I was curious if there was anyone else using these? I took the first one last night at a busy starbucks (to begin to aclimate myself to the "be prepared for anything" test climate) and I got rocked. I scored a 5!! :scared:. Its okay though because I knew verbal was going to be the hardest. I was curious if anyone else using these tests could post their scores and or advice (I know there was a thread a while back, but that was for the April exam and I'm in need of encouragment and advice from the august takers. Thanks

My scores:

EK1: 8
EK2: 9
EK3: 9
EK4: 8 🙁

AAMC3: 11

Does anyone else seem to think the questions on the AAMC tests are easier?

EK1:10
EK2:10
EK3:9
EK4:8
EK5:10
EK6:9
EK7:10
EK8:8
EK9: 10
EK10: 10
EK 11: 8

so far, my AAMC verbal scores have been 10-11. mostly 10s

I like that EK has 14 FL verbal sections all in one place, and its great practice, but I am having some big frustrations with it recently. I have taken 10 of them so far, and scored in the 10-12 on all of them, but I really feel that some of the answer choices are WAY too nitpicky, especially compared to Kaplan or AAMC 3 and 4. Also on the answer explanation section, I have come across multiple errors. One question had all 4 choices labeled "WRONG:"....

So make sure that you don't grade your score using the answer key that just lists the correct answer choices. Go through each question and grade it that way. Test #10 alone had three questions that don't match up from answer key, to answer explanations.

Thanks for the reminder!!!

I think the EK Verbal 101 passages and answer choices are a fair representation of the AAMC verbal section. I do think that EK seems to have many more inference/application questions than the practice AAMC ones do. When I first started taking the AAMC tests, my first impression was that the questions seemed much more straight-forward. It seemed like there were more questions that were more "recall" and less inference. In other words, EK's questions were much more ambiguous.

This soothes me slightly, since I was mostly killed by the ambiguous, inference-type questions of the EK 30-minute exams (which were beasts!). I still managed 9's and 10's on them, but I'd like to bring it up. I'm planning to order 101 Passages this week. I'm hopeful about my future scores, as I've read that the verbal 30-minute exams are on the difficult side.

Alright, so I've been doing some of the passages in the EK 101 book. After struggling a bit with the warm-up and the first three passages (I got a 12 on #2 with a bit of luck, I think) and carefully analyzing the answer explanations, I'm beginning to feel like I'm becoming more familiar with this verbal beast. I just took passage 4, which I executed with much confidence, and I only missed 3 questions, and for all of those, I was debating the answer I picked with the correct answer. I've been consistently finishing with about 2-3 minutes to spare. My scores so far:

Warm- Up: 10
Passage 1: 9 (29/40)
Passage 2: 12 (35/40)
Passage 3: 10 (30/40)
Passage 4: 13 (37/40).

.I'm hoping I can keep it up.

Hi, did anyone else attempted test 13 ....... I found it much more difficult than the previous tests... =.= omg..:xf::xf: feel so discouraged alredy..

I also felt the last few passages in the EK 101 were pretty difficult. A few of my friends also struggled with the last couple of tests but still managed 10+ on their real test.

I'm not sure if any of you have this problem... but MOST of the time, and i mean 80-99% of the time I would understand and comprehend the passages entirely and eliminate 2 of the answer choices...so technically, i always had 50% chance.. yet.. i tend to choose the wrong one........... i am sooooo frustrated... when i look at the answer (without looking at the explanations) I would be like.. WOW.. that's soo obvious...

can someone please tell me what i can do.................... please... overcoming this.. can surely improve my Verbal score by, at least 2 points..... SIGH.

EK5: 11!!!!

Absolutely ecstatic, because I tried a new strategy for this one and it definetly worked. I never listened to the people on here who advised to simply "read the passage and answer the damn questions". I always thought there was some magical trick and I'd paraphrase, underline like crazy, circle every name, etc.. This time I just said "f*ck it, just sit down, read the passages, and answer the questions". No underlining, no circling of keywords, no writing in the margins after each paragraph. This is the first time I've gotten an 11 in Verbal after studying for this test for 2 years. Last year, on the actual MCAT I got a 6. For those struggling, try this method. It might help 👍

yea i tried the same strategy on like the 10th test and shockingly i went up 2 points from basically what i was scoring on all of the passages, minus a few here or there...it may not have been much, but i didn't think there was any way not referring back to the passage would work better

Sometimes I straight up disagree with the answer choice.

On some answers they are super "nit-picky", requiring precision down to the exact definition of a word and how that might be construed in this or that light in the question.

However, on other questions, the author himself is fast and loose with the logic and/or word usage. The word "support" is used to mean simply further discussion of the topic, not necessarily providing an example or reason (i.e. supporting the argument).

There are lots of other examples. I have found questions where a choice is marked CORRECT but the explanation proves it wrong, etc.

It just frustrates me.

