exercise

I am more convinced than ever that exercise is overrated for weight loss. Typical exercise isn't really going to build muscles...sure it'll help you get healthy and get you toned..and don't get me wrong, I exercise.

But exercise makes you hungry and you feel justified to eat. So you'll most likely not lose weight.

Your body is like a bank. You put money in it without taking it out, the money will stay and the bank account wont shrink. Start withdrawing more than you deposit, the account will start to shrink. And the Bank really won't care if you deposit coins, checks, or bills...

Simply take in less calorie than the body uses, you'll lose weight.

It's really that simple y'all.

oh I agree, diet is where it's at. I've cut out any and all fried potatoes 🙁 that makes me sad.

I've definitely upped my salad intake, but it's a long hard road ahead of me.

Or just get lipo.

Lipo won't really give me sexy arms/shoulders.

I'm in a wedding in September and have another to go to in New Orleans in OCtober. I think those are reasonable goals.

LOL..that aint what I said yo.

You can eat fried potatoes...but if you only intake about 1000 calories a day and your body uses 1,500 calories per day? You'll lose 1lb a week.

It aint what you eat...it's how much. Hell...eat a stick of butter everyday (how many calorie is that?)...and if it's less calorie than your body uses, you'll lose weight.

I know. But if I cut out particularly high calorie things, I can eat more of others.

I understand portion control, I just like eating.

Losing weight is all about losing fat while still retaining your muscle. It requires 4 things in no specific order:

1. Motivation
2. The correct eating habits
3. Aerobic exercise
4. Weight training

I gained like 20lbs in undergrad and I have recently taken the last 3 months to lose it. I recommend reading Burn the Fat Fuel the Muscle. Easily one of the best books for people starting out and not sure what to do. If anyone wants a copy send me a PM and I can hook you up.

While losing weight is essentially calories in/calories out, it does matter what you eat. Also, while starving yourself on 1000 calories may seem like the best way, it is in no way a realistc way to live the rest of your life and it will kill your metabolism. Most people find that actually eating more will give them the energy to actually get off their butt and exercise.

Oh yea? So what will contribute to more weight loss..1000 calories of fat or 1000 calories of protein or 1000 calories of sugar?

Also, while starving yourself on 1000 calories may seem like the best way,

You don't think 1,000 calories a day is bad for females?

it is in no way a realistc way to live the rest of your life and it will kill your metabolism.

Who's talking rest of your life? You do enough to lose the fat...then increase the daily caloric intake to maintain the weight.

Most people find that actually eating more will give them the energy to actually get off their butt and exercise.

Is that right... I alway feel lethargic and sleepy after I eat more.. I guess I'm the exception not the rule.

You are correct. It is calories in/ calories out. I guess I am saying you will be healthier. Like if you ate 1800 calories a day of chicken breast/veggies or you decided to eat a pound of sugar which has 1800ish.

You don't think 1,000 calories a day is bad for females?

It is different for everyone. 1,000 caloreis a day will be alright for like a 120lb chick that does no exercise. For healthy weight loss, around a 500 calorie deficiet a day. So yea round 1100 may be alright for a chick getting close to her target weight. If someone is trying to get below 1000 then they are either really short or got something funny in the head.

So you plan on losing all this fat, then going right back to eating garbage? That will just cause you to gain it back. That is one of the reasons diets fail so much.

Is that right... I alway feel lethargic and sleepy after I eat more.. I guess I'm the exception not the rule.

I meant more like while doing activities. I know I feel like crap if I do not get enough to eat and I decide to go for a run or something.

I must say...that EA Active is quite the program. The only big downside is that the little stretch resistance thingy is way too weak.

agreed, I'm going to buy a stronger band.

Also, the sensors were a little wonky when I was doing bicep curls and lunges. But it sensed just fine for lunges and the rowing.
Overall, I'm impressed so far.

Woah!! Pharmacists and residents with Wii?!?!!? Since when??!! 😛

Hell, I've got a Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360....and I'll be one of those psychos in line 6 hours before midnight to get the next system when it comes out.

ahh, so a hardcore gamer i presume? was that back in pharma school?

at least you're not a geek and pc enthusiast like other peeps...😳

I agree with you.

- healthy instead of junk food

- cut out the yo-yoing and just make the necessary changes

- 1,000 calorie diets are considered starvation diets

I just got back from a run- and Man! - I'm glad I ate breakfast this morning! 😀 (Even if it was only 300 calories. 😉)

omg my ass hurts today.

day #2 of the workout involved about 4000000000 lunges and a bunch of high knee stuff. ouch.

Meh. I feel fine. I think I'm going to try the hardest difficulty.

I dig the little boxing thing. I just wish there was an opponent and it was about 30 times faster paced...like Mocap Boxing.

I actually own zero games for the thing right now. Resistance was ok...MGS4 was terrible...Bioshock is a great game...I own it on 360...I refer to it as my fancy blu ray player right now.

The one thing that I did not like about MGS4 was the load times before each section. I will admit Bioshock was pretty damn quality. I mainly use my PS3 to stream movies/tv shows from my computer onto my TV to be honest.

I disliked the fact that they spend 60% of my time with the thing droning on and on with 30 minute cutscenes for the idiotic plotline that anyone with an IQ over 80 gets tired of within 5 seconds. It might be the most pretentious video game ever made. It puts so much stock in the quality of the story that it invests the majority of the game in it...but nobody took the time to realize that the story is terrible...like along the lines of the 50s Sci-Fi movies they used to make fun of on MST3K...

