I was curious if there was anyone else using these? I took the first one last night at a busy starbucks (to begin to aclimate myself to the "be prepared for anything" test climate) and I got rocked. I scored a 5!! :scared:. Its okay though because I knew verbal was going to be the hardest. I was curious if anyone else using these tests could post their scores and or advice (I know there was a thread a while back, but that was for the April exam and I'm in need of encouragment and advice from the august takers. Thanks

I do go back to the passage often, even to re-read a section that I think is relevant for a particular question. Usually I have an idea of where to look, which makes things run a little more smoothly.

Ok so guys I tested out a theory today. I did EK #2 today undertimes conditions and I used ONLY the main idea to answer questions. Note I used only what I perceived to be the main idea to answer all the question without necessarily going back to the passage. I finished with 16 minutes left and I got a 7. I did not look at what answers I got wrong. I took an hour break and came back and did the same test but this time, I used the main idea to answer only main idea and tone questions while going back to the passage ( really fast) to answer most of the other questions. I got a 10!!!! with barely a minute left.

So my question is for those getting a 9 and above do you go back to the passage often or your brain just seems to absorb all the info. Please y'all let me know what you think. Thanks a million in advance.

I don't think you should be testing out your theories on the same test. Think about it: when you do it the first time, all the passages are fresh in your mind. when you take it the second time, it'll be your second time reading through the passages. your comprehension will be better and you will read a lot faster. add in the fact that you actually went back to the passages to quickly double-check your answers and it's no wonder you got a higher score on that one. Try out your theories on two DIFFERENT tests.

I took my first of the EK Verbal tests today and scored a 5! I have A LOT of work to do..

Did any of you start with similar scores? If so, were you able to improve to 10+ ? What did you do to improve? Just more EK tests? I take the MCAT 3/28/09 and I am a bit worried.. Please help.

Thanks.

My first one was 6 and then:
EK2: 7
EK3: 9
EK4: 9
EK5: 8
EK6: 10 (one point away from 9)
I am only doing 1 passage a week though, so this may be hurting me and also english is my second language. For the first two, I run out of time before finishing one or more of the passages (so I guessed). Right now a barely finish on time, but at least I finish. You shouldn't get discouraged if you got a 5 on the first one, keep practicing and you will improve over time. I think the EK passages are a little harder until you get use to the format/lenght. I have taken a couple of AAMC verbals several months ago, and my scores were like 9, 11, and 10(if I remember correctly).

EK 1: 10
EK 2: 11

Yay I got one more right the 2nd time...🙄

A big part of this is confidence for me. I never read for pleasure...I only read textbooks. Surprisingly, I don't suck at verbal...I don't get it. I'm by no means good or skilled at it...but the fact I am not sucking is awesome. I would jump for joy with a 10 on this section

One PASSAGE a week? or one TEST? I would do 3-4 passages from other sources a day and then take 2 EK tests.

So I always get these metaphor questions wrong. For example, TEst 2 #46 or Test 4 #22

How common are these types of questions on the real thing?

** the test and question numbers match up to the older version of EK 101**

Thanks!!!

I just started EK 101 and got an 8 on my first 85min test. Where else do you all get tests? I'm cautiously taking practices because I dont want to run out, nor spend tons of money on numerous more books.

I'm improving!!! After months of frustration, I finally feel like I'm getting somewhere. I was consistently getting 8's and 9's, but today I got an 11 (on test 4). 😀

I completed the book and I took the MCAT for the second time on 1/31/09. I feel the book really improved my verbal skills and I was able to understand passages better and look through them more effectively. I feel all the practice also helped me in Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences.

So do you guys follow the book exactly? I heard something about waiting a day before checking answers and doing questions without reading the passage and stuff. I haven't gotten there yet. Just finished the warm up yesterday. Any advice on that stuff?

ehh

EK1: 8
didn't work on it for a month
EK2: 10 (did 3 passages one night and four another)
EK3: 7! 🙁

I know i have eight exams left.... i dont know what to do🙁 my test is in march!

One PASSAGE a week? or one TEST? I would do 3-4 passages from other sources a day and then take 2 EK tests.

I meant one Test a week. I will also try to do two-three passages each week from a different source (Kaplan or TPR) because i dont feel like I am getting enough practice.

I did all the passages in the EK Verbal 101 book untimed. I started preparing right before New Year's and I took my exam on January 31st. I did one exam a night and checked all the answers one by one, answer choice by answer choice. I made sure to look at why answers were wrong and checked to see if my reasoning was correct on the ones I got right.

