Hi all.. I got the EK verbal book yesterday and read through the strategy. Is it saying just go back to basics or what?! What is soo different about the strategy. It seems to me that it is saying "Don't do anything Kaplan taught you!!" So am I getting this right...Take a 5 second break b/w passages...Don't skip passages, do them as they come..Simplify the answers...The question stems give you a good idea of what the topic is...Can anybody explain the strategy in their own words?!! Thanks

Hi there!

I have read the EK Verbal startegy. I did find it useful. This is how I interpreted it. Understand what they are saying and apply them in every passage you do - even if it takes longer to complete the passages initially, as you apply their concepts, you'll see that they do make sense. Once you start trusting their method, with practice you'll pick up speed.

Approach with interest in the passage and read with confidence
Summarize each paragraph
Get the main idea
Picture the author, what's his beef? - Do it with confidence
Look for trap answers
Phrase the questions in your own words
Take a breather b/n passages

I consiously apply these principles, I've seen my score improve, I still need more practice. Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Girl basically, read the passage, dont pay attention to to much detail, kinda like the way a friend will tell u a story and u know the gist of it, but not in detail, but enough to pass it on :p I mean you're still focused, dont think about anything but the passage you are reading, and that passage alone.

then when u get done, take 20sec, and think ok now what on earth was this all about, like why was the author saying this, who is the author, why would he/she say it like that, this is all the main idea. Then you proceed to answer the questions, all the while keeping that main idea in your head. Basically if answer choice is in anyway different from what main idea says then its more than likely wrong.

Then take 5secs to clear your head of that passage, move to the next one. Dont be thinkin about the previous passage as ur doin this new one. 4get about old one completely.

Basically by the end of it, you should be worn out! at least mentally. It works, and is best strategy out there. Verbal was always my high point, but with EK my score went up.

Also, EK suggests going back to old passages, writing out two-sentence summaries, and using what you wrote to answer the questions again. I did this ... it was a pain in the butt, but it helped tremendously.
