Explain me about the med school please?

Hi, I am a University of Texas undergrad student, sophomore.
My cgpa is 3.58, sgpa 3.97, m(math)gpa 3.84
I was shooting for pharm school, but then I changed my mind to become a doctor. but I really do NOT know ANYTHING about med school.

Can anyone explain me:

: difference b/t MD?? and DO??
:gpa to become a competitive applicant?
:what MCAT is about? (i.e. PCAT covers up to OCHEM 2)
:is there pre-requisite?
:What do I have to do right now? (in transition b/t sophomore/junior)
: do I need undergrad degree to go to med school? (I know it sounds silly, but im really confused about this cuz pharm school do not require any degree)
: do they pull the gpa from CC (courses that I took during summer, without it, my cGPA is 3.74..)

:gpa to become a competitive applicant? Average matriculant has about a 3.7 cGPA, slightly lower sGPA
:what MCAT is about? (i.e. PCAT covers up to OCHEM 2) I think the MCAT also covers up through ochem 2, its generally a good idea to wait to take it until you've done all the pre-reqs
:is there pre-requisite? Pre-requisites there is! google them
:What do I have to do right now? (in transition b/t sophomore/junior) Start getting clinical experience, and community service, and leadership, also take what ever pre-reqs you have left

The good news is: You're GPA is right on track, assuming you're academic performance stays at this level, you have a good chance of getting in. However, you might be looking at taking a year off to boost you're ECs and take the MCAT. Don't rush you're app, wait until you have a really solid application, then apply.

Most medical schools in the US would accept practically any bachelor's degree as a premed as long as you also have earned a few academic units of the required subjects for med school. So a BS in Computer Engineering with a few physical science subjects such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry and physics, would actually suffice. However, and take note on this carefully, all medical schools in the US are extremely hard to get into, even the least prestigious ones as medicine in the US is oversubscribed. The average admit rate at top medical schools are usually in 1% to 4% ranges. Very, very dew medical schools in the US have an admit rate of 10% or higher. I have not even heard of one that has such high admit rate data.

Computer engineering is a pretty tough program. The chances of you not going to obtain a very high GPA is very, very big, as I have not heard of anyone who graduated as summa *** laude or magna *** laude with a degree in computer engineering, and like I said, it is near to impossible to get admitted to a medical school in the US if you are not summa *** laude graduate from a foreign university, let alone a magna *** laude graduate.

I therefore suggest that you major in anything you positively think you can ace it. Maybe BS psychology or something. You really need to be magna or summa to get into a med school int the US. Otherwise, don't even bother to apply as you're only going to waste you time and money. Good luck!

I contest this. I know several people who have graduated cum laude and been accepted, and a few others who have graduated without honors and been accepted. General forum experience will say the same... 🙂

Trying to understand this post. First of all, most schools will require at least a semester of organic chemistry as well as the ones mentioned. Second of all, you absolutely do not need to be summa or magna cum laude to get into medical school. Plenty of people, myself included (i was boring and just got the cum laude), will get into without the highest honors, or any honors at all for that matter. Maybe for the top schools you need it, but not for the average medical school. Third of all, major in what you enjoy. If you don't enjoy your major, you more than likely won't end up doing well anyways.

why so much hatin on the psych? actually, this forum hates a lot on psych in general, for reasons i can't fathom.

and yes, the remarks concerning latin honors are very silly. I made the equivalent of "dean's list" a couple times but my diploma was entirely undistinguished.

Hard science majors feel about psych the same way psych majors feel about social work and elementary education majors. I think you can fathom why a psych major would consider their program more rigorous than the social work crowd's.

I've been in the "Hating on psych" crowd in real life before, and I didn't like it. I'm normally not a judgmental kind of person, but I've fallen into that trap. Part of it has to do with the fact that at my school, psych is a pretty easy major, yet a lot of the people who do it go on at length about how difficult it is (because they want to brag).

Anyway, it's a pretty legitimate major. It's really just the attitudes of a couple of people I've known in it that I don't like (which I shouldn't transfer to other people), and my guess would be that a lot of people around here have similar stories.
