I don't remember seeing a Wawa, but in regards to the Amcas PS.... I sent in my app the day before the last day you could hand it in (overnight) and I copied and pasted my amcas essay (I didnt even read the essay question)... I was pretty hell bent on going to gtown's program, but I figured give myself some options and apply to EVMS.... after finding out more about the program I decided to go there... but my point is, dont worry about the essay so much as just get your app in.

No. The closest Wa that I know of is in Newport News. But I do feel your pain. Few things can trump the Wa-squared.

Hey, a quick question to other applicants...

Today I recieved an e-mail from EVMS stating the following:

"Dear Dr__Robert,


Thank you for submitting an application for admission to the Master of Biomedical Sciences Program at Eastern Virginia Medical School. We have established an admissions file for you and will notify you when that file is complete..."

Does this mean that my application is somehow not complete? or that they simply have not compiled everything yet? or that my application is now under review?

Should I just call the number and ask somebody what the deal is there?

I would call for clarification, I do remember getting that message, but I don't remember what it means. Call Nicole Priest, she should be able to let u know. Good luck!

I just called Ms. Rose Mwayungu and she let me know that my application was complete, and that I should hear something soon... :scared:... I REALLY want to go to EVMS, I hope it all works out.

PS - As another question to those who have been accepted... about how long after having a complete application for review did you receive your acceptance?!
 
Dr_Robert - Glad you got your admission status cleared up, but for future questions about it, I think the email you got was to let you know that they are putting you into their database of applicants or something like that ? I didn't get that email. Instead, I got an email saying that they needed my MCAT scores to complete my file...so that's my basis for the reasoning.

It took around 2 weeks for notification of my acceptance as well.
 
does anyone know what month the program starts? also, in the "academic record" section, we are supposed to list our bio/chem/physics courses with our grades but since they are a year long do you average the two semester's grades together or do you put both (i.e. A/B) and also do we use letter grades or number grades?.....plus, my undergrad. utilized the plus/minus system so how would i go about averaging that? hehe sorry one last thing.....so since my school used the +/- scale and amcas doesn't.....should i put my overall undergraduate gpa that appears on my transcript or the one calculated on my amcas application~ any help would be greatly appreciated....thanks alot in advance! 🙂
p.s. our recommenders send the letters directly to the school right? or do we send it together with our application?

for the science courses, i put the two grades separately (i didn't average organic chem 1 and 2, for example). my school also used the plus and minus system, so i put it down exactly as they listed it. i put down my cgpa as listed on my transcript, especially as it's changed since i last used amcas. also, because the master's application process has nothing to do with amcas, it shouldn't be a problem. and finally, i sent my letters via interfolio, but i'd say it would be a better idea to send them separately directly to the school (confidentiality and all that). to be safe, just call them and make sure.
 
Hi, am thinking of applying to EVMS smp...one question i have is for your GPA do they calculate it like AMCAS or AACOMAS, or is it just the Undergrad GPA from your Institution that they look at? i have a 27 MCAT...and if 90% of students get into EVMS after one year...this is a good backdoor into medical school, provided i can get into it.
 
Um...I don't know...I just put my undergrad GPA as stated on my transcript, but I think my AMCAS gpa is the same or really close to the same value.

princessbbn- I think either way you send your letters of rec is fine, but if you send it with your application, they should be in sealed envelopes with the letter writer's signature across the seal to ensure confidentiality.
 
The program starts in Aug (started Aug 14 this past year). I had my LOR sent from the people who wrote them.
 
I received a Fed-Ex overnight this morning!!! I got accepted into the EVMS Med Masters program!! I'm totally excited!👍 😍

thanx all of you guys for your help~ i jus had one more question.....would it be sufficient for my recommenders to send the same letter they wrote for my medical application or would they need to write a separate personal letter specifically for this program.....i just don't have the luxury of giving them another 2-3 weeks to write a whole new letter and i already feel as though my application is so late......any of your opinions would be greatly appreciated~ thanx!

p.s. congratulations dr. robert! would you mind me asking what your stats were? 🙂

I would definitely have your recommenders write new letters... and HOUND the hell out of them until they are sent in too.

