😀 thanks for the detailed reply!

i've got another question: how important is the science gpa for the md program at evms after completing the smp? i was rejected from the md program this year because my bcpm was below 3.0 (i called and asked), so i'm a little worried if this will matter even if i do the smp. thanks.

You had a very similar MCAT to a friend of mine at WVSOM. Lewisburg is an awesome place, I just visited it. The people there are also extremely sociable. If I didn't love EVMS so much, and the tuition wasn't like 70k/year out of state, I'd definitely consider it.

I'm not on the admissions committee so I can't give you a factual answer. However, I do feel reasonably certain that it won't matter, simply based on the purpose of the program. This program is for you to show yourself and how hard you can work to polish up discrepencies in your resume. By being here its understood that you're expected to work on some things (like your grades). You take classes with the medical students and you are expected to get high pass/honors in your classes. I mean, its kind of a common sense thing. If you don't do stellar in the MM program then they're going to see that and look at your college grades and they may be weighted equally. If you get in here and kick ass and honors all your classes (which puts in you in the top 10% of the M1's), then you're a shoe-in and they won't care what your undergrad was because you just showed you can get better grades than the majority of the M1's here.

thanks again 🙂 here's hoping i get in.

chowchilla - it's still early. best of luck to you. maybe we'll be classmates at evms 🙂.

phishfood - thanks for such a helpful and detailed reply. if you don't mind my asking, since your stats were similar to mine, how did you choose which med schools to apply to. i know it is a numbers game, but since my numbers don't really match anywhere, i'm kind of at a lost as to where to apply. also, how are you doing in the application process? any interviews/acceptances?

I wouldn't be much help here. Because EVMS is my top choice school I didn't apply to a bunch of schools. I applied to in-state schools and a couple osteopathic schools. Of course, applying to in-state schools for you is going to be pretty difficult. You should apply to schools you have connections to or have a specific interest in and a few osteopathic schools. I dont want to say you shouldn't just throw out applications everywhere you can, because it certainly has worked for people, but looking at your numbers, unless you've got some sort of extracurricular ace up your sleeve, I'm sorry. I really don't want to sound discouraging, but since you asked I'll assume you want brutal honesty. I was coming from a prominent state school, with some research work and shadowing experience at the med school I wanted, and I still got waitlisted b/c of my numbers. Incidentally, your at-the-cusp-of-competitive numbers make you an ideal candidate for this program.

Now, as far as how those numbers translate into future competitiveness after this program entirely depends on what you do in this program. As I said before, most med masters stay here at EVMS and are very successful students. For those who are accepted to other schools, I don't know anything about what they did in undergrad or otherwise that got them in. I dont know if they had awesome GPA's or MCAT's or if they had some awesome research publication or were dedicated to teaching blind impoverished children in the Sahara Desert or they got lucky or what.

Obviously, I am not the final word on how competitive you are. But if you're a run-of-the-mill student with run-of-the-mill numbers, my best guess at what you should be trying to do is as above: get in here, work your butt off, and get honors in your courses so you dont have to take them next year. Matriculate into EVMS, use your free time to head a club, do research, tutor, get honors in the few classes you do have, and study for the USMLE. With your new amazing honors in 5 classes, an extra year of USMLE practice, good research experience and leadership positions, go ace the USMLE and get into a residency of choice. The ability to pass out of classes that EVMS offers gives a really great opportunity for med masters to become some of the most competitive students.

Listen to Phish... As another current Med Master, I can say that I completely agree with everything he has said on this post recently. Keep the questions rollin I'd love to help field some.

Hi, thanks for the info, it really helps. EVMS has been my top choice SMP for a while now, i didn't realize they were going to review applications so soon. Congratulations on the acceptance btw. I won't be able to turn in my application until the middle of march because i'm waiting on some letters of rec to come in. Since they've already started accepting people and the class size is so small i'm kind of worried. Any insight as to when the majority of acceptances were sent out last year and when the class may have filled up?

