Evms

Thanks, Phishfood and PackLax for your responses!

That's really too bad about the tuition. I'm assuming that you guys are still taking a pretty full courseload then for that price? Is there a list of elective classes posted somewhere to fill those potential 2-3 classes in the semester?

Also do either of you know what the situation is with scholarship/financial aid from EVMS based on how you do in the Medical Masters program? Does EVMS provide you with a better package based on your performance in that year?

I was recently accepted into the program and I'm coming from out of state, so that EVMS tuition down the line looks pretty expensive...

Most every bit of help you could receive from EVMS is going to be need based. In order to set the playing field even, the need is based on parents income whether you are still a "dependent" or are a 46 year old non traditional student. As for filling in the schedule, if you are motivated you can certainly find stuff to add to your application, research vol exp etc. Can't complain about the tuition too badly, think of it like a commodity, you have to pay for your masters degree, and you have to pay for your doctorate degree, not a buy one get one 25% off deal.

not much of a courseload, but you can find things to do if you're so inclined.

Or not. depending on how ambitious you are, you could just bomb off on vacation for weeks at a time. EVMS won't mind. they already have your money.

Also do either of you know what the situation is with scholarship/financial aid from EVMS based on how you do in the Medical Masters program? Does EVMS provide you with a better package based on your performance in that year?
You won't get a scholarship for being smart, but you can get need-based money or maybe get a scholarship for agreeing to go into family medicine/work in an underserved area. All the M1's compete for those, though; you're not going to get any sort of aid based on being a med master.

turn tricks on Colley.

Did anyone else get an email asking for a photograph? I submitted all my stuff earlier this week and just got an email today asking for a passport sized picture.

Does anyone plan to use a PDA at EVMS next year? I was thinking about getting one in order to become more familiar with these devices as we will likely be using them in the not too distant future. Also, does anyone know whether a certain model is suggested for use at the school?

I was thinking about the Palm T/X handheld.

Thanks for the input.

i did get an email from them to send me a pic..i sent it...and 2 days later they put me on the waitlist..hahaha..i guess im not hot enough for evms.!!

good luck guys.

I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself here with getting a PDA already. You may need a PDA for your 3rd year and beyond but right now its not necessary at all. We are given print outs of the entire semesters class schedule. Most of us have that with us at all times and we use it every day. Alternatively, our class schedule is available online and can be imported into your PDA if you want. I think it'd be over kill at this point to get a PDA solely to have your class schedule on it. Its pretty simple, go to school at 9 AM and theres a 95% chance that you'll have a class scheduled. Personally, I'd save the couple of hundred bucks and buy a PDA in a few years when they're better, faster, smaller, and cheaper.

To answer a previous question, previous med masters who are now M1s with very little course load elect to do research and gain more clinical experience, among other things. The ambitious ones essentially get a head start on building up that resume for residency.

was this justs recently?

I got the picture request email as well, just yesterday...

If it helps, I submitted my application around 1/23, got the email about the picture 1/25, was finally complete around 2/6 (had a missing transcript), and was accepted 2/14.

Best of luck to the rest of you! :luck:

When is the deadline for applications? I have a poor GPA, so I am trying to wait until this last semester is over, and until I get my MCAT score back.
I appreciate any answers