My stats:
MCAT: 29P - 10B, 9V, 10P
GPA: 3.45
Sci GPA: ~3.25
Two years research in pharmaceutics, two publications
Some minor shadowing experience
Some volunteering for the university

princessbbn - I had my letter writers write new letters as well, and I provided them with information about the school and why I wanted to go. I'm sure they can just tweak the letters they wrote for med school a little bit so that it works better for the smp. Good luck. 🙂

The only thing I want to add to this topic is that if you applied to EVMS already, you can just have your file transferred and no new LOR's need to be written. I was waitlisted and simply had them move my file with LOR's for consideration in the Med Master applicant pool. I didn't have to hound anyone again for a new LOR
 
hey guys, i'm filling out my application and had a few questions about it:

under the coursework section where it says biology with laboratory....does it matter what course we put there? i didn't do so well in the lower division bio classes but did pretty well in some of the upper divisions...should i just list two of those classes? i was a bio major and have tons of bio classes.

also, how did you send out your mcat score to them? i didn't find their program under aamc's list.

I'm not too sure about the bio w/lab courses, but I would imagine that the ones that fulfill medical school requirements are the ones they want as well. I would list all of them, but you can contact someone from the school to make sure. At any rate, they will see all your bio grades in your transcript, whether or not you put all of them. I was a bio major as well.

I printed out a score report and faxed it to them when they asked for it. I thought the school was included in the medical schools your mcat score is automatically sent to, but apparently not. I would call to make sure of that too, instead of waiting for them to request it like I did.
 
I remember printing out my THx report and sending it with my application if that helps anybody. Congrats Dr. Bob.

They didnt send me anything (not even an email) except the acceptance package...

UC Berkeley (Graduating May 2007), MCB Major, 2.90 Undergrad, 2.68 BCPM, all double digits on my MCAT, a ton of extra curriculars including published/research at UCSF, run a free medical clinic, elected student government positions, elected city government positions, Fraternity (IHSV), damn good rec letters, a ton of other stuff..

I put new meaning to the term sophomore slump..

I applied to a lot of programs. I'm just waiting to hear back now...
Boston University (Dont really care for)
Drexel University IMS (Dont really care for now, their staff is really incompetent and annoying)
East Virginia Medical School (Accepted, Top 3 choice)
Georgetown University (Top 3 choice)
Loyola University (Rejected... They should be so lucky)
Rosalind Franklin University (Dont know much about this program and have not heard a thing from them)
University of Cincinnati (Top 3 choice)
UMDNJ (Dont know much about this program)

As of right now, I'm headed to EVMS. If i get accepted into the other top 3 programs, i'll decide where I'll go during the summer when I visit all the schools i'm considering...

Cost of living seems very very low in Norfolk. I'm going to live like a king out there. However, i'm concerned about the prospect of living in Norfolk for 5 years. I'm pretty sure i'm going to hate the city but i really want to be a doctor. I was looking over the previous posts and people say that they decline interviews at other med schools... That seems a bit crazy since people in the program find out if they get admitted/rejected to EVMS Med School the day after graduation in May. I cant imagine anyone getting any interviews after they find out in May so can someone clarify this? I'm definitely not one to keep all my eggs in one basket and I will apply very broadly (25-30 schools).

As far as the application, I wrote a separate essay on why i want to go EVMS. I also submitted a copy of my AMCAS inlcuding my PS, brief description of my research activities, and my MCAT ThX. It was a very thick envelope. I used the same rec letters I had on file with the lettter service which were designed and written for medical school. I did not submit a copy of my HS transcript...

You should use an online letter service to manage your rec letters. How it works is your prof sends the letter and grid sheet to the agency and they maintain the "confidentiality" aspect and keep it on file. Whenever you need your letters sent out, they make copies and send them out... no talking with your professors and bothering them with stuff they dont really care about.

