If you take the MCAT in March, you'll have a score in April, which is late. An April MCAT score comes out in May, and that's too late. If you could get a 30 in January, do it.

Otherwise go ahead and apply early, and tell a story that is as compelling as possible. Make sure to emphasize that you understand the importance of a 30+ score and that you're doing everything you can to ensure getting such. And when you get that 30+, resubmit everything from your first app, and add a new letter beseeching the admissions folks to reconsider you.

28 seats, 500+ apps, so don't put all your eggs in this basket.

Best of luck to you.

I will retake in January. My weak section was verbal and I feel with enough practice I can bring this up to a better level. This gives me about 3 months to practice so I think it will be ok.
Outside of EVMS I am going to apply to University of Toledo, USF and University of Cincinnati. Should I wait until I get scores in Feb to apply to these programs as well or just EVMS?

I'd vote to wait for a 30+ before you apply, generally. Any of these programs, where there's an expectation that you'll go straight into med school, will have a high bar for acceptance.

Ok then thanks for the advice. That is what I will do.

Yep, and here's an even longer term plan for you...if you fuk up your January MCAT (I'm writing then too), then you can spend 2 months studying and write again at end of March for another chance. You should have content down, so it'll just be passage studying and looking over mistakes.

As long as your app is in on a reasonable date, quite a few programs will hold your app and wait for your MCAT.

A good friend of mine sent his app in last year to Georgetown in May and told them he was taking his MCAT in June...and they waited for the scores and gave him his acceptance at the end of July.

But that's an extreme case, I would not recommend you wait for the June MCAT :luck:

Yeah this MCAT is a retake so I have the content down. I just got unlucky with the verbal. I am going to use TPR, TBR and Kaplan for verbal and really work hard on that verbal. I will use the passage in TBR I haven't used yet to keep my science up to par. I expect my verbal to advance to a 10ish range and my PS and BS to move very little. I am putting all that I have got into this test and I am going to make it my all or none round.

Good man, be as neurotic as you can, and you'll do well.

Imo, save the TPR verbal for when you want serious studying. Don't waste it, I find it's the best out of all the prep companies.

Not with an existing low MCAT score. Desire to retake the MCAT doesn't statistically correlate with a higher score. https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/mcat/admissionsadvisors/mcat_stats/

Programs which offer very high direct MD matriculation rates (Tulane, EVMS, Cincinnati, Temple) have very high numbers of applicants, and there's no incentive to keep apps lying around. The waitlist tends to get well stocked.
A good friend of mine sent his app in last year to Georgetown in May and told them he was taking his MCAT in June...and they waited for the scores and gave him his acceptance at the end of July.
Georgetown has a very different admissions process from EVMS. They attract the most apps because they have the most famous SMP; their average GPA is higher for accepted students; they will look at a GRE score in lieu of an MCAT score. Gtown, Boston, Drexel etc. are not on the hook for "MD screening" in the SMP app process for the host med school, as are Tulane, EVMS, Cincinnati, Temple.

That said, one generality with SMPs is that after May 15 (when acceptees are not allowed to keep more than 1 MD acceptance), there is a great deal of flux as people get late MD acceptances and late SMP acceptances. An SMP waitlist can be highly volatile up until school starts. Daedalus is an anecdotal example - he got into EVMSMM only a couple of weeks before school started (he did not apply late).

Best of luck to you.

Thanks Dr.Midlife. Your hard work on this thread and many others is helping out many. Your advice is highly valued in my book. I don't plan to show my cards before I have to and if I get a chance to redeal and get a better hand I think I will hold on to my cards and wait until Feb. I will apply to all of these programs then. Currently I will study and get my LORs in order.

Just received my acceptance to EVMS Med Masters on 12/7; I think I blacked out when I saw the e-mail. Anyone else accepted yet, or in the process of applying?

Hey I am in the process of applying. Actually take the MCAT on Jan. 28th and will apply asa my scores are in. Sucks it'll be kind of late. What are your stats if you dont mind me asking?

Congratulations on your acceptance!!! EVMS is a really GREAT school🙂

Thanks. My stats are:

cGPA: 3.0
post-bacGPA: 3.8 (40 Credits)
MCAT: 31N

I still have not heard back from the other SMPs I've applied to (Gtown and UCinci), but I am leaning towards EVMS. The area is great IMO, and every time I speak with someone there I get a good feeling. However, I suppose it is best for me to do some research on the EVMS medical school considering that I might get lucky enough attend there if all goes well...

How are you (or anyone else for that matter) deciding between programs?

