks for any info

Definately not a big deal as long as you dont miss lab. I rarely ended up going to class but it depends on how you learn best.

Yes, 33 pages is a lot, but there is a lot of good information. If you at least read through the last 5-10 pages of the thread, you'll get a lot of good and recent information that will likely answer most of your questions.

AFAIK, no SMP has an officially stated linkage or guaranteed admission (RFU used to, but not anymore). But EVMS's numbers speak for themselves, with 75-90% of SMP students ending up in med school without a glide year, and usually the 1 or 2 students who don't get in each year will get in somewhere the next application cycle.

DrMidlife has some great, lengthy posts about EVMS (posts 1371, 1585, 1591, etc.). Read those and the last several pages, and let me know if you have any more questions.

Completely right. This post had almost all the answers I was looking for. Thanks.

DrMidLife I PMd you with a few questions if you don't mind.

Take care

Does anyone know about how many people are on this waiting list. And at this point what are my realistic chances of perhaps getting a spot in this SMP? :xf:

This directed at those already accepted and looking for roommates. Myself and another early/mid 20's gentleman are looking for M/F for a 3br walking distance from campus. If you are interested PM me and we can discuss further.

Regarding financial aid, when could be expect to receive any information on this that we need to act on? I see the first dispersement date is 8-12 and I believe the tuition payment is due first day of class or something. From this point on can anyone give a quick overview of the rest of the process up until dispersement so I know I am not forgetting to do anything in the process without having been approached by EVMS, thanks.

I think you mean disburse.

1. Send a friendly and polite email to [email protected] asking if your file is in order. Plan on doing this again at the beginning of August.
2. Assuming the financial aid office says your file is in order, assume you don't have to worry about paying tuition. Even if you get a bill. You're getting loans, the loans will cover tuition, and you won't be involved.
3. Plan on needing to wait up to a month after school starts before you see any money for living expenses.
4. Get direct deposit set up as soon as you get to campus.

I've been at schools that have financial aid processing and disbursement done by the first day of school. EVMS is not one of them.

I really don't mean to hijack this thread and I can't pull up anything when I'm searching for it, but according to the EVMS website, it says that applicants must have no grade lower than C in prereqs. The way the classes are offered, I can't take the 2 classes I need to until winter and spring, however applications will be due by then (I think it's from October-April). Can I still apply and indicate that I'm going to be repeating, or do I have to scrap EVMS from my list of potential schools?

I assume you're talking about the med masters. Don't get yourself into an SMP without having the credentials to get into med school. Regardless of an SMP's requirements, generally you can't get into med school with less than a C in a prereq.

If the rest of your app is competitive, then there's no reason to wait to apply. However, if you'll be applying without an MCAT score (or with an uncompetitive MCAT score) and with unmet requirements, for example, then in my opinion you're not ready to apply to the med masters.

Keep in mind that good SMPs are competitive. I think I heard Dr. Meyer say there were 500 apps for 20 seats last year. Also keep in mind that a good SMP is only going to take students that have a great med school app with the sole exception of undergrad GPA. It would be a mistake to expect an SMP to fix anything other than undergrad GPA.

Best of luck to you.

Yeah, that's why I'm waiting till next yr to apply to medical school but my only concern is that EVMS' applications are due before I'll have a chance to retake those classes that I got c-'s in due to financial/personal problems. I have really good EC's and I'm taking the MCAT in January ( I got a 28S) this past time. :/
I just don't know if EVMS requires those 2 classes to be retaken BEFORE I apply or if I tell them that I"m goign to before I matriculate that'll be enough?

Is there a facebook group for the class of 2011? I looked through the past few pages and searched on fb, but couldn't find anything.

I can make one if there isn't already...just wasn't sure if I missed something.

I haven't found one either. If you make do post the link here - I'd love to join.

Call/e-mail Dr. Meyer and ask - thats going to be your best way to find out for sure. The info on the website doesn't specify a grade needed for admission, but I'm guessing that "successfully completed" means that you at least got a C (i.e. the minimum required for med school admissions, which is what the program is for). If you don't meet minimum standards to get into med school, there's no reason for the med master program to take you, and my thoughts are that they probably won't accept you until you have retaken them.