No idea, but I sent mine in mid-march, and I know some others sent their's in quite near the deadline. If you have some sort of specific interest in the EVMS med master program you should contact Dr. Meyer. A little personal contact can't hurt. Below is the link to the program page, and note the FAQ in the toolbar to the right.

Hi christofurr! I've been meaning to message you about what csueb classes to take for next qtr since you said you are taking classes there too. i read in another evms thread that turnover is pretty high, despite the small class size...i.e. people that are 30-40 on the waitlist have gotten in since a lot of people pull out because they got med school acceptances... I have no idea if the class has filled up, but I would definitely call Nicole Priest. Her number is on the evms website. She might be able to give you that information. With that said, I think you should definitely submit your application now, and have your letter writers send in their letters directly to the school. That way, if some letters are done, they can be sent in...as opposed to waiting until all of them are done to send out the entire application. I don't know...maybe it's the same result, but at least if you send your application now, they'll have record of it. And you can get your transcripts and test scores in order in the meantime while you wait for letters to come in.

thanks for all the advice. i am currently doing some postbac work, so i hope to improve my gpa between now and summertime. i'm going to talk to some advisors about applying, but i will definitely apply to evms and my undergraduate college since i have strong ties there (student-run clinic and personalized internship with a dr./med school professor there).

I e-mailed Dr. Meyer about a week ago, and still no response. Does he usually take this long to respond to an e-mail, or should I try to contact him again? or some one else?
He's is kind of flakey, you should go ahead and hit him again. If you used the medmaster@something email address, you could try to snag him at [email protected]

You can also try to get in touch with Nicole Priest. Call her and she's pretty good about returning phone calls. An all around very pleasant person.

I also attempted to contact Dr. Meyer via email to learn more about the med masters program and was never given a response. It's been 3-4 months without response, so if you want to get some information he's not the one to go to!👎

I would call Nicole Priest, the administrator. When I called, she picked up...and she's been good with email replies in the past although there is some delay. Also, when I was accepted, I was told that she was the one to call if I had any questions so I'm sure she would be able to answer any of yours. 757-446-8480

Sup possible future Med masters people. I used to be in the med masters this year, but I got into GW early and quit the program. The progams okay, where are you guys from? Norfolk sucks though. The program is fantastic if you want to go to EVMS (or in my case back thendon't care where you go). I actually chose the EVMS program over Gtown's just becuase of that. I could be wrong but I think Gtown's acceptance rate is 40% after 1 year and 60/80% after 2 years. It's not bad, but EVMS last year was over 90%, in that 1 person who finished the program didn't get in (1 person didnt finish the program). 2 People last year out of the 20 got into different schools other than EVMS (Tulane and Alabama). Both decided to stay in Norfolk. The program is simple, study hard and get into evms. Goodluck to all you guys next year and my fellow ex-med masters this year 😀

wait, so are you saying that the only person who didn't get in last year was the one who didn't finish the program? or, was there one person who finished the program, and didn't get in last year? if that's the case, was it because their marks were too low?

Yeah, one person didnt get in last year that finished the program. and yes, her grades were too low. I dont know exactly what they were.

So your acceptance into GW wasn't contingent upon finishing the EVMS program? And did you get part of your tuition back?

Just curious. I was under the impression that you were pretty much bound to finish the program once you started it.

Yes DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM was lucky enough to get accepted to GW's program extremely early. He was able to get most of his tuition back. While we all love DOOM and think he's a great guy, don't bank on being able to get in to another program before you finish. He is one of the few, and I'm very proud that it worked out for him in that way, but it doesn't happen for the vast majority of the Med Masters. Additionally, most people find out acceptances to other schools later in the year after they have been in the program for a while, at this point in time, the reimbursment for tuition would be minimal so you have to weigh the loss of money to finishing the program and getting the Master's degree. Again, Congrats DOOM we miss you in class good buddy 🙁

Additionally, You aren't "bound" to finish any program you get in to. If you want to quit, you quit; the repercussions are yours to weigh.

