Evms

i'm starting to get worried because it's been over two weeks since my application was complete and i still haven't heard back from them.
chill.

how do the masters students generally cope with the stress? are the smpers a really close-knit community that you can count on for support and things like that?
the Med Master's are not a really close knit community in the sense that we are exclusive. However, at least in my opinion, you can definitely count on us for support, which has been demonstrated in a few incidences to date. We are paired off with a "big sib" who was a MM the previous year. This means that you guys who are admitted will be getting one of us as a mentor who will help you navigate the year and beyond, including a CD of past tests and notes and advice for each course. The community 'at large' is close knit. We don't run around and do Med Master-only kinds of things, for the most part. We do "M1/MM"-only kinds of things, or "EVMS students" kinds of things.

how does that work? i thought it was one giant lecture hall with everyone crammed in.
by and large you are right. The "two lecture hall" thing is kind of misleading since it gives the idea that they are used equally by us. We are almost exclusively in one lecture hall with the M1's, and we basically sit still while professors come and go teaching us hour long lectures. When the M2's have a test booked or some event is going on, we will take our lectures in the smaller lecture hall located next door.

By the way, basically no one goes to class. (From what I hear 😀 )

Well, i'd say more like half don't go to class. It's not a big deal to skip.

But then it may come back to bite you in the ass. You may find yourself, just for example, writing an email at 3 in the morning the day of the test asking if anyone is awake that can tell you what's going to be tested😀 😀

Not that I KNOW ANYONE WHO THAT'S HAPPENED TO🙄

doooooom, anything to add?

I just got my acceptance to EVMS today (they actually sent it to me a week ago, while I was on vacation) and I have until next Friday to decide to accept the offer or not (10 days? really? not even two weeks?!). I have some questions for current med masters:

How long are you in class each day?
How many students go to EVMS for MD programs right after completion of the med masters program?
Do they actually make you wait until June/July to hear about acceptances?
Does anybody ever get into other medical schools?
Do most people finish the program?
What's the average GPA of people who finish the program?
How are the facilities on campus? Wireless internet?
What's it like living in Norfolk?

(I realize you may not be able to answer all of these...just curious!)

Ok, in an effort to not answer the same questions over and over and over, please read through this thread because most of the previous questions have already been answered.

As for the ones that I dont think are already on here...
Wireless? yes you have to drop your computer off in the I.T. department for about an hour and they put the network key on it and make sure you have up to date antivirus and what not.
Med school notifications? they dont set in stone when you hear about your acceptance, i think last year most everybody knew within two weeks from graduation. You'll probally have a good idea where you stand though.

if you have any other questions let me know.

Sorry....there's 8 pages in this thread and I'm using a coffee shop's internet service so I don't have a ton of time to read every post in the thread....I guess I'll wait until I go back to school and have access to the networked internet.

i am still under review too... how long does it take. i have been compeleted like four weeks ago. I was told that no one is hearing anything until april (after the deadline) which is apparently not true. am i rejected?

People have definitely started to hear. I asked Ms. Priest, and it seems like the time frame is roughly 2-4 weeks. If you don't hear next week you might as well give a call, she is SUPER nice.

yea... i am hoping that i would hear soon. I talked to nicole (preist?). for those of you who are already in, whats your stats?

Just so people have an idea of turnaround time, I sent in my stuff to EVMS in early Feb, and they got my letters in from Interfolio on March 5th. They sent me my acceptance on March 8th. So I'm guessing that if you're what they're looking for, they'll get back to you pretty quickly. Those who are maybe a bit less qualified for whatever reason might have to wait a bit longer for the acceptances to be shifted around (with a 10 day turnaround they must move the list pretty quickly).

Very nice info. Looks like they wanted you all along, just needed your letters to make it official. I was just put out for review this past week. I will let you guys know the outcome. :luck:

according to an email i received this morning in response to a query i had, applications are still being reviewed by the committee. whatever that means.

I am from out of state and was accepted about a month ago. I was just wondering about where students live since evms doesn't offer student housing. If you have any information on this please let me know.

There is student housing, but there is a long waiting list. When housing packets become available, they will be sent to us, and I'm thinking there will be more information about that...since I went to the campus and I wasn't able to put myself on the list. Most students live within a mile of the campus in the ghent area. There are a lot of apartments and houses. You can call the admissions or financial aid office to ask more about it and/or request an apartment guide about apartments in the area...or google norfolk apartments. I am from out of state too.

I'm wondering about apartments myself-I've never gone apartment hunting before so this is completely new to me. I have the luxury of being able to go visit the area, though.

So who is officially going to EVMS this fall? I'm 95% sure I'll be there....I'm leaving the 5% for extenuating circumstances. 😛

I got accepted to Georgetown today! But I am still strongly leaning towards EVMS because I like the class size and interaction level with faculty and medical students...so most likely I will see you there! It's time for a trip to Washington, D.C. ...

Congrats on the acceptance 'science!!!! DC is a beautiful area, but expensive!

I am still wait listed at two med schools but assuming I do not get in, which at this point I have pretty much given up hope, I will be going to evms.

But there will be movement on med school waitlists after May 15th. Best of luck to you! If not, most likely I will see you in Virginia 🙂.

Thanks! That's what I hear...but it's not like Norfolk is super cheap either. YAY LOANS! 😱

DC is heinously expensive. Nofolk is much more reasonable (comparatively...). If you want recs on where to visit be sure to ask-I've gots lots of recommendations. 🙂 Great town.

I was concerned because my application had been complete for some time and I hadn't heard anything so I e-mailed Dr. Meyer. His response indicated that the process will play out well into the summer.

that sucks. did he give a more specific timeline or was that it?