Definitely recommend an M1 or former med master roommate... even if they never put their dishes in the dishwasher. From my own apt/roommate search I recommend that you look for something in Ghent or West Ghent areas. These areas are with in walking distance or short drive distance to the school. Off street parking is a real plus, but general parking permits are cheap ($10) and easy to obtain from city hall. This is an old and gentrified area so finding a parking space on the street near your building is sometimes a challenge. Ghent is safe, yuppie, and family friendly, and prices are reasonable $800-1200 for a 1 bedroom depending on options.
I would avoid areas between 21st Street and 43rd street because of crime, Willoughby Spit and Oceanview areas because of flooding and bridge and tunnel traffic. Other good options are Colonial Place, certain neighborhoods around ODU, Freemason, and Downtown. Virginia Beach has some good 12mo lease rates. Traffic is not bad coming from VA Beach and generally has a commute time of 30min+. VA Beach, Newport News, Ghent, and West Ghent especially are family friendly areas.
I would highly recommend coming out to look at an apartment first before signing a lease. The quality and upkeep of a property are directly related to quality of the landlord and management!! Some older buildings can be absolute dungeons. Don't be afraid to check to make sure all the lights, windows, and water fixtures work properly. If you have to sign a lease with out seeing the property I would suggest going with a larger complex because they at least should have a maintenance crew. Hague Towers is nicer (but pricier) than Pembroke. They also tend to resemble old age homes more than apartment complexes and some people have complained about getting noise complaints for walking around or while they weren't even there.
I found my roommate and apartment through SDN. I got a great deal and highly recommend searching the MD and PA EVMS threads as well to look for roommate and apartments. Craigslist (norfolk.craigslist.com) is highly active for the area. Just type in Ghent in the search field to find apartments around EVMS. The school synapse website is good for roommates. I would also recommend talking to a real estate agent. I used Nancy Chandler, she appears to be the local real estate queen (www.nancychandler.com).
For the independently wealthy out there I also got a market prospectus on buying vs. renting. This was done in May '07 so the information might not be good anymore, but according to the agent I talked to it is difficult to break even in Ghent, in four years, by buying a property and renting out the spare rooms. Because of gentrification there are attractive tax abatement programs, but these do not always extend to people who are renting out their properties. You should either be prepared to stay in their area to manage the property after med school is over, sell at a loss, or be prepared to manage long distance (which may include buying into a property management group). Money magazine rated the Norfolk area in its top 30 housing markets to collapse in '08. It is uncertain how this will affect the Ghent area because it is high desirable. The realtor recommended that I wait until I gain an acceptance into med school, determine what my debt load will actually be, and see how the market pans out before diving in.
I have done some research on craigslist recently and I have not found a better deal than renting and having a roommate. When I went looking for my apartment, I took a long weekend and flew down to norfolk with the intent of signing a lease, or at least putting security down. I researched 4 places before leaving, drove around the neighborhoods, and picked from the 4. There was a lot to choose from, but it got snatched up quick, so the earlier you sign, the better.

Anybody get accepted from Connecticut or southern New England?

So anyone going to EVMS wanted to be roomates? 😀
I'm from Texas, not sure if I'm getting a car or not, I'm thinking of somewhere close to campus (within walking distance) such as the pembroke towers or something.
Anyway let me know, thanks 🙂

For those on the waitlist...

It helps to show a continued interest in the program. Definitely make an effort to contact the Program Director Dr. Meyer and speak with him personally. If you're in the area, it may be even worth it to come out and have an official visit.

I dont believe the wait list is based solely on MCAT. EVMS MS admissions is really about the total picture, not just MCAT and GPA.

Expect more waitlist movement after May 15th. Thats the date when admitted med school applicants lose their deposits at whatever med school(s) they have placed a deposit. A lot of people hold spots at schools they have no intention of going to and wait until the last minute to reclaim their deposits. Spots open up all over the place and borderline candidates have a shot at getting in perhaps opening up seats at EVMS.

Good luck.

Once again, for those currently in the program. How is the class doing overall? and about how many people got into med school already??? and Anyone got into EVMS yet?

Does anyone know if EVMS requires its students to purchase a particular type of laptop for school?

Thanks!

No particular laptop is required. Choose any one that you would like. The IT department will install the wireless network key and anti-virus software if you haven't already done so.

Halo - Classes are going well. After spring break is a really hectic time. The deadline for the thesis is coming up next week and we pretty much have at least one exam per week for the next six weeks. We also have two cumulative exams. So needless to say, we are fairly busy keeping on top of things.

There have been a few MD and DO acceptances. No word from EVMS yet. Interviews for us were during the month of March. It is customary that after interviews, everyone in the class is waitlisted until at least May. Sometime in May they will start pulling people from the Med Master's program into the MD class.

There isn't a specific requirement. You don't even need to have a laptop, but if you get a mac, the IT department doesn't provide computer support for it.

Thanks BK, another question, is the waitlist the same for you as it is for other people who are not in the program? or do the med masters get a preference over others (of course considering that they did well).

We are on the same waitlists as the other interviewees; split into in-state and out-of-state. However, we do have preference if we have done well in the program. The faculty members know us very well and that carries a lot of weight. Basically, you need to work hard, make decent grades and show that you really want to be at EVMS. Your time at EVMS in the Med Master program is not for competing against other students but to prove your dedication and ability to complete the medical school curriculum.

This year, 342 people applied for a little more than 20 spots which is an increase of about 100 applicants since last year. Free SDN marketing!

