I was curious if there was anyone else using these? I took the first one last night at a busy starbucks (to begin to aclimate myself to the "be prepared for anything" test climate) and I got rocked. I scored a 5!! :scared:. Its okay though because I knew verbal was going to be the hardest. I was curious if anyone else using these tests could post their scores and or advice (I know there was a thread a while back, but that was for the April exam and I'm in need of encouragment and advice from the august takers. Thanks

With 3 days left you're pretty much out of time, period. The last day or two of your studying should be spent doing nothing MCAT related at all. No tests, no passages, no discretes, no flashcards, no SDN, you get the idea.

A bit too late for that...but I will be taking the last day off just reviewing formulas. I still want to go through AAMC 8,9,11 but debating if I should skip out on 8...

EK 8= 8 (finally broke 7, but I did only six passages in 58 mins. Total number of questions was 41 though) Should I be happy, or not?

So I decided to take a one week break from verbal...I had just started to average an 8......and today I did two passages and ended up getting 6 right out of the 12 questions......I thought I did better... I was interested in the topics and I thought I understood the questions.

What's happening?.... Is verbal something I must continue to practice everyday until I take the mcat in Jan.

january? i think youre starting way too early. youre probably better on just doing something like a few passages a week + reading books & things like economist/newsweek. you dont want to run out of resources too early

I am going to give EK verbal a break.... I am also in PR verbal accelerator course and PR mcat review course so I will probably stick to TPR and AAMCs verbal until for now.... EK is too weird last week I was scoring 8s and I am getting half the questions wrong per passage.

I realize EK 101 is just for practice and should be used after you got the skills and techn. ( I will learn the skills and techn. from my PR course and than come back to EK)

EK 1= 5 (on time)
EK 2= 7 (5 mins over time)
Ek 3= 5 (6 mins over time)
EK 4= 6 (10 mins over time)
EK 5= 7 (5 mins over time)
EK 6= 6 (2 mins to spare. Finally!)
EK 7= 6 (one minute over time)
EK 8= 8 (Did only 6 passages)
EK 9= 6 (Had 5 mins to spare...This test contained some twisted passages "Wood finishing", "the Judiciary system", and of course something about "Chinese history")

I'm noticing that my performance is analogous to action potential; all or nothing. If I don't understand the passage, then it's pretty much a guessing game, but if I like it, or at least comprehend it, I tend to correctly answer most of the questions. I also tend to do better on social science, psychology, economy, and natural science passages. Passages related to history, art, religion, and philosophy kill me.

EK 10= 5 🙁 Finished on time though.

got through this book the other day. ended with an average of 9.

just got done with TPR cracking 1 and got an 11 verbal (-6).

took the 5/19/2012 test and got a 6 in VR. i only got one 6 on a FL practice test and it was kaplan's full length #1 (first test i ever took). i bought EK 101 verbal passages after receiving my score and have done 3 verbal tests so far; i did the passages independently while keeping time of each passage and reviewing every question, right and wrong. timing is not an issue and when adding up the times for each passage i still have 5+ minutes remaining. my scores are as follows:

(6/21/2012) warm up: 10/17
(6/26/2012) EK #1: 23/40 (7)
(6/27/2012) EK #2: 26/40 (8)
(6/28/2012) EK #3: 27/40 (8)
(6/29/2012) Kaplan Verbal Test #12: 31/40 (10)
(7/1/2012) EK #4: 34/40 (11) - i like this trend going on 🙂))))))
(7/9/2012) AAMC #3 Verbal: 28/40 (9)
(7/13/2012) EK #5: 24/40 (7) (the ****? all the ones i got wrong were a choice between a vague answer and their supposed "right" answer lol)
(7/14/2012) EK #6: 31/40 (10) (^ was a fluke.. i knew i was getting better at verbal lol)
(7/17/2012) EK #7: 29/40 (9)
(7/18/2012) AAMC #9 Verbal: 31/40 (10)
(7/20/2012) EK #8: 25/40 (7)
(7/22/2012) EK #9: 26/40 (8)
(7/24/2012) AAMC #4 Verbal: 29/40 (9)

I'll update my scores in a couple weeks, as i will be doing some later kaplan verbal section tests and a kaplan full length as well and will be going on vacation for a week (i might bring my EK book with me lol). im training for a 10+ by 8/4/2012 test. good luck fellow mcaters!

EK 1 - 6
EK 2 - 8
EK 3 - 7

:/

I'm running out of time and I have to guess on the last section... that's what's killing me. I really need to get the timing down.

About two months away from my test date.

EK 3-7
EK 4-8
EK 5-7
EK 6-8
EK 7-10

I hope I can see a steady trend of improvement to my test date.

before my test on 5/19 i always finished with about 30 sec left. after the practice i have been doing using EK, i noticed my times have dropped to about 5+ minutes remaining. i find that i only need to go back to the passage when the question specifically asks about a quote or something. what i do is underline (same as highlight i think) pretty much the main points of each paragraph, while actively considering how the passage is set up and the general tone of the author. you really need to get yourself interested in the passages, otherwise it will just be all the more painful to read and result in less retention of detail. another thing i started doing (and by the increase of my scores with each test i think it's working) is mouthing the words; i think it's the same as reading out loud, except it's "reading out silently."

Anyone else think the first couple tests are really hard then get easier so we think that we're improving? Strategic difficulty placement by EK to make them look better?

Dont know what to do with VR....I have tried every technique possible...None of them seem to be working.

An update after a long time:

EK1: 10
EK2: 8
EK3: 7
EK4: 10
EK5: 7
EK6: 8
EK7: 10
EK8: 10
EK10: 10
AAMC3: 12

I was watching TV for the 7s. Not an excuse, but whatever 😀
Mostly listening to something when attempting. Not timed, but I never have any problem finishing on time.
I accidentally skipped EK9 duh. :meanie:

EK9: 8

Seems to be oscillating between 8 and 10...