I have not known anybody to turn down interviews before they are accepted somewhere. I do know that some people are accepted elsewhere, and decide after knowing their EVMS status to continue at EVMS. If you want to live somewhere other than Norfolk, and don't care to go to EVMS, you might want to go to Georgetown's program. Please see my post on this subject earlier on this discussion board (I think its on page five, maybe six)

Not trying to be disheartening or dissuade you, but your BCPM and your GPA is really really low. I agree with PaxLax. If you want to apply to other schools, I would really recommend Gtown or perhaps even BU. One thing about this program is that if you want to get to EVMS, you should defiintely go to this program. I have a 3.45, 3.3 BCPM, 29R, and i got 2 other interview barely. Several people have gotten ONE interview somewhere else, and one person has gotten interviews everywhere (however, this person stats are VERY good so this isnt suprising). The EVMS program isn't nearly as well known as BU or Gtown; its only meant for people to goto EVMS. In fact, I remember Dr. Meyer specifically saying that people dont get into other med schools. I think the #1 reason why this happens is b/c people's GPA's are so low that sometimes they are beyond saving, yet EVMS gives them a chance. I mean if you apply to other schools, you are going to be applying to the schools with the lowest average stats (drexel, NYMC, etc..). I'm assuming your MCAT is a 33 (your double digit clue) which is an awesome MCAT, but offsetting a 2.9, I dont know, thats kind of a stretch.

It really all depends on what you want to do. If you want to go to medical school period, then you should apply to this program. If Georgetown accepts you, then they think that you have a good shot getting into other medical schools. The reason why I picked this over Georgetown and BU is mainly b/c of the acceptance rate and the no lag year. Yeah I probably would have done well at Georgetown, but I dont know if i woudl ahve gotten in during that year; I didnt want to waste ANOTHER YEAR.

As for the city, i mean its clearly not a big city. I went to richmond and its pretty much the same. They have a very small downtown area with a big mall in the middle. If you have a good group of friends, then you will be fine (as it is wherever u move). EVMS is a str8 medical school. Yeah its not super well known, but the faculty is pretty nice, and i feel like the way you learn is better than other places. I have a friend that goes to GWU and when i look at her notes, they are absolute **** half the time. Im sure most schools are like that, but thats something I've noticed. The facilites are kind of old, but the library is decent. Going to EVMS is not going to really hold you back from getting a residency at harvard or something if that is your relulctance to come.

i have a 2.7 bcpm and a 3.3 cgpa ... are you saying it would be a waste of time then to go through with evms for me as well because of my low grades, that i don't stand a chance to begin with?

Of course not. What my original post basically was saying is...that don't expect to do this program and expect to get a slew of interviews at other medical colleges. That's all. I think is program is honestly the best post bacc is becuase you take more medical classes than any other program, you actually "kind of feel" like a medical student, and the community at EVMS is great. I was just saying to blind kutha that this program is really more of linkage for EVMS rather than a hardcore stepping stone for kids who want to goto other med schools. Chowchilla, I dont know the exact stats of people getting in. Your stats look pretty good for the program. I dont know the exact stats of people who get in, but urs seem right on target. good luck!

when you say that the EVMS med master's program is more of a linkage program to EVMS and that you shouldn't expect a lot of interviews from other medical schools, you are referring to those who applied before/during their smp year, correct? I would imagine that applying after finishing the program would significantly increase your chances of getting interviews/acceptances overall and not just to EVMS.
 
i'm not such a stickler, so i'm perfectly happy to matriculate into the md program at evms. the only thing that worries me is the ridiculous cost. :scared:

My guess would be that it might help you out, but only if you do really well in the program. But if you were to ace all your classes, I really would not see the point in applying after the program was done. Instead you can be an M1 at EVMS and take 3 courses in your first year. Plus even if you were to apply after the program with stellar grades, you still risk the crapshoot process that is med school admissions. Basically, in terms of med school admissions, this program is the closest thing to a guarantee you are going to find.

A question for current MM's. Have any of you had interviews yet at EVMS or been accepted to EVMS?
 
They give us dates we can pick from to interview. They are actually starting this week and go through the end of the month. No Med Master finds out their acceptance status until after graduation (I am sure this is to keep motivation on grades and not just drop everything cause you got in, I know they could make it contingent on grades, but I guess that is an extra step they'd rather not take). I believe, that last year everybody found out with in a week or two after graduation, but in years past it could take as long as a couple of months to find out. Yeah we all agree, the limbo of not knowing kinda sucks, but what else are you going to do. Just do everything you can to make the grades, and slam your interview.