(I've been scoring 10-12 avg on these)

Good to see that there are fellow SDNers frustrated by this book's ambiguity. I mean, it's still better than what Princeton and Kaplan have to offer in the sense that the questions are similar to those of the real MCAT, but as others have correctly pointed out, some of the answer choices are too "nitpicky". I've taken two AAMC tests before and got 12 and 11 in their respective verbal sections. Having taken test #1 in EK, I was really disappointed to have gotten an 8. :scared:

I am not saying it's a bad book. It definitely beats the alternatives. But I think the author made it a habit to provide really ambiguous answers in the hope that this would make his book more challenging.

Just took practice test 1. I got an 8. I was very shocked when grading it because I felt very confident and felt like I understood pretty much every passage. Like others, I agree with the ambiguities, but I am going to try to embrace it and use it as a learning tool. Its kind of annoying, but if you are reviewing thoroughly, it will help you see why some answers might be COMPLETELY ruled out due to one small reference in the passage.

I've been working through TPR Hyperlearning verbal workbook, and I feel like these tests are a little different. Its only been 1 EK test, but to me, it seemed like the passages/questions of TPR were more abstract/whole picture/author's view type of questions, while the EK was more relatable/look at language subtleties/nitpicky with contradictions. I felt like the EK test was a lot easier than TPR ones ive been taking, but I got a 8, when I was avergin ~10-11 on TPR. Perhaps studying TPR type of questions hindered my performance and I will need to adapt to this book. I know most people work through one book at a time, but has anybody had any experience with using two books at the same time?

Just took EK1 and got a 7.

Any chances I could get this to a 10 or 11 by August?

I'm reading a long in the Kaplan VR review notes and using their study materials, the EK 101 is just extra practice material, but I'm trying to utilize what I learned from Kaplan in the EK 101 passages. No idea if this will work or not but I'll probably adjust my approach as needed.

I was doing ek reading, but i feel it is relatively easy. I get 10-13 range.
I am doing kaplan blue reading book now. it is more challenging.
also I feel the kaplan practice reading passage they sell at the store is really bad, but the blue book within the course is pretty good.

are the passages in the 2nd edition the same as the first edition?

ie. the second passage in test 2 of (1st editions) is about industrial melanism? and the 3rd passage is about language of law?

i accidentally ordered is the first edition. i want to make sure they are not the same passages before i return this one for the 2nd edition.

thanks!

My friend and I who are using SN2's guide have mutually agreed that after test 7-8ish, the author ran out of good questions and started giving extremely BS ones. The passages are still solid imo. Hopefully the real MCAT won't have ambiguous answers. I always get owned by the ones that have two good answers, but one BETTER answer. I just kick myself and curse the author when I read the explanation about how my answer was included in the correct response but was not the BEST answer. Sigh

At least I'm consistent...kinda. I'm hoping that I can score an 11 on the real deal to meet all Canadian cutoffs. I got a 9 last year in August, so we'll see how my exam goes in June 16th.

I'm finding that I just straight up disagree with some of the answers in these tests though. My AAMC average is about the same as EK, however.

Hey guys,

Took Ek tests 1-5 and got a 6,5,8,7,7 so far. Average is a 6.6. Really worried i am going to screw up the verbal on the real test. Any advice on what I can do? Is Ek 101 really that representative of the AAMC tests? Would really aapreciate some insight from people that have been in my position. I have read alot of the verbal advice that has been offered in the threads. But I just bomb some complex mathematically related/ philosophical type passages. I def. try to read in 2:30-3 mins with 7:30 mins being my average with q's. Some passages take me 8:30.

Thanks!

I think you should get a 10. If you're scoring that on the EK exams, you should be fine.

Also, the last few exams 12-14, are ridiculous. The answers are all very subjective, ambiguous, and crazy. I just used those last passages as practice reading and summarizing the main idea of the passages--I did do some of the q's, but found a majority of them completely off-base.

Don't worry about timing each individual passage. Just make sure you make it through the exams without running out of time. I usually check half-way through (so at about passage 4 you should have about 35 min left) and at passage 7 (8-10 minutes left). I found that when I kept checking after each passage, I freaked out.

They are definitely good practice. AAMC passages are generally less interesting and the questions are a bit more straightforward with less ambiguous answers. EK questions sometimes are very, very subtle.

Is this the same edition as 2002 EK 101 verbal passages because it's designed for the pre-2007 New e-test...so should i still do the passages?

The passages seem long and confusing, which is great practice, but I think they are longer and more questions since it's designed for 60 questions, 85 minutes or so....

Anyways, do they have a new edition out?

EK 1 : 5
EK 2 : 9
EK 3 :10
EK 4 : 9

My first EK verbal was really one of my first attempts at a verbal section. I definitely think it helped me get a feel for the test. Since then i took two practice exams in which i got 9's in verbal. I know ive found a few tricks to look out for in passages and questions but after just taking EK 4, i feel like there are still a few things i can work on. Hoping to bring it up to at least 12, but ill be happy with a 10. Good luck everyone

EK1: 9. Quite disappointed, since I felt quite confident while taking the exam. Some of the correct answers makes sense, after reading the explanation, but others are complete BS. The negative of (A and B) is not (neither A nor B)!

