This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Who is going to this program for sure? I think I am pretty much set on going here. PM me if you are too.

Submitted my deposit today. Is there on-campus housing? I'm not really sure when is a good time to start looking for a place to lease late July/early August. Might be driving down there to check out the campus/neighborhood next week.

Congrats to those who have been accepted, I'm very envious right now of your opportunity. I called Leah the other day and found out I was in the middle. I feel like that doesn't leave me much hope but I can still wish for the best, going to send my final semester grades to show continued upward trend once they are available and probably check back in after May 15th.

for housing i'd start checking out craigslist and searching for the 'Ghent' area or even 'EVMS' as some listings make sure to specify proximity to the health center. I am currently in the med masters program and think I started looking around June-ish but now is also a good time to look. Places looking for tenants in july-august should start being listed now and will become more voluminous into june and july. Pembroke Towers is a pretty common apt complex for students as well as Hague Club apartments, however you need to bust a move on those now as they fill fast (I missed out last year). I actually live in a building with both the above and below units presently listed on craigslist for rent, both 3br off Graydon.

For those like me last year looking for info/evidence of success of the program, yesterday all of the IS males were accepted into the medical school. 3 others have already been accepted to their state schools/elsewhere. We are in the middle of finals presently, and all OS people are waiting to hear most likely after may 15th when people have to pick their schools so to speak. But thus far everyone is looking pretty prime for success and the fact the M1 class is increasing in size from ~120 to 140 next year helps the cause. Your MMaster class is also expanding by 4 people up to 27 from our 23 this year so next years m1/mmaster class is going to be a good bit larger than this year which is looking to be pretty well accommodated for with the brand new building.

Anyway, im super bored with studying (if it wasn't apparent by being in SDN the night before a neuro final) so hit me up with questions about whatever as last year it was my mission to know about everything so I knew what to expect when I came. Side note: do really well in your classes early on in the semester so when the final rolls around you don't have to stress like all those who did mediocre the whole time, but I only speak for myself in this regard.

congrats to those accepted, and for those waiting, keep the faith and send out good vibes- some tend to find their way back.

If anyone is looking for a place to live, I have a great condo RIGHT NEXT TO EVMS, as close as you can get besides Hague Club. It is a 2BR/1BA, hardwood floors, wired with surround sound, in-unit washer and dryer (so you dont have to pay for laundry services), and comes fully furnished at $800/mo. Utilities are included (even cable television and wireless internet). Private parking lot, but you won't need a car since it's only a 2 minute walk to EVMS.

I'm a graduating 4th year student trying to fill both bedrooms, so if you have a friend in mind as a potential roommate this would be a great place. Even if you're a singleton you're in luck; for all 5 years (med master + med school) i have only ever rented to very courteous, easy-going fellow EVMS'ers. No townies or sketchballs.

email me at [email protected] if you'd like to know more about the place or see pictures.

For those of you that are attending an SMP in the fall, are you guys applying to med schools in June? I'm not sure what to do what next year. I'm plannin on applying to SMPs in the fall 2011 then apply to medschools in 2012. Should I wait to finish the SMP (assuming I get in one) before I apply to medschools or can I apply even before starting the program? Any ideas?

accepted admission elsewhere and took my name off the waitlist, so everyone below me gets bumped up one more spot! good luck to everyone else waiting ;]

Has anyone applied to this program without taking any college calculus classes and gotten in? I've taken calc I and wasn't sure if I should take calc II this summer before applying or not. I'm set to take the MCAT on June 16th and then apply to the program in October. Thanks anyone

Updates from this year's class: at least 5 of 23 got into their state/another school and will be matriculating there. Of the remaining 18 about 11 have been accepted to EVMS with a good mix of IS and OOS. The rest I imagine are simply waiting on some fortuitous waitlist movement in the near future.

Thanks for the update! Do you mind elaborating on what kind of grades in the SMP year we need minimum to stand a good chance of getting accepted to EVMS (assuming In-state). Also, should we try to participate in extracurriculars or research during the SMP year?

So 2 more got in today? Dang, it's like watching chicks hatch, I love it.

In-state/OOS makes no difference. If you get into the med masters program, then EVMS has chosen to bet on you. You effectively have a med school seat waiting for you if you don't screw up. Screwing up means getting a C and/or [edit] doing something that makes it very difficult for EVMS to make you a med student.

