Evms

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I called and they told me I moved down the waitlist. From my experience, the admission office is very nice.

Sorry, didn't mean to come off like a braggart or anything.

Anyway, I hope you hear some good news from EVMS in the not so distant future!

Oh, you weren't bragging...I'm just kinda down in the dumps right now. Being on a waitlist is kind of like being in purgatory. Ew.

Just to let everyone know that EVMS has not made decisions about all of us interviewed on 12//7. I called yesterday and they told me to call back at the end of next week. Have a good weekend.

Hey Everybody,
I interviewed 12/7 called 1/03 and got waitlisted in the upper 1/3 and I am out of state.

I interviewed 12/12, called today (1/7) and was waitlisted upper 1/3 in state.

Am I correct in believing that people are not accepted off the wait list until the end of the application season, and can anyone give me a date on that?

I think there was one instance of someone being "waitlisted" and then accepted a few weeks after but there appears to be some controversy regarding that. As far as I have read, the waitlist only begins to move when the application process is over. Good luck!

wow,

so i was all excited to get my first interview with evms, now i read this thread....

and it looks like i will be interviewing for a rejection?

my interview is on jan. 30th, any hints, suggestions? i really like this school.

Just got an interview invite today for Feb 1st. Does anyone know how many acceptances they have given out so far and if they have many seats left open. Any hints or suggestions about the interview and a good place to stay the night before?

What I'm about to say is solely based on what I have read on the forums and heard from the admission's office.

EVMS is rolling so generally the earlier your interview is, the more spots there are for you to get accepted. Of course, that's not necessarily bad news for those who are interviewing now since there are still spots available for people. Even if you don't get an interview now, there is always the possibility of being placed on the waitlist, which (from what I hear) moves very quickly; meaning that many people get taken off the waitlist. As to how many people have been accepted already, I don't believe the admission's office is going to release that information so the best we can do is guestimate from the number of people who were accepted/waitlisted/rejected from SDN.

Hope this helps =) I plan to see all of you in Norfolk next (school) year!

i probably should have read the previous posts a little more closely =P

What really helped me in the interview process was looking at the interview forums for EVMS on SDN. Students in the past gave impressions of their interviews and sample questions as well. I practiced off those. However, keep in mind that they will ask questions that are tailored to you specifically (drawing from what you wrote in your application) and so you probably won't get generic questions (except for maybe the healthcare question). Best of luck! and don't worrrrrrrry =)

I HIGHLY recommend staying with a current student if you can. I did, and it definitely helped me. The student was extremely nice, and more than willing to help explain some things about the school to me so that I knew more about it going into the interview. He of course told me the good and the bad, and was able to really help me understand what the school seems to be looking for in applicants. That gave me confidence for my interview. Also, you can't beat the price (free, vs. paying for a hotel).

As far as the interview itself, read the SDN interview feedback page for EVMS. Pretty much all the big questions you'll encounter (except specific ones about your experiences) will be there. They're big on healthcare issues, so read up a little. I went in thinking I was fairly well prepared, and afterwards I felt like I was even OVERPREPARED compared to many other applicants, based on their favorable reactions.

I'm OOS, and interviewed on a day when almost everyone else was IS and on their first interview (it was my 7th), so I think a lot of those people seemed a bit more nervous before the interview than I felt, and from talking with them afterwards, it seems as though this hindered them a bit as far as relaxing and fielding any tough questions. So my best recommendation for you is to read up on healthcare policy (and how you would change the current system to improve it), and RELAX. Confidence is key in any interview, but nowhere is it more beneficial than at EVMS.

Also, FWIW, I've been accepted to a couple other schools, including my state school . . . I'm still holding my acceptance at EVMS, and will for a little while until I figure out exactly where I will be matriculating . . . there's still a chance I may go there, but in all honesty it's likely I'll be giving up my spot, so that's one more spot for one of you guys hopefully!

Just got an invite to interview in Feb. or March...Is it worth it for me to drive 7 hours to the school this late in the process? A lot of people seem to be getting waitlisted.
Thanks

I just got the same interview invite today...would anyone be willing to share some of the things they really like about this school/location...I am trying to decide if I should schedule this interview so late in the process when I already have an acceptance to a school I love (Ohio St.)...what is EVMS all about?!? Thanks in advance!!

I knew very little about EVMS when I applied however the more I researched the school I realized how much the atmosphere of the school, students and city really clicked with me. I quite enjoyed their teaching style where they encourage all students to begin learning bed-side manners from day one. Actually.... they have you do that during the interview which was pretty neat.

The location is great as it is the main teaching hospital for many miles around so you undoubtedly get some interesting cases from the surrounding city. Additionally, the school is located by Virginia Beach. Have always told myself that I would like to be at school by the ocean and EVMS fits in that picture.

This, of course, is all based on my very own opinion. Other applicants will have different feelings. I think that you should go ahead and give EVMS a chance and interview there and you too may find yourself entranced by the atmosphere =)

Haven't seen anything posted in a while. Anything new with EVMS (acceptances, waitlists, rejections, anything)?

How likely is it to get into EVMS from the middle third of the waitlist?

more likely than me getting in from the bottom tier. 🙄

but in all seriousness, as an OOS app in the middle, your chances are pretty good. the OOS waitlists always move a lot more than IS.

Anyone know if you are able to gain Virginia residency status for 2nd year at EVMS if your spouse works there for 12 months, so you can pay in state tuition?

Really?! I always thought it worked the other way around. I am going to bug them though...send a second update letter (go a new job since interview)...and updated official transcripts that will boost my GPA to a 3.72...

Right now I am tired of these stupid waitlists!