Well I am actually a current student in the MPH program here at EVMS, so I had the opportunity to get a feel for the atmosphere, students, and the school itself and I am in love! I feel right at home here. I do want to focus on more on research (which is what EVMS is known for) and I really like the emphasis placed on community involvement. However, I am also applying to Gtown. I am from the area, so I would love to migrate back home🙂 Gtown is also a really good school. Just have to do your research and if you can visit the campuses to get a feel of the atmosphere. Are you from the area or OOS? Also if you dont mind me asking, I see you've already completed a post-bacc program/credits, why another? Or why not just take a bunch of easy A classes to bump your cumulative gpa (sgpa is nice!) and then apply during regular cycle? You'd save on ALOT of cash! lol

EVMS is known for research within Hampton Roads, but nationwide or even on the east coast, not so much. Yes, first US test tube baby, 30 years ago. Yes, research gets done at EVMS. (Good research: fertility, neuroscience, cancer, diabetes, also translational studies, phenomenal sickle cell anemia clinical programs, etc. and as a med student you can get into a lab or trial with minimal begging.) But no, EVMS wouldn't make a top 50 list of best med schools for research, based on funding and support and name recognition and Nobel laureates and combined PhD program(s) and rate of student involvement.

Just need to point that out, so folks won't think EVMS is Duke.

That's legit.

Yes, I am out of state. As for the post-bacc, I needed to finish my pre-requisites as well as take upper-level science courses in hope raise my GPA. Unfortunately, I was slapped in the face by the almighty hand of mathematics and my cGPA wouldn't budge. So I figured around 40 credits of mostly A's would act as a nice little segue into a SMP where I could truly illustrate my capabilities. It's unfortunate that putting your life on hold for three years to work full-time, shadow, volunteer, and take courses part-time is not as impressive as someone who had their head on straight during undergraduate. But oh well, what can you do...

Essentially that is why I am going from post-bacc to post-bacc; despite my performance in those upper-level science course, whilst doing all of those other aforementioned things concurrently, it is probably still not enough for medical school adcoms. I think they like to see straight A's in a nice juicy course load rather than part-time.

Of course I could be wrong...

Yea I hear that. It is really sad, but just think about how your going to feel when you finally receive that acceptance letter! I think it will all be worth it in the end🙂 (then Im sure there will be something else to stress about.lol) How long do you have until you give EVMS your decision? Honestly I would use this time to do research on each school. Compare price, location, passing rates (board, etc), and previous matches by each school. If research is your thing, look into that. Ultimately, your trying to find the school that you wouldn't mind spending the next 5 years :\ lol It won't be an easy choice, but look at the bright side, at least you have options! haaa Look forward to seeing what you decide and hope to see you next fall!

I just received my acceptance letter and thought I was going to faint in my office! I'm applying to a few other SMPs, but would really only consider Temple ACMS or Cinci's SMP over EVMS. Most likely, I will be here Fall 2012. So so excited!! Good luck to everyone else applying 🙂.

I already put down my deposit, so I suppose I have until August to decide. The matches look pretty diverse from EVMS. So are you leaning more towards Gtown or what? I truly can't risk a gap year or I'm just going to snap, haha.

Congrats kmc! If you don't mind, why would you choose UCinci over EVMS?

I'm not sure I would choose it over EVMS, but I'm originally from Ohio so it might be nice to be closer to family. Both are awesome programs from what I've read!

I just submitted my app to this program. What were your stats if you don't mind me asking? Also, did you apply to any other SMP programs? Thanks

My stats are:

3.34 cGPA
3.22 sGPA
28Q MCAT (P: 8, V: 10, B: 10)

I'm applying to a few other programs - Cincinnati, Temple ACMS, VCU, Georgetown, NYMC, BU, Tufts, but EVMS was one of my top choices, if not my top, because of the likelihood of matriculating to EVMS and receiving in-state tuition for medical school. I'm not sure I can really justify the cost of a program like BU, Tufts, or Georgetown.

I haven't received any word from any other programs thus far.

Thanks! One more question, how long did it take you to hear back after you were complete?

I've been accepted as well, mine got in on 12/13 (was complete for roughly a week). I'm beyond excited to start! 🙂

In case anyone else is curious, According to AMCAS, my stats are:

cGPA: 3.35
BCPM: 3.25
MCAT: 33

Requisite coursework is a 3.8ish

I have 1.5 years on an ambulance (EMT), 1.5 years of research, and teach for an MCAT prep course.

Congrats, Agtongue!

Are you deciding between any other programs or are you dead-set on EVMS?

Congrats Agtongue!!

bullsfan - It took about a week for me to hear back after being complete.

Thanks congrats to you too!!!

