Hey guys,

Just got my Step 2 CK, and like my step 1, it's a little below average (still within 1 SD). Was wondering if anyone had any pleasant ways to talk/explain it during the interview process. Should I talk about it in my personal statement? The scores aren't so underwhelming that I won't get interviews, but they are low enough that I'd want to feel comfortable with an answer prepared if someone asked. Thanks!

Below national average or below average for your desired specialty? It makes a difference?

Don't bother mentioning it in your personal statement, and whatever you do don't make excuses if you're asked. Even if it's not indicative of your true capabilities, after two scores around the same range nobody is going to buy any excuse you give them and this will only affect you negatively.

The best thing you can do is just own it. Seriously, just acknowledge that you're an average test taker but very committed to your craft and anybody that has seen you work can attest to your clinical ability and work ethic (hopefully your LORs reiterate this).

Both, unfortunately.

I agree. I don't intend on giving anyone or myself any excuses. I am an average test-taker and really have no one/thing to blame but myself for these below average scores. I studied really hard, but I suppose I didn't study hard enough or did not study correctly, but that is on me. I'm just looking for ways to say that in a more desirable light.

Half of people are a little or more below the average. If you get an interview don't intentionally draw too much attention to it. Look at the "charting outcomes" for your desired specialty. You might be surprised how
Many are in your bracket

Just a quick side note, one of the hardest things for me to come to grips with was being average in med school. You are literally in a class of people that have been at the top of everything they've done, academically, for their entire lives. So, scoring at (or slightly below) the average just means you belong here -- despite it being a little ego deflating at first.