That said, if you get B's, that means you have to retake everything as an M1. So get A's. Keep in mind that no matter how well you do in the med masters, you still have to do the first year of med school (minus classes you honor or high pass as a med masters).

More specifically on getting in, if you're doing well in classes then you get on the waitlist. There are 4 waitlists that run in parallel: IS female/male, OOS female/male. In general there's never been a case where somebody got on the waitlist and didn't get in. OOS waitlists move faster than IS, particularly after May 15 when nationwide acceptees have to give up all but one seat.
Also, should we try to participate in extracurriculars or research during the SMP year?
You're expected/required to participate in community events like the free clinic and Haunted Hallway etc. EVMS is all about community events. There's no shortage of opportunities. Start early.

There are plenty of opportunities to do research, but you don't want to take this on in lieu of doing well in classes. I would not have been able to keep up 2nd semester if I had research obligations in addition to classes & the 30 page paper. For me it'll be more reasonable to be in a lab during M1.

Best of luck to you.

I was looking at CL for housing and Lafayette towers is listed 1 million times. It looks like that its across town from campus and a definite drive. Are there any strong feelings, for or against, living there? (Besides not being able to walk to campus)

If you have a dog, if driving in traffic both ways to school sometimes blocked by a train crossing doesn't bother you, and if it won't bother you to have to keep track of how high the river level is vs. where your car is parked, then LT is fine.

If you want to be close to school, then focus on Ghent or maybe Freemason.

On Google Maps, find EVMS/Sentara. To the east you'll see the Chrysler Museum & Llewellyn - that's the east boundary of Ghent. To the southeast you'll see a triangle bounded by Boush, Brambleton & the Elizabeth River - that's Freemason. To the west, bounded by Redgate & the train tracks, is West Ghent. The north boundary of Ghent is around 21st, but I suggest you'll want to avoid the high school area. When I'm looking, I search either on "ghent" or on "freemason" and about 25% of hits are relevant.

There are a HUGE number of old, charming properties with various levels of amenities & in various states of repair. It's a fair bet that you'll find something liveable if you visit for a couple days in mid-July.

Hague Towers, Pembroke Towers, Hague Club and student housing (wait lists at student housing & the towers) are sort of the default places people live. A lot of folks rent condos at Westover.

Assume you need to sign a 12 month lease and that you'll thus be on the hook after school is out. COA for the med masters is 10 months, so plan ahead.

Best of luck to you.

Great that helps alot. Its hard to take all those factors into account when you're just looking at a map. "hmmm, It looks like LT towers is only an inch away from campus... sign me up"

fyi, the just-finished med masters class got maybe a half dozen emails from Leah during spring semester, each time with the email address of an incoming med masters student who wanted advice or support or a tour or whatever. Don't hesitate to let Leah know you want your email address forwarded like this. At this time of year (post-graduation) it's a bit more difficult to find people in Norfolk, but I think you'll get access to people who can help you figure out details. btw I'm the only one who is painfully opinionated and elderly and can talk for 2 hours about how to tie your shoes - everybody else is pretty normal.

Question about leasing-- Many condo owners on craigslist want a deposit (plus application fee) to secure an apartment, but considering most of us are not anywhere near Norfolk until August, is it safe to just send over a deposit check for >$1000 to a stranger. Is there a better (less risky) way to lease? Sorry for my ignorance if this is a silly question- I've never rented before so I'm kind of new to this.😕

I did this...after I'd spent some time in Norfolk and had a Norfolk buddy do a video walkthrough of the unit.

If you haven't seen the place, if you haven't been in it, if you don't have people who can check it out for you, then put the checkbook down. Two words: latent odor.

Can you do a housing-hunting trip to Norfolk? Maybe a couple days in mid-July?

Do MMs put their anticipated classes into their AMCAS application? If so, Is there a special way we should report our classes in the AMCAS ap?

The class list is here: http://www.evms.edu/evms-school-of-health-professions/ms-in-biomedical-sciences-medical-masters.html

In AMCAS, you want to make sure you mark your EVMS coursework as "future" or "in progress", and your EVMS transcript as "not required". So you have to set a designation on the transcript and on each course. That keeps AMCAS completely out of any updates that happen during the year, such as any change in curriculum or grade reporting. Which is good.

Best of luck to you.

Hey everyone, this is a awesome thread!

Just a quick question. Would applying and being complete by around late Feb to early March be way too late to apply for the program? Will I be automatically waitlisted if good enough at this time and if so, will there be enough movement for an acceptance? Thanks!