I completely agree with whoever broke it down in to making great grades will most likely make you more competitive to other schools after you finish the program, but are you willing to turn down an acceptance and the possibility of a light year just to try to go somewhere else. I can tell you now that the education you will get at EVMS is stellar. The profs are excellent and very attentive to your learning.
 
again, just to put it out there, Acceptance to the Medical Masters program in NO way guarantees your acceptance to the MD program, you have to work your butt off and consistently prove your worth. Its not like you can get accepted to this program (which is hard to do to begin with so congrats to those of you who have done so) and then just wait for next year to come around and be a Med student.
 
Officially had all my stuff overnighted to EVMS today. Wish me luck. I hope they have everything in my file by Friday or so. Are most of you hearing back around 2-3 weeks after completion?

Thanks for all the info up above! I am making my first trip to see the campus and the area this weekend. (I am from California). NIcole Priest is getting back to me about what Dr. Meyer wants to do when I get there. Other than that, anyone have advice on what I should check out or find out more about? I want to look at housing possibly close to the school, but I won't be putting any deposits down until I find out about Georgetown and Drexel. What are some good apartments/areas, and what are some areas I should avoid?

What did you hear? We have very little contact with med students. In my limited experience, they generally have been friendly.
 
i did the masters program last year and can honestly say that your experience here is what you make it to be. If you want to study at school and really interact with the first and second years, then hell yeah, you'll feel really a part of the school. If you choose to spend little time here and just show up for exams, you may not feel as much a part of the EVMS community.

At times you feel like a genuine M1- you're taking all the same classes, doing the same clubs/activities, etc. But then you snap back to reality and realize that you don't know if you're going to be here next year. It can be a little intense.
 
Hey, I have been having a hard time finding out my status at EVMS. I called the number in the "Application Recieved" email but only get a voicemail. Have you had better luck emailing or leaving voicemail? Or is it easier to call Ms. Priest?

Who have you been trying to contact? Dr. Meyer? He's been out of town, but he got back yesterday. I've had better luck leaving a voicemail for him. Nicole has picked up every time I called her. It takes her a little while to respond via email, but she has been good with that as well.

So your classes are not with medical students?

Also, I don't know if this helps anyone, but I just came back from visiting Norfolk and the EVMS campus. I got to talk to Nicole Priest and Dr. Meyer in person. Dr. Meyer said that the fall class of 20 students is not filled as of yet. There are a lot of applicants, but many of which have incomplete applications. And there has been a lot of turnaround in the past years since some people get accepted to med school and withdraw from the program. Classes are with first year medical students in two lecture halls. Most med masters students apply to medical school in the same year and end up going to EVMS. Some are able to test out of courses they did well in in their med masters year as a first year medical student, so they are able to take on research positions in one of the hospitals on campus, which they can put on their list of experiences for residency.
 
i'm starting to get worried because it's been over two weeks since my application was complete and i still haven't heard back from them.

how do the masters students generally cope with the stress? are the smpers a really close-knit community that you can count on for support and things like that?

how does that work? i thought it was one giant lecture hall with everyone crammed in.
 
There are two lecture halls. Classes are held in one or the other at a time. The classes you take as a med masters student, with the exception of a seminar and a research thesis, are taken at the same time and in the same lecture hall as the first year medical students. This is my understanding from Dr. Meyer and a current med master's student.

Are you a student at EVMS? because what you are saying does not apply at all to the Medical Masters program at EVMS. If you are talking about Georgetown's program please do so on their forum or thru P.M.'s.

As a Med master, like someone else said, with the exception of one class and your thesis, you take every single class with medical students, you sit next to them in class, have the same readings, same tests and same stress. We are meshed with them both educationally and socially. Occasionally, you remember that you are a Med master and kind of sink back to earth. From my experience as a med master, most every "second class student" feeling is almost totally in your head, and not the perception of the M1's.
 
PackLax - Yeah, the Galvani Frog is a georgetown student, but he only responded in this forum because I asked him, and i asked because of something he answered up above. no worries, it's still the evms forum 🙂