Last time I called, they said 2-4 weeks hopefully. I migh give them a call next week. They are my first choice right now, hopefully we hear something soon.

It has been 8 weeks since my app was complete...There was no indication of a specific time frame at all. I'm really anxious and would like to know that I have someplace to go this fall.

Have you called Ms. Priest or Dr. Meyers and asked for an update? You might be on hold.

I just spoke to Nicole Priest and she told me it would be 2-3 weeks. I've been really anxious, EVMS is one of my top choices. I sent in my application around March 8th and they processed my check on the 15th, so I figure I was complete around then. Good luck to all of you, and quit stalking the fed-ex guy haha.

lol whenever I see the FedEx truck I get so excited. EVMS we heart you.

This might be a little early but it seems that there are a few posters who have their hearts set on EVMS. Anyone looking for a roommate next year? I'm looking to spend at least 600-700 bucks a month on a nice spot close to campus. I'm thinking those two towers, Hague and Pembroke, or something similar to that? There appear to be some nice apartments just North of Downtown. I want to get a 2 bed 1-2 bath spot. I'll probably be driving out there in early August from San Diego, maybe Orange County, California. I plan on visiting the area in June/July to setup housing arrangements. PM me if interested...

well, i've been complete since some of the other folks here who've received acceptances so i'm guessing i'm not quite their 'ideal' candidate. in any case, i'm going to try and get in touch with them and get a better answer on my status.

Blindkutha's post got me thinking...

Wanted: Roommate to share Apartment. Must be EVMS Student (need not be MedMaster's student though).

I am a 22 year old male. I am a Christian, and would prefer a Christian roommate, though I would consider a non-Christian roommate for whom Christianity is not a problem. I have been looking at places both very near (2 minute walks) to campus, and up to a 20 minute drive away.

I'm an Ohio State student who will graduate in June. I will move to Norfolk in early August.

I'm a conservative, fairly physically active - but still overweight😳, I love sports (Especially College Football). I intend to make my studies my top priority, but will still have fun and occasionally go out (drink).
I need a roommate who is fairly neat, but not totally anal. I put high emphasis on honesty, and also value a sense of humor.

If you're interested PM me with some of your info and we can talk more.

hey this is my first post so bear with me. I am a graduating senior at the College of William and Mary with a GPA of 2.77, MCAT 27Q, majoring in Neuroscience and Kinesiology. I also have 2 years of clinical setting work as a medical scribe. I have recently applied to EVMS Medical Master's with the hopes of getting accepted, but with the knowledge that I probably won't.

Can anybody advise me on a) chances of acceptance, b) any ways in the future to improve my eligibility, and c) other programs to apply to. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

I'm a william and mary grad as well, neuroscience and biochem. Your GPA is what's hurting you, but EVMS does look quite favorably on WM grads. I dont know about that favorably, but you do get a little leeway. I have no idea on your chance of acceptability, you should try to contact Dr. Meyer. Taking some science classes over the summer, or doing a post-bacc program or other classes that will count to your undergrad GPA is probably the best bet.

Did you do your scribing at Sentara or Mary Immaculate?

Thanks Phishfood, I am scribing at MIH. I will take your advice and talk to Dr. Meyer. Do you know anything about the program at MCV?

I dont know much about it. A friend of mine, in a conversation describing how EVMS's SMP program offers a good way into EVMS, said that VCU's is not associated with the medical school and as such doesnt increase your odds of getting into MCV.

I scribed at MIH as well. Perhaps I know you...how eerie.

To all current and past med masters: is everyone in the med masters program guaranteed an interview from evms? This was the impression I got from reading past posts on the program. Also, I read from an earlier post that the average gpa of med masters in one particular year was around 3.2. Is this the same as the gpa you need to maintain in the program in order to be accepted to the med school?

Thanks a lot!

You are guaranteed an interview, as to average gpa i'm not sure, sorry.

I think this has been said before, but Nicole (Preist?) is sooo nice. You can tell when you're talking with someone who loves their job. Evms was (maybe) 2nd to Gtown out of the 6 post-bacc prog's I applied to, but after a phone call with her last week, it's in the running for 1st just because of how my phone call and questions were handled.😀

CTDent, are you predent? I've never heard of someone do the program that is predent?

Yes, predent. I've been out of school awhile so the last "science" classes I took were over 5 years ago. It is because of that, and an average gpa (about 3.1) that a post-bacc will help me compete for a dental school seat next year. There are usually many more pre-med students that do the post-bacc programs, but some are pre-dents too, because the classes are very similar between year 1 in med and dental school (biochem, med. physio, etc...).

Yeah I totally agree. Nicole Priest was far more interested and helpful than Ms. Cabiness from Georgetown.

what did you guys ask? all she said to me is that they havn't notified applicants yet which apparently isn't true. I emailed dr meyer but he never emailed me back. I really want to know if I have a chance of getting in. I hate this wait

well i don't think she (or anyone else really) can tell you if you have a chance other than telling you what the average mcat scores and gpa of past applicants and students, which i'm sure you already know from the website or this thread. dr. meyer did tell me that in past years the evms class was finalized in july, after much movement on the waiting list and students declining to attend because they got into medical school. when i asked him last month if he had all 20 spots filled, he said he was nowhere near that point, let alone have a waitlist. my questions for nicole and the coordinator at georgetown were regarding scheduling a tour and meeting up with program directors of each program. Nicole and Dr. Meyer were more than happy to show me around. I even met a current student and the med school admissions director. Georgetown doesn't do that apparently since I am one of thousands of students, and they don't have time.

no problem. waiting does suck. hope you hear from them soon.

anybody heard anything this week. I was told that applicants should start to hear this month.