Test 9 I got a 7 miss the 8 by 1 point but, I think the reason for my decrease was because I have a non stop headache and I stop verbal for abt a a week , since I enrolled in PR verbal accelerator.....the course helps with reading comprehension but not verbal, but the comprehension will help with the sciences.

Here are my scores so far:

EK 1 - 7
EK 2- 8
EK 3- 5 😕
EK 4- 8
EK 5- 9
EK 6- 8
EK 7- 9
EK 8- 7 <--- today's score that has left me very depressed 🙁

I'm seeing no real improvement. I just want to hit that 10 mark and I'll be satisfied. But with these fluctuating scores between 7-9, I am getting extremely discouraged and I don't know how to improve.

My Verbal Strategy is: Spend four minutes reading the passage thoroughly, understanding the authors main idea, and then spend four minutes doing the questions. I try not to look back at the passage unless its a detail oriented retrieval question.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get myself up to the 10 mark? Verbal is so difficult for me 🙁
My MCAT is exactly one month away.

What helped for me was bringing the page/screen close to my face and really focussing (not too close, your eyes will strain). Also, try reading faster. I think It actually sticks better that way. Like 2-3 min per passage. I got a 7,8,7,8,10,10 so far. The improvement to ten was by using the method I just described. Also, just try and read to understand, as if you were really interested. But, I don't think it's good to 'try' to remember.

My scores:

EK 1 - 7
EK 2- 8
EK 3- 9
EK 4- 9
EK 5- 7
EK 6- 9
EK 7- 11
EK 8- 10
EK 9- 9
EK 10- 10

Similar scores for AAMC and Kaplan FLs.

EK1...7 (24)
EK2...6 (21)
EK3 ..8 (26)
EK4...6 (22)
EK5...7 (24)
EK6...9 (28) ...I hope this trend continues.
EK7...6 (21)
EK8...6 (22)

At this point I dont know what to do to increase my VR score....

I have not taken a FL yet but I do 2 passages a day and miss about 2 questions total I take them 6 minutes per passage, I will take a FL and see lol

EK1: 10
EK2: 9
EK3: 11
EK4: 11
EK5: 9
EK6: 8
EK7: 12 (I was so disappointed at the 8, that I furiously did another exam right after, and got a 12, which made me feel better lol)
EK8: 11
Completed on time, although allowed myself one minute overtime if the alarm sounded before I finished the 40th question.

I've definitely noticed a rest-score correlation.

hey Guys, I need some opinions.

what do you think about ek101 passages vs tpr passages? I was doing some aamc #3 and aamc #4 and feel that these passages from Ek are much harder. I felt the tpr matched better at predicting

any discussion on this?

EK2: 11 (34)
EK 3: 10 (31)

I have a few questions for people who've taken a lot of practice. Do scores tend to fall? Is it likely that I've been doing well on these by a fluke or am I likely to continue doing this well?

I looked through, but couldn't really find answers. How do EK scores tend to correlate to AAMC scores? Specifically in the 10-11 range.

Scores tend to rise gently throughout EK101. MCAT vr scores tend to be 1 or 2 points higher than EK101 would suggest via trend. Except the MCAT last month, they got slaughtered.

I just posted above. EK 6 was ridiculous. Good to know I'm not the only one.

Thanks for posting, I'm comforted knowing that others suffered at the hands of EK6. Also, call me impudent, but I would be willing to engage in a publicized debate for the, on average, 1 answer explanation out of 40 (blatant type errors aside) that was totally wrong. Oh well 😛

You did good on your first AAMC, which are tougher than EK IMO.

Hi guys, I have been practicing using the old ek101 book which has 9 passages per. I was wondering if anyone who has both the books can comment on if the passages are different or if I can rely on my score?

Update:
EK1: 10
EK2: 9
EK3: 11
EK4: 11
EK5: 9
EK6: 8
EK7: 12
EK8: 11
EK9: 11
EK10: 11
EK11: 10
EK12:7 SEVEN that's right I said it
EK13: 10
EK14: 7 YAYY SEVEN

Thoughts: take your worst 3 EK101 scores, set them on fire, and throw them into the ocean. They are gone now. These scores do _not_ indicate how you will fare on the real MCAT. Furthermore, EK12 and EK14 were atrocious and riddled with errors. Up to 35% of the answers are simply wrong, and the author is under-qualified. Overall, EK101 verbal was good practice and increased my AAMC written scores by about 1 or 2.

How did you fare on the actual test?

I don't remember what I got on each test, but I remember making 10s on most of them (like the first 8 or so I did were 10s), as well as a couple 11s and a 12 once. Skipped the AAMC practice test verbal sections (only did the science sections for those). Got an 11 on the real thing.

This book was VERY helpful: http://www.amazon.com/Verbal-Reason...343225053&sr=8-3&keywords=examkrackers+verbal

The strategy it goes over REALLY helps. It isn't gimmicky at all. It pretty much solidified my technique, and gave me a lot of confidence (which is half the battle). I highly recommend it.

EK is great for practice but the scores are not accurate. I was consistently getting 3 points higher on AAMCS and Kaplan practice tests than EK.

On the real thing I got what I always got on the AAMCs and Kaplan.

This could be different for everyone so just take practice tests and see how they match up yourself.

so kaplan vr full lengths are accurate?

Question for all of you:

After you're done with an EK passage, do you follow the review method EK suggests (i.e., review the next day using only the questions, the next day, write the main idea, etc)? If not, how do you review your passages?