I applied to Ucin, Gtown, and will apply to Tulane ACP (opens late Jan early February). I am set on EVMS, unless I get into Tulane, then I'll have to do some soul searching. How about you?

Good luck to everyone else applying!

Tulane ACP
You meet the requirement of being on a med school waitlist, correct? Look ahead at the requirements - no federal funding, no health insurance, etc. Tulane ACP is tricky compared to EVMS & Cincy.

I got into Tulane ACP, and would have chosen it over EVMS/Tufts (my other acceptances) or Cincy (waitlisted), but I couldn't take care of the off-the-reservation aspect. If you have parental support (for health ins, private loan cosigners) then you are better positioned.

Best of luck to you.

Hi DrMidlife, thank you for all of your help throughout this forum.

Yes I have been wait listed at Drexel.

If accepted to Tulane, I can cover the cost of tuition, but will need support for the rest. Ultimately, I just want to attend the program with the strongest linkage to its host school. EVMS and Tulane fit the bill.

So far I've only gained acceptance to EVMS, and currently awaiting UCinci and Georgetown. But if it comes down to a 3-way tie, I will probably choose between UCinci and EVMS. As much as Georgetown sounds so nice, I don't know if I want to risk having to do a gap year if I don't get in during same-year application...

I agree. Gtown has a great reputation, but I'd prefer the small class size of EVMS or UCin. For my situation, Gtown is a risk I don't care to take.

hey i am going to fill out the application over christmas break does evms accept materials from my medical school application? like for cinn/Georgetown they accepted AMCAS/my personal statement/rec letters do I have to redo them for evms application?

EVMS requires a 500 word max essay. I wrote mine specifically for the program, but you can shrink your AMCAS essay.

You can use letters directed toward med school adcoms.

Submit your AMCAS (as a PDF) and the 500 word essay. Make the 500 word essay about why you want to do EVMS. Like a secondary essay.

hmmm i didn't think to upload the amcas app haha

So I was reading the thread until I hit page 14, when I realized there was an issue with OOS. After searching through the thread and seeing the institution's switch to public rather than private, I realized that it would be incredibly difficult at this point to even get a spot as an OOS.

Is it even worth trying? I feel like the people who have gotten acceptances the past 2 years (at least) were mostly in-state.

Incorrect. About half the med masters are from out of state, on average. About a third of the M1 class is OOS, on average. I'm OOS, Daedalus is OOS, LeoMessi is OOS.

The OOS issue is tuition, if you get in and stay at EVMS. Most OOS med masters at EVMS actively apply to their home state's public schools, for cheaper tuition (and other reasons), and a handful get to go back home after finishing the SMP year.

Best of luck to you.

Yup, I am OOS and I was accepted to the Med Masters 😉

I got the email that the application package was completed. How long do they normally take to respond? Do you think it's taking them longer than a week that other people got responses in because of the holidays right now and nobody is looking over the applications until after new years?

I will provide you with my turn-around-time, but I applied early and my application was "complete" early (November 9th). I wasn't accepted until December 7th, so about a month. However, because they are reviewing now it should take a week or two, perhaps? And yes, the holidays most likely factor in to that time. 🙂

Thanks, I was getting worried because other people were saying they were hearing back very quickly. I actually had everything done and sent it before thanksgiving, but unfortunately, my school sends all of my recommendation letters all together, and that wasn't done until early december and they didn't even get it into their office for like 2 weeks after that. Just hoping I hear back soon, gotta apply to a couple other programs in the meantime I guess. Would've had this package done before december if everything got sent off on time.

Just got the acceptance email. Just waitin to hear back from Cincy to make a final decision. Don't really want to apply to Georgetown and have to wait a year after finishing the program to start med school somewhere.

Congrats!

I just got my Georgetown acceptance today, haha. I'm still waiting on UCinci; I suppose the decision making begins now...

hey guys i have asked this in RFU BMS forum. do we need separate letters for SMPs from medical school? or could we use same letters?

Same letters are fine & expected.

Has anyone heard anything back recently? Its been a few weeks since my application status was changed to complete.

Lol, I was just going to post something in the same vein.I've been complete for ~1 month and haven't heard anything. I emailed Leah Solomon a few weeks ago and she said that my application would be "reviewed this month." Hopefully we'll hear something soon :xf:

Just got my acceptance today. Does anyone know the updated stats regarding EVMS linkage/matriculation/interview for EVMS med school?

Congrats! Do you mind posting your stats and when you applied/turn around of your application? I also would like to know about the current "situation" when it comes to linkage and EVMS medical masters.

Last year's class of 23:
16 got into EVMS
2 got into UNC
1 got into George Washington
1 got into Tennessee
1 got into Tufts

I believe that's a record high, 91%.