Apply as early as you can. There's no way to predict how you'll rank among other applicants, and no way to predict what the waitlist will do. (You should probably apply to 5+ SMPs.)

Assuming the delay is for an MCAT score, just line everything up so that your app is complete and submitted immediately after you get your score. Don't mess around with half-applying early, just get everything submitted together.

Best of luck to you.

Thank you DrMidlife! One more question, I've read on this forum about the Med Masters program and its awesome linkage to EVMS. But I also heard that its not as well known as other SMP and is not great for other schools. I find that really hard to believe though, considering your taking like 5 M1 classes and it basically tests your readiness for med school.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but why wouldn't you want med schools to be updated with your grades? Just in case you don't do well?

You don't want AMCAS to own those updates. Or there would be another 6-8 week transcript verification to wait out, while all the med school seats go to the other kids.

What EVMS does, which is pretty good, is:
1. You get an initial letter from the med masters director that explains the program and what med schools can expect during the year. It's up to you to distribute this to schools via Interfolio or AMCAS or whatnot.
2. You get a second letter when first semester grades come out, as a progress report, and it also includes any school activities or new ECs. Distributed as above.
3. You have to order transcripts to be sent to your schools, separately (and be proactive and polite about it).

You can also send your own update letter if you have anything of value to share. Don't send fan mail.

The critical factor with a same-year-as-SMP med school app is that if you really need that SMP asset to get into med school, then your app is going to land in a hold pile at med schools. Which is pure limbo. You have to fight your way out of that hold pile into the interview pile.

Best of luck to you.

Hi,
I know the minimum GPA for this program is 2.75, but does anyone know the average GPA and MCAT of students accepted to this program? Thanks!😀

I don't think anybody knows. Based on hearsay from the last two classes, I'd guess it's probably about 3.2 or 3.3, probably 29 or 30 MCAT.

Definitely don't be thinking that the 2.75 happens a lot. Out of the last 45 med masters, there's only one I know of that was sub-3.0. That one was instate, and had a 30+ MCAT.

Best of luck to you.

Does anyone know if there has been any movement on the waitlist front? Just curious as to what time frame in the past they let waitlist people know since it's already July pretty much (let's say top 1/3 of the waitlist group). Do they wait all the way until August or past to let them know? Thanks!

Thank you DrMidlife for all the information you have been giving us. I have follow questions about reporting classes on AMCAS. 1. Which classes are combined lecture and lab? 2. Should I list spring semester classes as well even though grades would not be expected until after the current application cycle?

Histology and Neuroscience are lecture+lab. The rest are labless.

Listing spring classes isn't for AMCAS, it's for the schools you're applying to. Think of yourself as a junior in college listing the classes you'll take as a senior. If you want med schools to appreciate that you're doing an SMP, then you have to indicate in every possible way that you're doing an SMP.

Best of luck to you.

Just got a call today from Leah...I'm accepted!!! Ahhhh, i'm so stoked! =D

That definitely wasn't true my year (I haven't been on this thread recently, but I was a med master 3 years ago and am now an M3 at EVMS) and hasn't been in the years since. There have been lots of people in each class to get into various other schools - off the top of my head: VCU, OHSU, USUHS, UMDNJ, ECU, UCI, LECOM, and various others I can't remember right now.
But it is true the linkage to EVMS is fantastic as long as you do well in your classes (i.e. no C's)

Congrats to everyone who was accepted and will be attending this year! You'll all see me at orientation - I'll be giving a presentation with one of the deans this year. I'm also happy to answer questions about anything EVMS-related (along with DrMidlife, who is an excellent resource!), so feel free to PM me or reply on this thread (although i don't check all that often anymore)

Hey Guys,

I am too applying to the program for Fall 2012. I am planning to take the mcat the end of January due to time constraints. Hope this is not too late🙁 I am currently a student here at EVMS in the MPH program, so I would definitely love to stay here! Having some trouble on how I should approach studying for the mcat. Have berkeley review and EK, but I feel like I am focusing on too much detail and I find myself taking pages of notes for just one section. Any thoughts?

I have great LORs, tons of clinical experience, and research. Currently have a 3.97 (MPH), undergrad 2.9 cgpa and 2.77 sgpa, just need to do well on the mcat. Scared I'm starting too early since the test isnt for another 5 months. Just looking forsome advice? Thanks!