From the program's point of view, yeah I understand that. But I thought medical schools required you to finish your masters degree before matriculating. But maybe that's only a few schools? Just curious. I don't expect that to happen (if I get into med school anywhere I will be ecstatic but surprised).

Good to hear from you PackLax!! I hope all your exams and stuff are going well!! Yeah, I got the majority of my tuition back. At first GW had accepted me contingent on me finishing the program, but i spoke to the dean and got them to wave that, considering I had been doing well and it was so early on in the program.

What is Norfolk like, and what are some of the good apartments around there? (I'm from California). To the current and past med masters students, did the majority of you apply to med school during your smp year?

Norfolk is fine, I'm not the type of person to "enjoy the night life" that much, but from my friends that do, I understand that its not great, and it's not terrible. As far as apartments, it really depends on what your needs are. I, for example, needed a place that would accept large dogs, so I had to live a little bit away from campus. If you don't have a car, your options will be limited by how far you want to walk (all obvious stuff I know but just have to put it out there), but if you are a single person with no problems living in an apartment with a couple of people, I would suggest driving around the Ghent area and calling the numbers on the many for rent signs. The costs for rent around here can be a little steep, but coming from California, it shouldn’t be too much of a shock for you.
As far as your application to med school, you definitely need to have an application going while you are in the program, or else there is no way you can have no gap year. EVMS isn't going to accept you just on the basis of your successful completion of the Med Masters program, you have to put in an application and do a secondary, and interview just like all the other applicants. Its great fun, applying to, and basically attending med school at the same time.
Congratulations to all who have gotten in to the Med Masters program, and good luck to all those still applying/ waiting. I’m here to answer any questions I can.

Yeah, the prices I see off of Norfolk's Craiglist don't seem too bad at all haha... Most likely I won't have a car. I don't have any pets, but I would like to have my own room in an apartment/house that has other occupants. Nicole Priest suggested looking in the West Ghent and Ghent area. Thanks Packlax.

I got back to my apartment after the bball game and i discovered that Fedex tried to deliver a "Priority Mail" package to me... turns out it was from EVMS.. Is this an acceptance letter?

I got my EVMS med master's acceptance letter in a fed ex envelope, so it could be 🙂. Hello possible classmate!

Grats on your acceptances everyone. Im going to apply this week. Did you use a typewriter for the application or did you find a fillable PDF? Thanks!

Also, this program seems really great.

If you get the real version of Adobe Acrobat, not the reader, there is a "Type Writer" feature that enables you to fill out the application... thats what I did...

Ilovescience... I sure hope it is an acceptance letter. I think the Fedex people said it was addressed from EVMS- Office of Research or something random like that...

I printed out the pdf application, and filled it out with black ink. I'm not very high tech 🙂. You can get the application here:

Thanks everyone. Now to find someone with the full version of Adobe. I hate typewriters and I have horrible handwriting.

Good luck on that acceptance letter :luck:

I received a Fedex package from EVMS a few days ago as well and it was an acceptance letter. I seriously doubt they would send a rejection letter by express mail, unless they like wasting money.

I was hoping other Med Masters could give some insight on trying to obtain Virginia residency. I'm just wondering if it is a difficult process or not?

Just got my acceptance to EVMS... I am also wondering about the residency requirements for Virginia. Anyone have any idea on what to do and how long it takes? I plan on putting in my deposit unless some other school gets to me within 10 days... The non-resident tuition is a bit pricy for the EVMS MD program and one has to take into serious consideration that attending EVMS for their MD after the MA is a likely possibility.

i too would like to know more. after spending a year in virginia doing the smp, does one qualify for virginia residency? and if so, does that mean that smp graduates pay in-state tuition for the md program?

To obtain VA residency, you must have lived in the state for at least 12 consecutive months. For regards to MD programs, generally they will allow you to count future residency as part of the 12 months: if classes begin on Aug 12th but naturally you're applying far before then you are allowed to claim residency. You must have proof of residency, however, including (but not limited to) paying state taxes, holding a VA driver's license, being a registered voter, and state car registration.

