I am applying to to Mississippi State, which even they admit does not have an exotic program. But in the fourth year you are aloud to take classes in your interest at other CVM's in the country.

Which school(s) do you think have the best exotic/Zoo/Wildlife program?

For residency??

Davis-exotics

I don't know much about tufts but I heard something

No, it is not a residency. It is an externship program, where Mississippi State students can take courses offered at other vet schools that Mississippi State doesn't offer. It is away to broaden there available courses.

I am not trying to be unhelpful, but if you want to know that information the best course of action would be to look when you are in vet school through your adviser that has the amounts of paperwork listings of the schools that do these or call the vet school you think are interested in and ask about what schools will have programs that allow you to take exotic/zoo/wildlife classes somewhere else. Then after that question ask about the strengths of the programs if they know of other schools offering the classes and if they do not, call them one by one once they give you the listings and make your choice later.

I would think who ever has a strong residency in something, would make you think they are strong classes. You just need to know where you can do them, because I don't know who and what is connected to who.

This is what I would do.

University of Illinois and Kansas State also have a lot of exotic work. I'm currently hoping I get into U of I just because they do A TON with wildlife and zoos which is what I like the most. K-State has one of the leading doctors on exotics, Dr. Carpenter, who has written pretty much every textbook on pocket pet exotics working there. Both are pretty good schools.

Wisconsin does have one of the zoo/wildlife residency programs. As far as the actual vet school curriculum goes, we don't get a lot inside of class, but there are definitely opportunities if you pursue them on your own. Third year, we have a special species class, which is all you're going to get in the classroom, but there are plenty of opportunities to learn more through club activities and lunchtime talks. For fourth year, we have a special species rotation in the building, and lots of externship time if you take the "Other" track, during which you can go do externships at zoos, wildlife places, exotics clinics and whatever else you can find. You have to go after these opportunities and arrange externships on your own though - they won't arrange it for you.