To further clear up the MCAT wait list thing, having a higher MCAT score > 30 and a not so bad GPA may actually set off alarms for admissions into the program. The committee begins to ask themselves, why havent these applicants been accepted into med school yet? A very likely reason (among many), character flaws. The admissions process does not involve an interview so people often "slip through the cracks." This is usually when great rec letters and good personal statements come in handy. I have actually heard of a significant number of rec letters that are one line saying this person is an idiot, dont accept them into your program. In general, try to get an unofficial read of your rec letters just so you know whats going into them. In fact, a couple of my rec letters were brought up during my MD interview here (in a good way). So believe it or not, having both a good GPA and a decent MCAT score may actually hurt your admissions chances into an SMP. EVMS is really about trying to assess your character and not just admit you based on your intellectual abilities.

That being said, it seems like there will be a decent amount of movement on the wait list NOT solely dependent on your MCAT scores. A lot of people accepted into the program are still waiting to hear from med schools so expect movement after the magical date of May 15th and later into the summer.

In general, if really you want to come here, make sure you let them know that. Keep updated contact information and maintain an active role, maybe even submit additional rec letters.

How many people are in the class of MM '08 and when do you guys hear back? I am interested in knowing how successful this years class was.

For people who don't feel like going back through the thread:

MM '07=15/18 got in.
MM '06=17/18 got in.

21 people will graduate this year. But one person in our class that is graduating did not apply to med school this year, so only 20 of us are eligible for admission. Also, I believe that the actual stats for the MM '07 class are 16/18, since one person during the summer was accepted off the waitlist. I might be mistaken about this though.

We should find out our status around May 15th.

did any of you apply anywhere other than EVMS? do you know so stats of previews classes that applied else where and got in? Thanks

I think everyone in our class applied to at least one other medical school besides EVMS. There is 1 person in our class who is not applying to medical school at all this year. However, at least 3 people in our class have already been accepted to other allopathic medical schools. 1 other person was accepted to multiple other osteopathic schools.

I can't really speak for any previous classes, except I have heard that around 3 people from the Med Masters 2007 class went to other medical schools besides EVMS.

If you don't mind, could you tell me what are some of the schools that your class have applied to and what are the schools that accepted you guys? Thanks much

Schools applied to? All over the place. Virginia residents typically apply to all the Virginia schools, maybe some others around Washington DC and other places based on personal preference. Out of state students are different and apply all over the place.

So far, people have been accepted at MCV/VCU, University of Cincinnati.... probably some others that I am unaware of. Many of us are wait-listed at multiple schools. But it's still early in the admissions game... we haven't reached the magic date of May 15 yet, when waitlists are expected to move.

Do Med Masters get Thanksgiving off? I was taking a look at the calendar, and I didn't see it listed on there as part of the fall break. Does the semester just run non-stop from mid-August to mid-December? Thanks!

According to the schedule as it stands right now, MM's have class until noon on Nov. 26 and then are off until Monday Dec. 1.

Are you guys OK? I just heard about the tornado! Anyone affected?

Are you guys OK? I just heard about the tornado! Anyone affected?

The tornado hit Suffolk, which is about 15-20 miles from EVMS. As far as I know, no students live in that area. I don't know if anyone may have relatives there who were affected. From what I have heard, there was but one fatality, which seems almost miraculous considering the damage. It was an extremely powerful storm. Hopefully those who were injured or suffered property loss can recover quickly.

Yes it did look pretty scary! I'm not very familiar with VA so I wasn't sure how close you guys were.
I hope everyone and their families are alright.

Yeah, I've lived hear for 9 months and although Suffolk definitely sounded familiar, I had to google it so see just how far away it was. I haven't exactly had a lot of time to get out and see the area, being a medmaster and all.

i just received a email from Ms. Solomon about the change of orientation date. i counted the emails she sent out, it appears that there are 23 of us that she sent, so i guess these are the class of 2009 Master's then? are they going to accept more?

I thought I'd post some responses to questions I have been asked from people accepted into the program.