Yeah ive worked my way through test 10 now, and have gotten 12's on ten of the tests an 11 on one then a 9 on test 9 ironically haha. Ive noticed that the answer key sometimes differs from the answer provided in the solutions, has anyone else noticed this? Other wise Im very happy with this book, Im taking a kaplan course right now and while their verbal workbook practices tests are relatively good, their online tests are absolutlely horrible. Lets keep it up!

EK1:7 (23)

EK3:4 (17) ouch...👎
EK4:7 (25)
EK5:6 (20)
EK6:6 (21)
EK7:10 (30) Wow🙂

I guess EK3 and EK7 are flukes...Nice to see that improvement on EK7 though.

EK 5's first passage killed my whole test... got half of my questions wrong from that passage :/.

EK1: 9
EK2: 9
EK3: 10
EK4: 11
EK5: 10

My scores.... (scored a 6 on the real thing last year)

EK 101
1- 7 (not sure what the deal was)
2- 10
3 - 9
4 - 10
5- 10
6- 11
7- 10
8 - 10
9 - 10
10 - 11

can't seem to get over that 10-11 mark, but I'll be thrilled if I hit that on the real deal next week

I've pretty much gotten only 11's and 12's on them, hopefully this matches up to the real thing. Personally, I find the TPR verbal more challenging than the EK. I have only taken 2 full lengths so far, got a 9 on verbal the first time (aamc 3) (I didn't pay attention to time and missed a full passage) and then the second test (aamc 4) a 12.

I know EK does not want you to go back to passage to look for answers and focus on main idea. It seems like I miss 2 or 3 questions because I did not go back and looked for it in passage. Do you guys go back to passage and look for answers?

Sorry if this question has been beat to death before, but here goes: are the EK Verbal tests considered to be harder than actual MCAT Verbal sections? Is it (kind of) generally accepted that, say, an 8 on an EK101 Verbal test would correspond to about a 9 or a 10 on the real thing?

I'm asking because I've taken a couple of Kaplan verbal sections and one EK101 section (EK 10), and received a 10 on the EK section while receiving 11's on the Kaplan. Raw score-wise, I definitely did better on Kaplan. Would you guys say that, say, a 10 on EK 101 Verbal tests would corresopnd to about a (possible) 11 or 12ish on the real thing?

your scores look like mine-ish... fo rth EK's at least.. I was hoping the AAMCs would be easier. Haven't done them yet, but will do soon. I'm taking mine on the 18th.

Yo ! whats up everyone, I was hoping I could get some help because I have the old version (EK 101 verbal from 2002)

I pretty much have split the 11 tests that were in the old 60 question 85 minute format to the new 40 question 60 minute 14 test format but this is what I do, so please tell me if this is ok and if my scores would thus be accurate or not:

Ive been using the 7 passages sequentially, starting from EK verbal test 1 (Lab driaze test) and this usually comes up to about 46 questions..so I cross off the 4th question in some passages that have 7 questions and then the 3rd question in some passages that have 6 questions..and total it up to 40 questions. My scores have been :

EK 1 (used only 6 passages by mistake)= 27/39
EK 2 (starting from Dr. ebbinhaus passage) (didnt cut questions)= 31/46
EK 3 = 6 (22/40)
Ek 4= 7 (24/40)
Ek 5= 9 (27/40)
Ek 6 = 10 (30/40)
Ek 7= 10 (30/40)
Ek 8= 8 (25/40)
Ek 9= 7 (24/40)

the last passage in my EK 9 was the scraper vs. sandpaper passage

Any suggestions or help as to whether this is fine or not would be great! Thanks.

Did you expect this on the actual test? IE-Did the real test seem easier than EK?

Just wondering because my EK scores are basically verbatim up through test 11 (havent taken 12, 13, 14 yet.) and I need the extra confidence.

Also, to the person who asked if you went back to the passage...YES. EK 101 seems impossible if you don't. They're testing so many minute details in some of them you can't help it.

Sometimes I don't though, and breeze through some of the passages that I find to be funny/interesting (ie- the pimp/prostitute one, the ebonics one and a few others.) If only the real test had things this engaging, and not on computers and gothic art. :l

I wouldn't say the VR on my actual MCAT was easier but I did feel "confident" about a 11-12 coming out of it.

I finished EK 101 before starting the AAMC's and so my AAMC scores were more indicative of my real score (I was scoring 11s and 12s on the AAMC VRs, never a 13 though.)

So if you're getting the same scores as I did on EK, I suggest you finish up EK and move on to the AAMCs to get a good idea of where you stand.

Good luck! :luck:
