I was curious if there was anyone else using these? I took the first one last night at a busy starbucks (to begin to aclimate myself to the "be prepared for anything" test climate) and I got rocked. I scored a 5!! :scared:. Its okay though because I knew verbal was going to be the hardest. I was curious if anyone else using these tests could post their scores and or advice (I know there was a thread a while back, but that was for the April exam and I'm in need of encouragment and advice from the august takers. Thanks

wait till u get to test 10-14, every passage is a hard passage...it was ridiculous...i went from 10-11 to 7 and 8

i started out at 11's and 12's for the first 8 tests, but since then i've been scoring 10's (with the exception of one 11 on test 10).

i honestly don't know if i'm improving or not haha...i guess the book is able to keep me on my verbal game leading up to the test though

oh man, i did EK 11 today and i hit a 10, and barely too. I honestly think if it wasn't for a few lucky guesses it would've easily been a 9. I liked EK 10 though, it wasn't too difficult, but is it just me or there are A LOT of mistakes on the answer key, not the explanation just the key.

I've taken EK 1-4 and have gotten straight 11s, but the EK's don't seem much like the AAMC.
The questions EK asks are strange, and so is their reasoning sometimes. I wouldn't bother going over EK missed questions. And the passages are simpler to read and process than AAMC passages. The content just seems much more dense and difficult to comprehend on the AAMC.

Maybe EK 10-14 is different.

EK VR 101 is just good practice material -- not a very good score indicator. The AAMC's are much better (actually, the best) score indicators.

I think EKs are harder than the real test. I can't say for sure yet, but on EK I was averaging around a 9 or 10 on most exams. When I moved on to AAMC practice exams I was extremely consistent on getting 11s on every practice test, save for one, which was a 10.

EK has a LOT of ambiguous and weasel questions. Up to 40% of the exam can consist of those types of questions which really helps nail down the real MCAT questions, since 20% or so of VR has these weasel/ambiguous questions.

i really hope its a good indicator...i've been hitting 10-12s, which were about the same as the AAMC tests i took in may/june. my test was 6'16 and i was one of the very lucky few who scored abysmally low it would make any person cry

for both tests 4 and 5 i was on par to score a 12 and then two flipping passages threw me off

soooooo flipping annoying!!!! i missed 7 questions on two passages more than what i missed combined on the other 5 passages GAHHHHHH!!!!!!! am i the only one experiencing this?

test 4 - 10
test 5 - 9
test 6 - 11

**** this book sometimes. So many typos and ****, during the introductory 3 passages there were so many typos in the answers I thought I got like a 2, but got a 9. The ****?

I'm between 7 and 10 for all of them; got a 31/40 on 14.

This is a funny book. I am scoring 13-15 on TPR and AAMC verbals yet I am barely breaking 10s (if not lower) on these.

Still good practice though..

When I took the first 8 practice tests from the EK 101 book, this was my trend:

#1: 7
#2: 10
#3: 6
#4: 9
#5: 8
#6: 6
#7: 10
#8: 9

I kept fluctuating weirdly. Might be because I took all 8 of these every day for 8 days RIGHT before my MCAT in Sept. 2009 (I was pressed on time.) My average was an 8. I got an 8 on the real thing.

Gonna take the remaining now + some TPR for my retake. I really think EK 101 was a good indicator because it's average was exactly the score I got on the real thing. Yeah the real MCAT is longer, but this really gauged my skills (which were hard to improve in just 8 days of practice). But if you use it for how it should be - over the course of a few weeks, it should be pretty good.

Meh..

1.) 10
2.) 7
3.) 9
4.) 9
5.) 8
6.) 8
7.) 10
8.) 11
9.) 9
10.) 9

4 more to go. Average was 9. Took AAMC #4R and got a 9 on that also.

Aiming for 10-11 on the real deal. 4 weeks to go. LEGGOOOO.

Anyone using EK find the explanations helpful? I have been taking the tests, and saw that my score are decreasing
test 3: 8
test 4: 7
test 5: 5

Would it help to go over verbal explanations?

What's the point of practicing if you don't go over why you made mistakes?

If you're going to do that for PS/BS why wouldn't you do it for verbal?

Meh..

1.) 10

looks like we got a similar trend going on here. Passages from 9 and beyond are a bit ridiculous; usually for their explanations make sense and I actually see why one answer is better than the other. Recently, its just like wtf?

2 - 10
3 - 11
4 - 10
5 - 8
6 - 9
7 - 10
8 - 11
9 - 9
10 - 9
11 - 7

starting to get pretty frustrated with this.

Except for the first few, I've been getting between a 9-10 on every one up until 9. I'm starting to lower back to 9, but I'm hoping to bring it back up to a 10+ with the last few that I have.

EK1...24/40 = 7
EK2...21/40 = 6 ...With 50 days left, I dont know if I will ever get that verbal score up to a 9.