I did 12 of the 14 exams throughout winter break, and I saved the last 2 exams (14 passages) for the last two weeks before the exam. I did a passage or two a night of these exams since my classes had started. In the last week, I only did the verbal sections of the AAMC exams in the afternoons for a hour each day between classes and some EK passages at night. I was finished with all the EK exams and AAMC verbal exams by the Thursday before the exam. I took Friday off and relaxed by watching Family Guy and The Simpson's Movie. If you can, watch Family Guy or something that you are into the night before. It will really take your mind off the exam and will calm your nerves. When the verbal section came up, I was relaxed and my mind was focused.

I hope this helps. Good luck! 🙂

I am completely stuck at 10. I can't go higher, though I've gotten a few 9's. I hope I pay EXTRA attention on test day, so I can recall stuff better!

I think I'm stuck at 10 w/ EK. I find some of their explanations debatable, but I'm probably just trying to find excuses. I usually finish with about 2 minutes to spare. I pre-read for quotes in the questions and I work in sequence from passage 1-7 not skipping. Any advise for those of you who broke from 10 to getting consistent 11 and 12s?

EK1: 10 Raw: 31
EK2: 10 Raw: 30
EK3: 11 Raw: 33
EK4: 10 Raw: 30
EK5: 10 Raw: 30
EK6: 8 Raw: 27 (tired)
EK7: 10 Raw: 32
EK8: 9 Raw: 29
EK9: 10 Raw: 30

EK CBT Version

EK1: 7
EK2: 8
EK3: 10
EK4: 11

Wow! I really hope this improvement continues. I have never been a verbal person, 590V on the SAT and last book I read for fun was Harry Potter....

The EK method seems to really work as well as CAREFULLY reading the questions to make sure what it is exactly asking for.

Apparently there is an MCAT god who wants me to get into med school!

EK2: 8
EK3: 10
EK4: 11
That's awesome dude, hope the trend continues. I'm stuck at 10! I took EK Exam 10, and got a 10, missing about 4 outta the 5 or 6 questions on the very FIRST passage. I was like "...well, there goes my 10." Somehow I rocked every other passage after that to make up for the first one. Detail questions KILLLLLL me!

so i am re-taking the test in the middle of april, and have finished the whole kaplan verbal book, and did 3 tests in the TBR verbal book. I just today started on EK 101, bc i wanted to save these for last since i heard they are the best. I was doing pretty well on berkeley review, and i just did the first 3 sample passages in EK, and DID HORRIBLE. I mean 9/17 wrong 🙁. I am now worried i wont have enough time to improve for the test in april. The last time i took my mcat (in sept), i was getting consistent 8's on almost every single test...whether it be kaplan or aamc. I really want to get a solid 10, but after doing these first three...i am feeling a little hopeless. Do you guys think i will have enough time to see an improvement? I figured since there are only 14 exams in the book, it can't really be spread out to an extremely long period of time bc i want to take each test with real test taking conditions (instead of doing three passages here, and a couple there).

Don't panic! It's normal to score low on the first passages. I scored 6 on the first EK verbal test and now I am up to 10. Just start taking EK verbals under timed conditions and your score will improve. Do you run out of time? This was my problem, I had to guess on at least seven questions in the beginning, but after I took ten of the EK tests, I only have to smethimes guess on ~2 questions. So, don't worry you have enough time to practice and improve your score.
As far as Kaplan verbal goes, did you find it helpfull? I just did a Kaplan test and got a 7! Since you have taken the MCAT, did you find Kaplan or BR to be close to the real thing?

Thanks for the feedback! This may sound strange...but the whole mcat itself seems like a blur to me! i dont know how people leave the test and remember so many details...but what i DO remember is that it was much harder than the aamc practice exams. Also, the TBR verbal has good passages...they are a good length, but a lot of the questions seem different than aamc's questions. There is more of "what was the authors intent" or "what would weaken this assertion" in the aamc exams and TBR seems to focus more on little details in the passage. I think kaplan's questions are better in that sense, bc they have more "critical thinking" applied to the passage type of questions. I also think kaplan's passages were extremely hard though...but i scored the same on their passages and on all my aamc exams. I think their scale makes up for it bc you can miss more on their full-lengths

It kind of scares me that Kaplan verbal somewhat represents the actual MCAT because I am doing much better on the EK than Kaplan. I find Kaplan's passages and questions very difficult because often I cannot understand the meaning (English is my second language). The funny thing is that I once got a 12 on the Kaplan verbal (test three in the Kaplan verbal book), which I think was a totl fluke.
Anyway, I am also taking the MCAT in April (24th), so hopefully we can defeat it  Good luck!

Any suggestions for getting out of a verbal plateau? I want to reach at least a score of 10 but I'm stuck at 8. I even go back and do post-game analysis on my test but still have the same score on my last three practice test. Please help!