Hope that helps!

So if I were to move down to Virginia in May of this year and take the steps necessary to become a Virginia resident, I can submit my AMCAS this year and claim to be a Virginia resident on AMCAS? I just want to make sure that med schools would view me as a Virginia resident, because it would suck otherwise if I claim to be a Virginia resident on AMCAS and then not be able to receive that status.

by claiming VA residency, this will make you a more desired EVMS med school applicant since they prefer their own residents yet now you will be considered an out-of-state applicant to the other med schools you apply to (including schools in the state you resided in before starting as a med masters student)?

congrats to those who got in so far. i'm applying right now and hopefully i'll be able to join you all. I had a quick question about the essay....did you submit your personal statement from medical schools or did you write another completely different essay? i was thinking about submitting my personal statement and then adding a paragraph or two explaining why i want to go to the evms (im still thinking of how i can say simply because i want to get into med school in two paragraphs). thanks for your help!

i am still working on my amcas personal statement...i had a general personal statement about why i wanted to go to med school and then focused my conclusion on why i haven't applied to med school yet and why i want to do a master's program first...and reasons why i would like to go to evms in particular for the smp 🙂

congrats to everyone who has gotten in! blindkutha - yay for CA ppl migrating to VA...where are you from Dr. Brown?

Ok so I might have a unique perspective on the subject of residency. As a current out of state Med Master, I can tell you that it is almost impossible to gain in-state residency if you are coming to this program. One of the criteria for the in state residency is that you must not have moved to the state for educational purposes. So, moving to VA for school, which you are doing, and which they will easily see, you will not be able to get in state residency. I know it sucks, but trust me I have been trying to do this for almost a year now and it doesn't look like it's going to work (and I lived in the state for 8 years before moving to NC for High School, so I even have some residency ties here). Not to bust anyone's bubble, I just want to impress on everyone that it is extremely difficult to do. They absolutely look at residency very seriously and the application for in state residency is extensive. I moved here shortly before school, got a license, registered to vote, have a townhouse in my name and so on and so on.... still no.

oh additionally, i filled out my AMCAS as a "VA resident" and it still distinguished me as a NC resident.... I don't know how, it's AMCAS, it's smart.

I'm with Pack... I even went to undergrad in VA (From NY) I wen to VCU. I tried to hard to get instate.... realestate, voting (for 3 years), started a corporation (That did nothing) to give myself W2's to show income, registration, all that good stuff... and a BIG NEGATIVE... because of that stupid clause which states that you cannot be considered a resident if they feel that you came to the state of VA for education, which meant (to VCU) that since I came to Richmond in 2002 and started college in 2002, for the rest of my life I cannot be considered a resident. Unbelievable.

Thanks Packlax and Doooooom for your input on the residency issue. After doing some research about the topic, seems the only way to become a Virginia resident for tuition purposes is to marry a Virginia resident. And even then it won't be a guarantee. But if any future OOS Med Masters have a significant other in Virginia, a trip to Vegas soon might be a good idea.

Please read the above posts for almost everything you asked has already been talked about up there. If you have any additional questions concerning those areas PM me.

very appropriate that your name is blind kutha.... haha you'll fit in just fine.

So I am going to send im my application this week hopefully, I have been bogged down by the PS for the past week.

Can I just use my AMCAS PS and revise it to how I think the MM will help me transition into medical school? My AMCAS is about my passion for communication in health care....I was thinking of making my conclusion about how I need the stepping stone for medical school and so forth...thanks!

I think for the majority of the essay your AMCAS PS would be fine to use. However, for your conclusion I'd recommend focusing on why you want to go to EVMS in particular. Look at their mission statement for what they look for in potential candidates.

Another question for current MM's, are there any Wawa's located near the campus?

It's what I did.

Unfortunately, no. There's a starbucks down the street.