Did you just start doing verbal?

My first two EK 101 tests were 6, 7 and now I am scoring consistent 11's with 50 days to go. Find a strategy that works and stick to it! Don't get discouraged!

What was your major in B.S? Your MCAT score and Ogranic i and ii grade? sorry but I got C in organic i and two B so far very worried that's why asking you. Any hope and just die without colpleting dream to be doctor.

Took EK 12 and got a 9 again 29/40. Pretty damn frustrating since I screwed up a math problem and flip flopped on another. I didn't even have a hard time reading the passages, it's the questions part now.

EK3 ..26/40 = 8....Would be thrilled if my score is 8 on the real stuff. Got 4 and 5 on AAMC4 and AAMC5 practice tests. I dont know why my AAMCs are so low in comparison to EK

So far for me:

1: 10
2: 9
3: 10
4: 12
5: 11
12: 11
13: 10

My diagnostic VR score was a 9. Aiming for a 12 on the real thing. We'll see about that, though. 🙂

make sure you dont just go by the answer key. look at the explanations to see if they match. some of them dont

averaging a 9.5 through the first 8

10.4 u mad?

Just kidding. But yes, sometimes the answer keys are wrong (go to the EK website for the errata).

1) 7
2) 10
3) 10
4) 11
5) 11

AAMC 3 score was an 8. Pretty happy with the improvement so far. Goal = 12. Would be ecstatic with an 11 on the real deal though.

EK 1) 5....I accidentaly selected the wrong answer for two of the questions, but I am glad that I was able to finish on time.

BTW, how beneficial is it to go over the answer key?

VERY beneficial. I even go over my right answers sometimes. Good luck.

wow so many mistakes in EK 10. but the passages are interesting- pimps and street walkers, ebonics, war crimes, stock markets... im afraid theyre actually a bit too interesting vs the lame stuff about philosophy or the victorian times

I suck at the philosophy passages, the double negatives and weird language trips me up lol!

EK1: 6
EK2: 8
EK3: 8 (barley)
Hopefully I can improve and not go backwards lol

Back at it again.... I am doing EK 101 until I start my PR verbal accelerator course in late June.....Theses score are added up, I usually do 1-2 passages at a time, I do time myself I do abt 1 passage in abt 8-9 mins... which is great because I plan on guessing on my last verbal passage on the real mcat.. I never took the entire test all together for 60 mins.

Warm-up-5
Test 1-5
Test 2-6
Test 3-8
Test 4-6
Test 5-7
In the midst of test 6 I have a 20/29 so far.... tomorrow I will post my score.
Got an 8 last passage was brutal... I was I glanced at the questions before reading... most of the questions were a quote from a passage... if I glance at the question before hand all I would og done was read questions first then refer back to passage.

My improvement in my current test 6... come from reading the answers...

When you read the answers... read why your answer was wrong and read why the correct answer is the correct answer also, write down the types of questions you are getting wrong ( point of view, tone, refer back to passage, etc) and why you think you got the answer wrong and what you can do to prevent the mistake next time.

I concur.

My only beef with EK Verbal is that their passages are too short and too interesting. If you think these variables don't matter, you're wrong. I specifically recall an EK passage about a radical economic policy, under which, for example, a woman who has been raped would be fined since she is partially responsible for it. 😱 Needless to say, I was very interested. Something like that would NEVER be on the real thing.

So what do you suggest?

the only full test I've done so far were 4 and 5. I got a 12 and a 7, respectively. I think 4 was on the easy side and 5 was on the harder side. the other passages were in combination 8- 10's. Is this typical to see such a wide range? I was feeling pretty good after 4 but today after i took 5 i was a little discouraged.

QUICK QUESTION GUYS!

I just got the book EK 101 Verbal and I'm taking the mcats next year/summer. Should I not touch this book until around that time?

And for the people that tell me to start on it right away...if I do start on it now I won't actually be able to test myself with this book next year because I'm going to be familiarized with it already.

So what should I do?

For now just start reading random news articles, journals or w.e online, even if you have NO interest in the subject... it will help you learn to read faster and read material that is boring. Your brain will usually block out anything it finds to be boring so by practicing reading things that don't interest you, you will be able to tackle these types of passages during the real thing. I suggest reading 1 article a day! typical verbal passage is around 60-80 lines so basically a 1page article. I wish I had known this tip earlier, I would have done just that. But It was taught to me a little late in the game

EK2...6 (21)
EK3 ..8 (26)
EK4...6 (22)
EK5...7 (24)

Should I ****ing give up? I am starting to get discourage with VR...

im taking a break from this book to focus from the passages in the TPR and AAMC FLs. Saving the last 3 EK 101 tests for the last month. Its probably a good idea to mix it up- EK, TPR, AAMC, BR, Kaplan to make sure you dont get too used to a particular company's style