How many practice verbal tests have you taken, and what was your first score? Do you run out of time? If you started with 6/7 I think you should be able to go up to 10 by the time you finish the EK book. As far as strategy goes, there is really no one strategy for VR. You should definitely go over all answers (right and wrong) of each EK exam and see if you make the same type of mistakes (e.g. theme identification, "all of the following except" type of questions, etc). If you do, then try to identify these types of questions next time. Also, you can try and do several passages at a time from other sources, just so you can get more practice, but save at least a couple of EK's for a week or two before the actual exam.

I LOVE THE 101 VERBAL. I think it is helping sooo much! I feel a lot more confident each time...
1-7
2-9
3-11

maybe it will just keep going up!! haha if only it worked like that...

So far Ive done 2 kaplan verbal test from their verbal edge book. Ive also done EK 101 Test #1-7. (old version) I started out with a 4 and I've gotten 8's on the last 3 EK test Ive taken. I'll try to go back and exam what types of questions I'm getting wrong. I wish they would say what kind of question they are asking in the answer key.

hey guys,
I am thinking of buying the EK 101 for Verbal but I have only two months left before my MCAT, do you think that would be enough time to improve SIGNIFICANTLY with EK? I tried their method of understanding the passages/etc but I have problem with unfamiliar passages and timing.. I have access to all the kaplan verbal stuff but they dont seem to help very much.. the first time I took the mcat I ended up with a 4 🙁 (I was averaging 4-7 in my practices) this time I decided I need to hit 9-10 easily to go in with confidence as verbal is my biggest challenge.. for those of you studying with EK what was your original score? how long did it take you to improve by couple points? and how does your score in the AAMC FL compare with the EK?

also does EK have computer based practice tests or is it all on paper?

if you have any advise to improve on verbal I would love to hear it, Thanks 🙂

It's definitely great practice, and that's the best thing for verbal. Practice practice practice. I'm still working on mine and my test is on 3/28. I think it's helpful.

On the AAMCs I was getting 8s and 9s, and on EK #4 I got 11. Then I took Kaplan #3 and got a 12. I really don't know what to attribute it to--something just clicked. Maybe it was the EK. Who knows...

Just took EK11: got a 10. I keep getting 10's, but this time it was 32/40, not 30/40 like the last 4 tests. So maybe I can break a 10 on test 12!

ugh..

got a 6 on the EK Verbal Passage 1 🙁

Was hoping to come in here and find some confirmation that others did the same but it seemed most people scored higher. I need to read a little faster and figure out a way to not start daydreaming during dull passages. I barely made the time limit; my alarm started ringing while I was on the last question.

Was sooo tempted to give myself a few extra points because on about 5 questions I had narrowed down 2 choices and picked the wrong one. Then there were quite a few that when I saw the correct answer I felt like an idiot but that wouldn't give an accurate score. I think I'm going to go through the actual verbal book now before I take another from practice from the 101 book.

Don't sweat it too much. Since this is your first verbal exam, you will learn a lot about how to take the test as you practice and how to choose answers on a "gut instinct" when you've narrowed them down. I have been practicing for a few months now and still have a hard time finishing on time, so you're already well on your way to a good score with some practice.

1- 5
2- 7
3- 9
4 - 10
5 - 7
6- 6

My scores are going back down 🙁. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong now... My exam is on 3/28 so I'm starting to get worried. I feel like I either understand the passage or I don't. What do you guys do for passages that are hard for you to read?

I'm doing a mix of Kaplan and EK. I have done 5 Kaplan Verbal (online) tests to get used to the online format and 2 EK tests so far out of 101. Kaplan scores are 8, 8, 10, 11, 10 and EK are 6(ouch), 10. Really tough to put myself over the 10 mark on both but I find the Kaplan tests easier (although my scores don't really reflect it). My goal is to get up to consistent 12's and 13's on verbal, which I think is possible because I am usually getting only my marked questions wrong - which to me signals that I am not making a ton of stupid mistakes.

I got rid of the Kaplan method on verbal after the first couple tests. I found that I was spending too much time trying to translate the main topic and purpose of the passage even though I had a good idea of it already in my head. I tried to translate this over to EK and got crushed on my first EK test which definitely have a different flavor from Kaplan.

I do everything timed. Even Kaplan quizzes and section tests in other subjects, because time is a huge factor in this test and I don't think you can safely ignore it up to a certain point and then introduce it to your studying.

I bought the EK 1001 Verbal because I heard that people score worse in EK compared to the actual exam. I figured, I'd rather do a lot better than expected than a lot worse.

I wrote my first EK exam last week and scored a 9. I was really surprised because I am typically very good at verbal; on my GRE, I scored 730 and I was consistently scoring 790/800s on my practice tests.

I think the actual difficulty of EK is not due to the actual type of questions; it is because the questions are written so AMBIGUOUSLY and could clearly have more than one answer supported by the passage. The GRE required a lot of reasoning for me, but the answer choices still seemed clear. Not so with EK. I am going to write an AAMC exam and see how my verbal compares-i think that will give me a good idea of whether EK is useful for me or not.