MGS2 is still the best game. That Raiden chap was the only remotely interesting character in the entire series...and apparently, the fans of the series hate him...why, I have no idea...oh...wait...they are fans of the series...duh.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact Kojima is so damn full of himself and thinks that whatever pops into his brain is brilliant. At times it is like I am watching a movie instead of playing a game. I still enjoy the first one on the PS the most. Mantis was the ****.

Most fanboys hate change and the fact that Raiden might be cooler than Snake was something most could not handle.

Oh man, MST3K. *Starts downloading MST3K torrent*

Yup.

Well, a 30 year old female 5'4" and 130lb with a sedentary job with very little exercise will probably require a daily caloric intake of 1,500 to 1,600 calories. A realistic weight loss of 2 to 3 lbs per month will require this person to cut back around 300 calories a day... about 10,000 calories per month. This person can probably go extreme and reduce daily intake of 500 calories without going into starvation..so around 1,000 to 1,100 calories.

So you plan on losing all this fat, then going right back to eating garbage? That will just cause you to gain it back. That is one of the reasons diets fail so much.

No, absolutely not. In order to maintain the weight, this person once gets out of the diet, will require an increase of daily intake of calories back up to 1,500 calories per day to maintain the weight. The problem with diet failure is because these people go back to the "old" ways.. that got them obese. Same applies to exercise.. people work out a bit to lose some weight, mostly water, then stop working out..not any different than the diet.

I meant more like while doing activities. I know I feel like crap if I do not get enough to eat and I decide to go for a run or something.

Well, here's the paradox. I believe one of the keys in logevity in lifespan is small diet. I also believe large meals wear you out while your body tries to digest and store the energy derived from food. Yet, when I go into ketosis due to low carb, high protein, and working out, I actually feel a lot better with virtually no appetite. I'd think this is one of the reasons why Atkins diet can be successful. Yet that's not the diet I want to be in for a long period of time.

BTW, I'm not obese at all nor am I trying to lose weight.

Yea, I have noticed that eating smaller meals more times a day usually results in me having more energy and not feeling run down. Controlling the amount of carbs you intake is important for weight loss. I have found that for diets "Carb cycling" is the best. You eat around 120g of carbs for 3 days then you eat maybe double that on the fourth. Rinse and repeat.

Personally, I think a person should just exercise more instead of cutting their calories down to such a low level.

I sorta assumed you were 500lbs and currently eating an entire chicken. My bad.

I subscribe to WC Douglass MD's Newletter. Not because I'm a desciple, I think he's funny as chit. Here's the newletter I got last night. This dude is pretty controversial. Read more here. http://www.douglassreport.com/dailydose/dd200905/dd20090520a.html

Dear Friend,
When it comes to useless studies, this one takes the cake. According to researchers at the Collaborating Center for Obesity Prevention of the World Health Organization (WHO), the climbing rate of obesity in industrialized nations is the result of -- drum roll, please – overeating.
That's right: researchers from the WHO spent valuable funds -- funds that could have been allocated to the study of continent-wide health crises such as the AIDS epidemic in Africa -- to determine that people are fat because they're eating too much.
You just can't make this stuff up. And if you did, not a soul would believe you.
A WHO study in 2005 claimed that 1.6 billion adults on this earth are overweight -- nearly a third of the global population. Of these, about 400 million are obese. And this was almost five years and countless billions of Twinkies ago.
The British government is hoping to address the problem much as it has been addressed here in the States: by using a system of labels to warn consumers off of high-calorie, unhealthy foods. I say good luck to them.
All the labels in the world aren't going to stop anyone from overeating if that's what they want to do. No one who pulls through the drive thru at the Golden Arches actually believes that a Big Mac and fries are good for him. You don't need a label to tell you that stuff isn't good for you.
This is one trend that research teams like those at the WHO have never accounted for. In spite of all the warnings, the obesity epidemic continually gets worse.
But here's the kicker: the researchers also found that lack of exercise has nothing to do with the rising obesity epidemic. So regardless of what those pricey gym memberships and personal trainers tell you, putting yourself on a hamster wheel every day is not the answer.
Let's not make this any more complicated than it needs to be. If you want to lose weight, eat less. End of story.

No way. I will get fat if I eat too much!!
*Puts down stick of bacon wrapped butter*

I do personally do not take much stock in any obesity stats because a majority of them go off of BMI which is dumb. I am not saying there is not an obesity problem, but the stats they often quote are inflated.

I never understood obesity. Where are the families and friends of these people? I know that if any of my family was like the chick in that video, I would punch them in the face and explain how I do not want them to die in the next 5 years.

Exercise not likely to boost your metabolism :meanie: :meanie:

Health benefits of exercise require no additional support. We know it's good to exercise. But losing weight through exercise has been over estimated.. so the study says. :meanie:

Gotta love that dude's expression!

"It's that it's harder to lose weight with exercise than diet." That's not surprising when you consider that it might take an hour to burn 400 calories but just five minutes to consume them.
Essentially, weight loss comes down to math, experts say, and the number of calories in versus calories out. To lose a pound of fat, you need to create a deficit of about 3,500 calories. That can be done with both diet and exercise. To lose a pound a week, for instance, you could reduce your food intake by 500 calories a day or burn an additional 500 calories each day through exercise — or do some combination of diet and exercise that knocks off 500 calories.

I've been running+walking twice a day routinely for about 2 weeks. It's helping with stress, and my skin looks pretty good, too.

I can run about a mile straight without stopping, but the path that I take is a two mile loop, so I'll have to work up to be able to run the whole thing.

the best time would be around 7am along the coastline....might try that.