1. Why did you choose EVMS, especially as a CA resident?

I chose this program over others because it truly is the best one when you look at all the facts. If you want to get into a med school in a year and your GPA is beyond saving (I had a 2.9), this is the best place to be by far. Only one other program has a success rate even comparable to EVMS's one year out success rate (the Tulane ACP but you have to be waitlisted at a med school to even apply). EVMS's program is small and not just an extra source of financing like the Boston University, Rosalind Franklin University, and Georgetown programs are. You really get a 1 on 1 interaction with them that no other SMP can offer (ie histology lab, biochem small groups, physio labs, topics in biomedical sciences, thesis, research techniques, ccbp). Coming in from a large state school, where I didnt even know my professors names or be able to even recognize them if I walked passed them, this has been an interesting change. The program is also relatively cheap and the cost of living being cheaper than most areas. With my GPA, I really have no shot at any CA med schools or most US MD schools in general. With EVMS's grading system, I can demonstrate how well I have done relative to my classmates and the current M1s. As a med student, they have an honors, high pass, pass, marginal pass grading system so if I do well, residency programs will be able to see that and I will hopefully be able to get a tough residency spot.

Did you have any other choices and why did you choose EVMS over other SMP programs?

I got into the BU and RFU program. They seemed quite reluctant to answer my questions and I really couldnt find out that much about the programs, either through their websites, SDN or contacting the staff directly. The information I did get didnt make me confident that these programs would help me out with my specific problem area.

I felt that if I did the BU program, I'd have to sacrifice 2 years and a ton of money becuase my GPA is so bad. While dealing with BU, it seemed like they could care less about the students in the program. I did not have a pleasant experience with them at all.

I think the RFU program is also new for this year but the previous program had a high drop rate thus creating a misleading statistic about its success rates. North Chicago is not Chicago and its much worst than Norfolk. That school is a total money ploy. Their med master program is huge (<140) and has a big drop out rate. I think its like 40% of the class doesnt finish. The school is a total business money making scheme. They call it the Chicago Medical School but its not even in Chicago! Its like almost an hour north. The reason their California residency rate is so high is because a ton of Californians go there. EVMS doesnt have a lot of Californians (maybe 4 a year) but still places the ones who want to go back into good residency spots. EVMS also has much higher average board scores (ranked in the top 15). I'm not sure if RFU places people into "good" California residency spots in tough specialties.

I've been told the following but it remains to be proved for me: Once you're in at EVMS, they want to keep you here. Everyone is on your side and you basically have a spot waiting for you in the next years class, and its only yours to lose. EVMS pretty much gives you a clean slate on your academic life and its really all about how you do in the classes here. At EVMS, there really isnt a disparity between Med Masters and M1s like that which exists at other programs. M1s pretty much treat us as equals and often times ask us for help and tutoring. There are graduates from the Georgetown and BU programs here and they unanimously agree that this program is better than theirs.

I also got into a few Caribbean schools but those were my backup plans in the event I didnt get into an SMP. I figured I'd be willing to sacrifice a year instead of having to jump through hoops for the rest of my life and really putting limits on my medical career before it has even started.

2. How is the EVMS program received at other medical schools to which you have applied to this year? Were there any in particular which were impressed?

I applied to 36 schools this time around (MD [31] + DO [5]). I was only offered an interview by EVMS. My GPA is the only part of my package that is holding me back. Crossing that 3.0 threshold is key.

However, for my classmates, we have people accepted at VCU, Indiana University, University of Cincinnati, and the CA DO schools. Waitlisted at VCU, GWU, Tulane, Albany, and SUNY Downstate. Some people were granted interviews after the ad comms saw how they did in their first semester so this program does carry some weight. Ad comms have heard of SMP programs and they know that if you do well in them, you'll probably do well at their school as well. As far as previous classes go, people have been accepted at UCSF, Tulane, JMC, Tufts, NYMC, GWU, U Pit, various DO schools, Penn State, and a few others. It really depends on how you do, how your stats are before the program, and how you interview. VCU and GWU seem to like EVMS, judging by the number of people who interviewed there and have been accepted, both previously and currently.

Hey, I received this e-mail too....looks like as of now that's the class, but I thought they accepted much more than 23 students because some of these would decline acceptance due to med school acceptances or for other SMPs.

I'm excited though! Can't wait to meet you guys and check out Norfolk...has anyone started looking for housing tentatively?

Blindkutha, thanks for your updates...I find your posts very informative. Let us know how you fare with EVMS and how many of you current MM's will be in the M1 class.

Well the last thing they would want to do is over admit. I guess they way it works is they offer 23 spots and when/if one of the 23 declines the pull someone from the waitlist they already have set up.

makes sense.

I honestly thought the Med Master's class would be larger this year though, bc apparently they received a large number of apps, but it looks like this hasn't changed the size of the program which makes me more comfortable in knowing EVMS is not a cash cow program..