Ditto to what you said!
I hate reading... but I'm not sucking on these

EK1: 9
EK2: 10

you're beating me by one point though which is frustrating. haha

EK5 - 9
EK6 - 9
EK7 - 9
EK8 - 10
EK9 - 10
EK10 - 10
EK11 - 10
EK12 - 9

Geez, stuck at the 9, 10, zone still. I went over my time today on exam 12. I tend to do really bad on the first 2 passages, then rock it for the rest of the 5. Like, 3 wrong on each of the first 2 passages, then 1 or 2 wrong for the rest every time.

I keep getting 32 as a raw score on both EK and AAMC! (i've taken 2 each, all four of them 32's!) But on EK that's a 10 and on AAMC it's an 11 🙂

Still though it's annoying me that I can't break past it . . . oh well, still have 12 EKs and 6 AAMCs to go. i just hope it doesn't start dropping. i feel like i have the 'technique' down, i don't know what else to do. except keep practicing i guess. hooray.

I started the 101 series last week.

EK1: 9 raw (44/60)

Quick questions.
1. Does anyone "do the ek method" (review Qs and As, Main Idea, retake test w/o reading passage etc) on every single passage? I'm reviewing 1-2 passage in that manner due to time issues.

2. Does anyone have the "Official Raw Score Conversion Chart" for the 1st Ed. I made my own by using similar percentages based on the 2nd Ed Score Chart. (I've also search this site for it).

Thanks

The chart is on page 462 of your EK 101 passages book. It's hard to find, but it's there.

EK1- 7
EK2- 9
Ek3- 9
Ek4- 11
...

very happy about the trend right now 😀... I would have had a 12 on the 4th test, but I went over the time limit by 2 minutes... so I marked my last three questions wrong

If my scores remain at 11, I'll be more than happy... I got an 8 the first time I took the MCAT, but I used the Kaplan mapping strategy and always ran out of time, I also barely reviewed any verbal outside of timed CBTs, so I'm hoping that my score really can improve to an 11 this time around... DON'T USE KAPLAN for verbal, it makes people do worse, especially if you have issues with pacing ...

I'm just worried because the EK4 seemed easy relative to the other three... and everyone's grades seem to be higher for that one, I hope it's not just an inflated test

EK1:7
EK2:8
EK3:9
EK4:9
EK5:5 WTF? My score was steadily increasing! I'm depressed! LOL

#5 = confidence killer

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, my book ends at pg# 461!! D#*$ it!!

I got I from a friend so I should complain too much. I'll really appreciate it if you could post or pm me the score sheet.

Many thanks in advance!!! 😀😀

30-33 = 6
27-29 = 5

Yes.

I have the 2002 edition. It is the 101 Verbal that was designed for the paper exam. The old exam had 9 passages and 60 questions rather than 7 passages and 40 questions.

I'm just too cheap to buy the new one, because the content is probably roughly the same. The poster that I was responding to stated that he had the first edition, which means that his/her tests also have 60 questions.

60 = 15
58-59 = 14
56-57 = 13
53-55 = 12
49-52 = 11
45-48 = 10
41-44 = 9
37-40 = 8
34-36 = 7
30-33 = 6
27-29 = 5
24-26 = 4
20-23 = 3
16-19 = 2
<16 = 1

Thanks a lot, I appreciate it.

I see you got the EK VR Method down tight from you critical reading skills, pg 462 should be on the other side of 461 right? Right. However the book I got from my friend is not the "official published text" somehow the final page (462) is missing.

Once again many thanks.

Ha ha. Nice. I'm a big fan of "unofficial" texts. 😀

No sweat.

I think it has become an addiction for me. I may be ripe for some 12 Steps program or something 😀😀.

By the way, does anyone incorporate Logical reasoning, critical thinking concepts into their VR study, if so have you notice any improvement after starting this.

I picking an LSAT review book and it's pretty good for these techniques - helps to spot fallacies, unreasonable leaps of logic, baseless and implied assumptions, inferences etc.

EK1:7
EK2:8
EK3:9
EK4:9
EK5:5 WTF? My score was steadily increasing! I'm depressed! LOL

#5 = confidence killer

I feel you kmcgrath, I just took EK5, and got a 9, granted that it is not that low, but it is still lower than my EK4, and I honestly thought most of the passages and questions were the wtf type... I went over the time limit by 5 minutes (which would mean a scaled score of 7 if I factor in time)

anyone else thought test 5 was a killer?

I actually got a 10 on EK #5, then a 9 on EK 6....i have to agree though, some of the questions i seriously dont see coming up on the MCAT, but o well, its practice.