If anyone is looking for a place to live, I have a great condo RIGHT NEXT TO EVMS, as close as you can get besides Hague Club. It is a 2BR/1BA, comes fully furnished at $800/mo, utilities included, including cable television and wireless internet.

I'm a 4th year student, and for a large portion of the year I won't even be around so you'll have the place all to yourself a good deal of the time.

email me at [email protected] if you'd like to know more about the place or see pictures.

Lewis Hall is where classes were last year, with some in Hofheimer. But, there's a new academic building, and it's my understanding that classes will be there for the coming school year. You can probably get up-to-date info on this on the main website www.evms.edu.

Parking is provided and free - this is changing from last year as well. Basically there's a day lot that's a little bit of a walk from the building where classes are held, and the night lot is closer.

That would be sweet, but unfortunately not going to happen. The new building isn't supposed to be up and running until fall 2011 (and we all know how construction timelines and goals work). But it will be very nice once its done.

So classes will still be in the two lecture halls in Lewis Hall.

Like DrMidlife said, parking is included in your fees - students can park 24/7 in the staff garage, and after 5pm (IIRC) in the slightly closer visitor garage.

Did anyone who attended EVMS get into other virgina medical school such as: VCU,UVA??

Do you guys know what is the question for the persoanal statement and how long is it?

To previous med masters: What were your study schedules like? How often and long did u study? What skills did you use?

I want to and need to do really well at EVMS and I was wondering what is the best way to achieve this?

Hi guys,

I just got the call from Leah today that I have been accepted to the Med Masters program! I am coming from Michigan and have never even been to Virginia so any help regarding housing would be great. I am a 24 year old female, and would prefer to live with other females, so if anyone is looking for a roommate, please message me.

Thanks.

Congratulations! I also got in very late to the med masters program, so I know how it feels to have to rush to find everything. But no worries, there are still lots of students looking for housing.

My suggestion would be to request to join the "EVMS Class of 2014" facebook group and check there. There have been several girls in the past few days who are looking for roommates. You can also check around Craigslist or the MyEVMS/Sinapse site, but I seriously think the facebook group might be your best bet.

Best way is to find out what works best for you. (probably not the advice you were looking for because its pretty cliche and doesn't tell you anything haha, but its true). Everyone has to change their studying style in med school because it is just so different from undergrad.

I studied way less second semester because I had learned how to study more efficiently. The entire year I also had a study group that met before every test to go over all the material and make sure that everyone understood it. Some people in my study group made flashcards for everything (which would have driven me to insanity). Others made detailed hand-written study guides.

They start you off slowly the first few weeks and give you a small 100-question test that is only worth 10% of your grade in 2 classes which gives you an idea of how the tests work and what to expect. But then they start hitting you with information, so be ready. But as a med master, you have way more study time than the M1s, so you'll always have that advantage on the med students.

What I meant was that I had become better at knowing what was important (i.e. high-yield) information that the professor was more likely to test and what wasn't. Unfortunately, you still have to go over the other stuff because there will always be that minority of questions that test small details that you weren't expecting. I study by quickly going though the material over and over. I can't stand to make flashcards or rewrite anything, so I just read the syllabus through.

What you'll figure out by the end of the first week of class is that the majority of your fellow med masters, and the majority of M1's, are more than happy to talk about study strategy, fill you in on study groups, get you access to old exams and various key materials, etc. You'll have a "buddy", an M1 who just finished the med masters, and that person will help keep you on track.

Daedalus is the best that ever lived at being a helpful source of info and support at EVMS, and the new M1's-who-were-med-masters are likely to follow his example.

Best of luck to you.

withdrew today. good luck.

if you are going to the program make sure you get nothing lower than a B. I repeat, NOTHING LOWER THAN B. all A++++s and a C+ is worse than normal A's and a B. The admins at the program told me this. They also told me I was pretty!

ps. those from michigan or tennessee, you are probably at the very tip top of the waitlist.

oh oh oh!!! Ms. Michigan aka aspiring doc has already gotten in 4 days ago, exactly when evms called me. Tennessee next?