There's an MCAT forum here that has everything you could want and tons you don't. I suggest that you should look into a formal prep course. I suggest that you should plan to take every single AAMC practice test, and that if you can't beat your goal on the practice tests, then you're not ready to take the MCAT.
I have great LORs, tons of clinical experience, and research. Currently have a 3.97 (MPH), undergrad 2.9 cgpa and 2.6 sgpa, just need to do well on the mcat. Scared I'm starting too early since the test isnt for another 5 months. Just looking forsome advice? Thanks!
Please understand that your MPH performance doesn't address the issues raised by a well-below-3.0 science GPA in undergrad. MPH work is plenty hard, but it's apples & oranges compared to the quantity and quality of the workload in med school. Undergrad science coursework is more predictive (as is the MCAT verbal section). You may find that a 2.6 in undergrad science is what keeps you out of the med masters. In your shoes I would be finding somewhere to take more undergrad science and get as many A's as you can, until you get into an SMP.

If you're able to get a substantially above average MCAT, where average is 32, then you may have some leverage from being a "known quantity" (a current EVMS student). I strongly recommend against trying to get into EVMS med masters with a below average MCAT in addition to a below-3.0 GPA. There will be about 500 applicants for about 28 seats, so you need to be competitive. I hope that if med school is your dream, that you're willing to take more time to improve the competitiveness of your app, if that's what's required.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks for your reply and I appreciate all of your advice! I know my numbers arent stellar, but I lost my mom the summer before freshman year of college and then lost my dad my junior year. From this, my grades flucuated a lot! (Im sure you understand) However, regardless of everything, I also know how much the mcat is going to weigh in the admissions committees decision, which is why Im starting this journey early! I really want to stay here, its a great institution, and I love it!

will having multiple class repeats hinder your chances? even if the GPA is around 3.02?

will having multiple class repeats hinder your chances? even if the GPA is around 3.02?
I suggest using the AMCAS style of GPA calcs, in applying to the EVMS med masters program. That means that a repeat doesn't wipe out a previous grade. DO calcs are different.

If your repeats are in the prereqs, the problem is that it shows you need multiple attempts to get through the coursework most relevant to med school. What that looks like to med schools is that you're a remediation risk. But in general people are trying to get into SMPs because they don't have stellar transcripts, and repeats are typical of that.

The more evidence you can accumulate that you'll thrive and succeed under a crushing massive load of dense new coursework with constant unrelenting hours-long multiple choice exams, the more likely you are to get into a good SMP (and into med school). There's nothing more depressing to the EVMS med masters faculty than to have med masters not succeed and go straight into med school - and admissions decisions weigh this risk heavily.

Best of luck to you.

Does anyone know if my application will get pushed back if I submit post grad grades after this fall semester? I have a 2.98 cumGPA, my last two years of school was 3.61 in upper level BIO. But i wanted to strengthen my gpa a bit by taking come post bacc undergrad classes this fall.

You can either submit your med masters app early and then send an update when you have your fall grades, or you can wait to apply until you have your fall grades. Either is fine, because you've got a relevant upward trend, and January is still fairly early in the process. Either way, make sure to mention any coursework in progress.

Equally important, make sure you have a good MCAT score in hand when you apply.

Best of luck to you.

quick question: is it better to take a bunch of upper level science courses, 19 credits, at once or to take some hard classes and a few lower level classes, astronomy 101... etc?

It's best to get straight A's. If you can get straight A's in a bunch of upper div science, that's more interesting than a mix. Nothing wrong with a mix.

I am planing on applying here in December. My current stats are cGPA 3.2 and BCMP GPA of 3.13 and an MCAT of 26 M VR 7 PS 9 BS 10. I plan to retake the MCAT in April after proper test prep. I feel I should be able to pull a 30 in April.( I had practice test scores averaging around 32)
Lots of good EC and great LORs.
What are my chances of getting into the EVMS Med Masters program? Should I apply in December or should I wait until the MCAT score comes in April?

If you take the MCAT in March, you'll have a score in April, which is late. An April MCAT score comes out in May, and that's too late. If you could get a 30 in January, do it.

Otherwise go ahead and apply early, and tell a story that is as compelling as possible. Make sure to emphasize that you understand the importance of a 30+ score and that you're doing everything you can to ensure getting such. And when you get that 30+, resubmit everything from your first app, and add a new letter beseeching the admissions folks to reconsider you.

28 seats, 500+ apps, so don't put all your eggs in this basket.

Best of luck to you.