At my interview they said that it's possible to gain in-state status but they will not adjust your tuition if you do. Specifically, if you start out as OOS you will pay OOS tuition all four years. Your spouse working there might have some effect, but I don't know really.

hmm, I dunno. VA is really picky about becoming a resident. I know that if you personally move there for school you're not qualified to become a resident. If your spouse becomes one, eh, maybe? But maybe not...usually more than a year of taxes is required. I think it might be closer to 5 years of taxes, but I'm not positive.

I know I saw the link around here somewhere, but there is a Va gov website that lists exactly the requirements. I would try googling it.

In December I was waitlisted at top 1/3, in January i moved down to middle third, today i'm back up to upper third. EVMS is my only hope now cause Texas screwed me. Common evms give me some love.

have you been calling to find out your position in the waitlist?

How often have you guys been calling to check out your waitlist position? I haven't called since back in Nov./Dec. (don't remember which).

I called at the beginning of every month. They are nice at giving out where you are on the waitlist.

First off, I have scoured their website front to back (otherwise I would not have put the time in to finish the secondary apps). I also am reading what I can from people's commentary on SDN. Can anyone suggest any other sources of information on EVMS? Are there any current medical students that would be willing to answer the questions of this applicant? Any help would be much appreciated.

I've been asking former students for their opinions. There's not a lot out there besides the website and SDN though. Look up some recent grads and shoot off some emails...maybe try facebook?

are you interviewing soon? what are your questions?

Sorry for the late response, spotty internet access. I am interviewing in Feb, and I'd really like to talk to a student about life in Norfolk. I'm an OOS applicant and would like to know more about cost of living, ease of access, etc. Practical questions as such. Also, if any student is willing to host for a night I would REALLY REALLY REALLLLLLY appreciate it!

Not a student (yet!) but I know a little bit about it. Most of the students live in an area of Norfolk called "Ghent." This is the area immediately surrounding the school. It's pretty nice, but is close to some ghetto places...so things can get a little dicey at times, but in general it's a pretty nice area. It's a little pricey too, but you can walk to school, so what do you want?!? There's some nice bars in Ghent where the students hang out.

I've also talked to some students who live in Chesapeake or some nicer areas of Western Virginia Beach. I've heard stay away from anything across a tunnel because of the horrible tunnel traffic.

Hope that helps a little. You can google Ghent Norfolk and get some results. Also, norfolk.craigslist.com is pretty good.

Thanks for the help!

So I have an interesting situation I was faced with today. I called EVMS this afternoon to check into when I might hear something and they told me I was accepted! However, when I got home from work I had a letter in the mail from EVMS and they told me I was on the waitlist. I was dumbfounded. Was I on the waitlist or was I accepted? So I called the admissions office and they told me I was placed on the waitlist on 2/12 and then accepted on 2/14. So luckily what the lady told me over the phone initially was correct, I was accepted. Although I was waitlisted as well but for a very short timeframe. I am glad I called earlier in the day because I would have been bummed out getting the waitlist letter, although I would have gotten the acceptance later probably sometime next week.

man, i hope you choose your state school, cause I kinda need that evms spot. Well good luck. accepted on valentine's day.

Bump...just for EVMS love...

oh poopy stains... I thought this was finally going to be an EVMS update from someone.. been waiting 5 weeks for my decision when everyone else seems to get it in 1-3.. that can't be good.

Sorry. I'm hoping that getting the thread back into the realm of the living might help.

Have you called them?

Emailed during week 3.. was told that she would email me when a decision was made. Called during week 4 when she said "I said I would email you". Not in a mean tone or anything, just as a reminder. I just emailed again this morning NOT asking for a decision but just when the Adcom is going to meet so I know when to expect one. I flat out told them in my email that I'm going crazy checking my email every 5 minutes.

Hmmm...interesting. Well, good luck. I'd be going nuts too.

Oh, wait...I still am. Sitting on the waitlist sucks.

I'm an OOS male and will almost certainly withdrawing my acceptance from EVMS for either my state school or another one nearby me . . . so if you're an OOS male maybe my spot will be yours.

Thanks anyways, but IS. I'm sure someone will take it, it's a great school.

I'm an OOS male, but not on the waitlist yet. Perhaps you could call and specifically donate your spot to me? haha, that would really make this application process crazy.

Haha, unfortunately that probably wouldn't work. But I do hope you get in. I really enjoyed my visit there, but with the OOS pricetag it's just a little bit too much. My state school isn't crazy cheap like some, but it's cheap enough to make a difference to me.

I know that you are under a lot of strees waiting for news, I have been there ... it sucks. But my suspician is that your frequency of follow-ups may be a bit over the top. The key is to maintain enough contact to demonstrate maintained interest, without going overboard and appearing like a freaky adcom stalker. There is no magic pattern or manner of contact, but a little social common sense will likely take you a long way 😉 After all, they will definitely let you know when you are accepted (they need you to sign the forms to fill the slot, or reject it so they can move on). Even if you knew exactly when the adcom meetings were all scheduled, who was attending, how many files were being examined, etc etc, there is no gaurantee that your file would even be up for review yet. Maybe try to occupy your mind with something else. Do you have any hobbies that you can get more involved with?

I understand what you're saying and trust me, today's email is the last one I'm sending. As far as occupying my mind.. my research job keeps me very busy. Although my xbox just broke so that's not helping. Just finished reading "I hope they serve beer in hell" and I'm starting "Better a Surgeon's notes on performance".

"Better" is very good. If you haven't already, you should also read complications, also by Gawande.

OOS male on the WL. Maybe I will get Rogerwilco's spot.

Hi everyone! Good luck to those on the waitlist. 🙂 I'm currently trying to choose between EVMS and Rush. It's a hard decision but I think I am ultimately going to be in Chicago unless I find compelling reasons not to go. I'm really going to miss out on the Children's Hospital of the King's daughters 🙁 ugggg.
