i'm currently enrolled in a post-bacc program and have the option of exempting from histology next year as a first year. just wondering if you all thought this would be a good idea, as it would allow for more time/energy for other courses, of if it would be detrimental to things like studying for the boards or helping supplement material with other classes. i was not sure how much of the material from histology was tested on step I, so anyone who could fill me in would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Do what you want. However, it will probably be an easy course, meaning an easy A. Also, if it isn't in there, either they will use your postbac grade or simply remove it, making every other course count incrementally more in your GPA.

i had the exact same option and i chose to use the exemption. it has not proven detrimental to me yet in any other classes and i don't think it ever will be. at my school, microanatomy was actually the most difficult course of first semester, so i'm really glad i skipped it. it's probably one of the most useless courses in med school, so weigh your options. free time is nice...

I don't think it would be detrimental for the boards. You're essentially taking the same course correct, just a year ahead of schedule? Step I focuses mainly on pathophysiology and other (traditionally) second-year courses.

yes, just at a different school. i contacted the professor of the course where i am matriculating several months ago and, based on the syllabus i sent him, had the exemption approved. therefore i assumed i would not be missing too much, just wanted to see what current students had to say about it. thanks for the input.

I would definitely skip histo. Nothing in the world could possibly motivate me to go through the class twice. From what I understand, its not really a high-yield class for boards. It sets the background for pathology, and fills in a few of the gaps from physiology and anatomy, but doesnt have a whole lot of clinical relevance in and of itself. Skip that class and use that time to keep one of your outside interests alive 👍

Definitely take the exemption. You will thank yourself later when you have that much more time on your hands.

Take the exemption. Histology is the bane of my existence.

I'm with McNinja on this one. I actually depend on the pace to keep me from slacking. If you did well, then it will be easy (and you can goon your classmates 😀 j/k).

I'm a pre-med student still but I wouldn't retake the class. Since you probably did well enough the first time, you probably won't gain much (if anything) new the second time around. I'd say use that extra time you won't put in histo towards your other classes/extra activities/sleep/etc. Even if histo will be easy, you probably still have to put some effort into the class.

When I was a college freshman, some of my classmates wanted to repeat classes that they got AP credits for because they thought it would be a good GPA booster. However, I figure if I did well enough on the exam, it's not worth the time/effort to redo the class.

good luck.
